Title: So your'e locked in... POLL
Post by: Fuzzy on March 28, 2005, 06:14:50 AM
During a horrific accident, you sustain a severe head injury, and suffer from "Locked In Syndrome". don't know what locked in syndrome is? click here (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/lockedinsyndrome/lockedinsyndrome.htm)
This is basically an injury which allows normal cognitive function with complete physical dissociation.

Being in this state would you, answer honestly, choose to have your life end in a dignified compassionate manner or sustain life through any means possible?

I would want to be put out in the most excruciatingly slow, most gruesome, painful way possible on live pay-per-view TV.

But then again I am a greedy masochistic exhibitionist.

With todays advances in medicine I would be kept alive by any means possible. I just figure if I can live like that for 20-30 years by then they may have found out how to save me.

I'll live like that.  When God wants me, he can have me.

I would want to be left to die. I would not want to live that way, and my family deserves to get on withe their lives. To be kept alive is just a selfish move and you do it at the expense of everyone around you.

Depends on the cause and the total prognosis.

This stuff is theoretical to a lot of you but pretty close to home for my family.  My wife suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and there is always a chance that something like this could happen to her.

Her wishes have been pretty much to keep her alive unless there is absolutely no hope in the near future of some kind of pallation of the problem.  Note I didn't say cure.  With the modern research done today (ie stem cell) who knows what may come down the line in just a few years.

Personally, no, I wouldn't want to be kept alive but at the same time starving me to death is a particularly cruel way for someone to go too.  I couldn't just starve my wife to death, especially if she has cognitive function.  To let an oriented person starve to death has to be exceptionally cruel in my book and I couldn't do it.
