Title: Why do I need a Google Mail account?
Post by: Toad on March 30, 2005, 08:14:03 AM
The younger generation of the family seems to think I need a G-mail account.

Any real benefit to this? What does Google do better?

Thanks!

Great interface, and 1 gig of storage. Plus, from what I've seen there's no automatic footer at the bottom of emails like with hotmail, i.e.

---------
MSN Hotmail blah blah
Try us free, set up your own account, go to hotmail.com!

Watch it Toad, they'll make a nerd aouta ya! :D

I use it as a "blanket" for spam (Whenever I register on a site that I found suspicious or I know I need to sign in to get in only once).

Gmail, has an ok spam filter, and lots of storage.

The funny thing is, Toad, that Tomato has been onto me to start using the Gmail account she set up for me. At that time, Gmail did not allow for POP3 access, and so it was a non-starter.

Yahoo! mail does everything I want it to do for me. It allows me 250MB storage free (you can have more if you're prepared to pay) and I can access via the website on any computer, or download my mail into Outlook using the POP3 mail server. Yahoo! mail did go through a bad patch a few months ago (servers down etc.) but has been OK recently.

My feeling about Gmail is that it's a tail wagging dog product. A solution looking for a problem to solve. It's probably worth keeping in mind for the future, but for me for now, the benefits of Gmail  are outweighed by the hassle of having to change my email addresses. It's on my list, but it's way down that list.

If you want to try something new, get Netscape 7.2 to replace IExplorer. I like Netscape MUCH more these days. A quality product with the added benefit of being immune to many computer viruses which exploit security weaknesses in IE.

wasnt there a controversy regarding g-mail and its tracking of the content of your mail for marketing purposes?

i just use it to sign up for stuff that im only going to use once or twice, or stuff that send out the occasional important email that i really dont like the idea of accidently missing in the hotmail, and i dont need to reply to quickly.

also good for the occasional file sending.

Why would anyone need 1 gig of space for a junk mail account? More spam?

You can use it to store pictures or AH guncam footage. Its not any better than other online storage solutions but it IS free.
