Title: HT another Ack question
Post by: whels on March 30, 2005, 04:33:10 PM
Ack emplacements are sandbagged positions with all metal guns
and flesh n bone operators. in AH 1 20mm  or 30mm round hitting the fround just near it will kill it from the explosive content of the round.  if its so easy for 20/30mm round to kill a sandbagged steel gun, why is it near impossible for the same round to kill a troop running to map room in same way?  after all the troop is unarmored and more delecate then a all metal gun.

seems  it should be other way around.  Troops should die with hit near them and the gun emplacement should need a direct hit.

Good point.

Strafing troops on ground is very difficult. Incredibly hard to actually land a bullet on a such a small target.

Some may say that it is a gameplay concession, to increase the survivability of the troops.. but I think it doesn't make sense. If the troops are under fire, then the goon drop wasn't properly protected.

Well having all your troops run to one easily identified target
in the open while neither jinking or taking cover when attacked
isn't all that realistic either.

     Well, unless you're Napoleon ;)

If ground troops are unprotected and left open to fire from the air, then by all means they should die Rino.

It means a realllly lousy vulch/CAP job.

20mm and 30mm in AH are acting like grenades when hitting the ground.  Try landing with your gear up and when you stand still on the runway, fire a few 20s.  If they hit the ground in front of your wings, you will die most of the ttimes :lol .  If you do this in a 110 and fire a single 30mm into the grownd, instand death.

Shoot someone in the leg and reduce it's running capabilities (we now have run and walk mode for bail-outs)

I thought most WW2 era planes with 20-30mm cannons had different types of ammo in one belt.

Example:1st round tracer, 2nd round HE, 3rd round ball, 4th round AP, repeat as needed.

I know at least the British did that with their 20mm cannons, and yes, I know, that's not the exact loadout the belts had, but it's just an example.

I never said they shouldn't die, I just said their method of
attack is more like lemmings than commandos.

So? A spit will do the same.  I still don;t see why you would die.  You normally could put a lot of German rounds into a plane and it just flies away.  Shooting at the grownd in front of the wings kills you.  In anycase, not important.  i just thought it was funny.

It causes a self-kill shooter.

You shot a friendly(yourself), which you are not allowed to do, so, you are punished for it two-fold.

 That's my theory anyway :D

the solution is simple:

make troops die when they take ANY kind of damage. Explosion, bullet hit, HE ammo round, they get run over, etc.

Make the map room require 50 troops to capture.

Make each troop-carrying unit in the game deploy 50 troops.

Thus we can have invasions of the lemming-people spewing or paratrooping out of goonies/LVT/M3's and we can shoot at them or bomb them to our pleasure.

Add squishy-screaming sounds to troops as they get smacked.

The reason why acks are so easy to kill with cannon is quite simple.  Each emplacement is surrounded with 50 gallon gasoline drums.
