May she find eternal peace.
-
Yep, have to say I am glad that her body has passed on. Sad story all the way around.
As for the soul, I often wonder where it goes in a person who is a vegetable. Is it locked inside, or does it leave, knowing the end is at hand?
-
May she rest in peace.
edit: you're right Airhead....
-
Thud, no point in starting that debate again, all's been covered in the five other threads about it.
-
God Bless her.

This just proves how morally bankrupt this country has become. There is no hope for us as a country. Every empire falls and we are well on our way..and only after little more than 200 years..sad.
RIP Terri

she is fine now,
may those she leaves behind now find peace in her passing

You choose this to find us morally bankrupt. LOLH. If her accident happened 100 years ago she would not have stayed alive as long as she has.
I think it was cruel not to let her die and to keep her struggling on imprisoned in a jail cell of flesh.
If I were in her condition trapped in a body I could not use, let alone one I could not even feed myself in, I would much rather die. The fact that they left that poor woman starve to death is what is most repugnant and cruel. All because we are too PC to help her into the next world more graciously.
Kevorkian and others should be allowed to help those suffering and in pain that want to move on, to move on. What right does the government have to tell me when I can or can not die and how I want to go about it.
As for Terry, I hope she finally rests in peace now that she is free.may those she leaves behind now find peace in her passing
Ahmen!

"By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken;
for dust you are and to dust you will return."
Eternal peace to Terri; I'm sure she will have it.
Some sort of peace to those that survive her and continue to argue over here.
-
RIP ...geez, he threw the parents out in her final moments.
:(
-
She is free of her pain and condition now. RIP
-
Glad this horrible situation is over. I was sick with the media, the protestors, her parents, her husband were all driving me nuts.
Terri probably wanted to die, laying there without being able to do anything.
I hope the autopsy reveals that there was no real hope of her being 'revived' to normal so that everyone in this whole **** world will realize that keeping someone alive like that is torture for them and just convienent for wacked out parents and hippie protestors.*
*protestors who got so rowdy, that the local school was closed for a week for fear of the childrens safety from the protestors.

wow...good question! I'm guessing it stays locked in till the body dies...

It's easy for me to think that the parents were selfish and thinking only of themselves...but who can blame them, they did all they could to keep their child alive.
I pray I'm never in that situation as a parent....

An interesting idea I read elsewhere was that it would have benefitted society if Jeb Bush had called in the Florida Guard and ordered a Guard doctor to hook her back up. Sure, it would have sparked a constitutional crisis, but IMHO this sort of thing is the kind of problem that NEEDS to be forced. What happens next time?
It's been pointed out that doing to a dog what was done to Shiavo would result in jail time, so what exactly would the courts have tried to do to the governor if he'd ordered the state police, with Florida Guard/Militia protection, to hook her back up? What if the Governor had directed the state police to take custody of Shiavo for her own protection, making her a ward of the state? If a state child protection agency can take children from their home due to abuse, can't a government agency take an incompetent person into protective custody?
It's too bad the governor and president weren't willing to fight this battle, because it sets the precedent that the next of kin's wishes are in general to be held higher than the preservation of life, and that in a custody dispute where one party wishes the ward to live and the other wishes the ward to die, again the decision goes to the legal custodian, not in favor of the preservation of life. Setting the letter of the law, which we wrote without intending these consequences, above simple preservation of life, is an extremely dangerous precedent.

Then the people need to change the law. By the people, for the people... right?

Probably because they would have made up some crap about her screaming bloody murder as she died and that she was in horrible, horrible pain.

A dog would have been euthanized long before a PVS and feeding tube was at issue.
I hope that the parties to this family tragedy can somehow put this behind them now.
-
Without wriiten proof of her wishes..because the so called conversations with her on the subject are just hearsay..No Husband, Family member, court, Government, or President has the right to order your death if you are not guilty of a crime...there is no "right to die"...I know I'll get flak for it..but there is only one person/enitity that can decide that. Maybe she wanted to die...maybe she is better off..we will never know but alot of people beleive that it's not your choice to decide how/when you go. Luckily for her soul she was executed by the government, so in the eyes of that entity she didn't commit suicide.
-
Wow. Even after her death and even after I've been over it no less then 5 times, you idiots still think she was a vegetable.

We'll see what the autopsy has to say about that.

They tried exactly that. The local cops faced down the state cops and told them not to come back without a judge.

Her basic primal functions worked, there was no higher functions at play. For all intents and purposes, she was a vegetable.

Could you imagine if she was concious the whole 15 years, but just couldn't make anyone aware that she was. What kind of torture would that be. She should have been taken off life support after 1-2 years at the most.
:(
-
I believe it was quite a chore to get her off life support. Once your on, your on for life. That's the story the hospital gave us when my father was possibly going to be put on life support.
The whole story all revolved around money. Such a shame the lady could not have died with some dignity.

Malta
p.s. Unfortunately, I am becoming more and more disappointed with President Bush and the Republican party. If only the Democrats would stop being the "Liberal- baby killing, gun grabbing, queer marrying" party I believe we could get more balance in the US. There was a time when the Democratic party was focused on representing the working class. What working class person can afford to be liberal?
-
Indeed may she now find some peace.
RIP.
PS Airhead.
You showed some class with this post sir
But be afraid very afraid LOL I am starting to like you.

No, a person described as a vegetable just lies there like a vegetable would. They are alive but have NO brain functions.
Terry had brain functions, but no higher brain functions due to brain damage. She was anything but a vegetable.
But keep justifying her murder if it makes you sleep better at night.
-
Keep spouting your fake morality. You can't see the forrest for the trees and simply regurgitate whats spoon fed to you.
Brain functions akin to that of a venus fly trap are anything but human life.

-
Higher brain functions?
So that means she has less brain functions then an animal? closer to a plant.........
It was her time time, They just would not let her go.
-
She had the brain functions of a retard. Should we start killing them off as well?
-
If she had brain functions of a retard then she would be able to feed herself, and or be able to communicate some how, she could do neither.
She was a vegetable.
-
No, just like anyother person or animal, she has to be taught to do things.
Doctors have said that she could have easily have learned these things. Michael just didn't allow it. For 13 years her Husband didn't allow her to learn how to eat.

Which doctors? I would really like to know the name of the doctors that said she could learn to these things with little more than a brainstem.

Her mental capacity was below that of a mentally handicapped person, she was bed ridden, could not eat or drink, and was a shell of her former person. As a matter of a fact, there was no her. Just her body.
But this is getting stupid, this thread is about her finally getting out of limbo.
You can call me a murderer for saying she needed to go, but you'll still be the ******* for wanting to keep her in that state.

-
sorry, double post.
-
I'm glad they let her go, but sailer brought up an interesting point about killing disabled people when he said that she had the brain functions of a "retard" and Trell answered that if she was a retard she would be able to feed herself. This is untrue. There are many disabled people whom without someone to feed them, would die. Where do you draw the line? Tough call, but from what I know about this case (I'm certainly no expert), the right call was made. I'm sure she is better off now.
-
You hope Terri is fine? Of course she is fine. She's with the One who created the Sun, the Earth , the universe. But are we fine?
It was more about us than her. Just 50 years ago, medical breakthroughs that would keep people alive were considered gifts from God. Now we're arrogant enough to pick and choose when we want to use them.
Terri is fine. We aren't.
Why doesn't God give us more gifts? I guess because after time we return them.

Yep, if she indeed was concius this should have been done a long time ago. If she was a total veggie, then keeping her articificially alive was just a tremendous waste of medical resources.
You really should do something about your legal system if a case like this takes 7 years to solve.

From: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/coma/coma.htm (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/coma/coma.htm)
What is Coma and Persistent Vegetative State?
A coma is a profound or deep state of unconsciousness. An individual in a state of coma is alive but unable to move or respond to his or her environment. Coma may occur as a complication of an underlying illness, or as a result of injuries, such as head trauma. A persistent vegetative state (commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as "brain-death") sometimes follows a coma. Individuals in such a state have lost their thinking abilities and awareness of their surroundings, but retain non-cognitive function and normal sleep patterns. Even though those in a persistent vegetative state lose their higher brain functions, other key functions such as breathing and circulation remain relatively intact. Spontaneous movements may occur, and the eyes may open in response to external stimuli. They may even occasionally grimace, cry, or laugh. Although individuals in a persistent vegetative state may appear somewhat normal, they do not speak and they are unable to respond to commands.
It sounds as if she fit exactly into what PVS is defined as.
