Title: AH2 freezes (router?)
Post by: Tush on April 01, 2005, 05:39:33 AM
hi all
been playing AH for long time and never had any problems....
i've just put up a network in my home using a router.. and now after a few minutes of play in AH2 it just freezes! i read on the trouble shooting on the HTC page that its probebly the Routers Firewall.. well i checked it! went into my browser punched in the IP address for my router and went into the setup... firewall was disabled and no other firewall is working on both computers that are on the network and still AH2 is freezing!

anyone know if i did anything wrong? really new to network enviourment.... usualy i connected straight to the ADSL modem from my comp but now i connect to the router and the router connects to the ADSL modem.. same with the other computer.

plz need this solved ASAP so i can continue kicking ur tulips in AH 8D

Have you run a route trace to HTC's server?  You could have a fine network at home, but your connection to the other end of the line is only as good as the connection in between.

P.S.:  I dont know what type of router you have, or where you saw that you should disable the hardware firewall.  I disable my software firewall and my A/V to play Aces High, but I'd never dream of disabling my router firewall.

well then what else can be making this CTDs and AH freezes???
thing i've noticed is that sometimes after freezes it comes back after about 20 secs... with conx still active.. might mean that the connection is fine but i dont see what else can be the problem.

edit:
ok this is the trace route...

You can download Ping Plotter.  Or you can use the tracert command in a DOS window.

Bring up your DOS window and at the command prompt type tracert "IP" where IP is the IP address you want route traced to.

Right click in the window and select "Mark".  Drag the "white" area to cover the entire route trace.  Right click on the bar at the top of the DOS window and select Edit -> Copy and it will copy everything that is highlighted.  Then paste it here.

Here's a copy of mine to show you what it looks like.  I'm hiding behind my router right now, so the first hop is a timeout.

Hop 12 your request timed out.  That means (more than likely) lost packets, BIG slowdown in your connection to the arena, and a darn good point to start looking for your problem.  You know you have a problem on your route now, download the ping plotter program and get a picture of how bad your packet loss is.  Send it to your ISP and have them complain to the offending party.  Doesnt always work, but it cant hurt.

Plus you might want to notice the large increase in time after that bad hop, going from double digit response times to times in the 200-300ms range.

well im from israel so the bad hop is regular i guess cuz of distance....
but dont know about the 12 spot... ping plotter shows timeout also.
does this mean that it isnt the router NAT firewall???

I am sure the game does not freeze when you loose conection or have packet loss. In that case you fly on like always and the other planes warp or disapear.
Did you relocate your computer when installing the router? My guess is that it gets to hot now or has another hardware problem. Maybe the power plug to the graphic card went out or something didnt take the movement to good.

I had comps run fine for years and once they are moved 5 inches they refuse to  work. Can you run other directx9c stuff without problem? Maybe you plugged your monitor into the onboard video instead of the graphics card? Dont laugh, i had a friend of mine moving his comp and complaining about the black screen while he plugged into the onboard video that was disabled.

Also it might be you have a faulty file on the ah2 instalation? Not sure if that will cause freezes, but it might. Or you have the SilentHunter 3 DVD in the comp or any other CD that uses a copy protection like starforce. My comp freezes every now and then to check the copy protection when SH3 is in the drive.

im not completly sure about what u said Schutt cuz the router might be putting up the firewall and suspending AH2 untill it has been blocked.

i didnt relocate my computer all i did was change the Network cable from going to the ADSL to the router.

StarOfAfrica2 do u think that this timeout in hop 12 would get my AH2 frozen? i dont really think its the problem.

Probably not, since you had connection after that, but it can cause freezes.  More likely, you would lose your connection to the game and it would quit.

You should rule out any spyware or adware on your computer that might be eating up your bandwidth and CPU resources.  If you find nothing, try removing the router from the setup and put it back the way you had it before.  If it solves the problem, you probably bought a bad router and you can take it back.  If it doesnt solve the problem, at least you can rule out your router.  Just to check, this doesnt hook into your computer via a USB plug does it?

Barring any problems being found so far, its possible something else happened at the same time and its only mere coincidence that it is timed with your adding the router.  Run a Direct X diagnostic report and send it to Skuzzy, maybe he can find something in your drivers or hardware that could be causing it.  Also, try to remember if there were ANY other changes you made, no matter how inconsequential it may seem.  Sometimes the smallest changes can have very large problems associated with them.

I'm sorry I cant narrow it down more for you, but after this you should at least be able to rule out what it isnt.  That is a help all by itself.  Good luck!
