I'm about to start making a Tamiya 1/48 Fw-190D-9 with Verlinden engine/cannon set.
1st question:
I've heard of oil-painting or something to get shades like the pictures below.
How do I do that, what do I use?
2nd question:
What do I use for cutting out parts of the kit? I've experienced a knive was too...crude for the delicate job.

1. washes... and/or drybrushing.

2. use some wire cutter-type thing... snip carefully then sand down any little nub remaining.

third on top right side, blunt nosed clippers work great, as well as some regualr, first top left.
2a. unless you meant opening up panels and stuff? small, thin razor saw. but whatever you use, it's all about taking your time and being careful.

or a jeweler's saw..

Frank, I'm nowhere near the guru that some of these guys are on building models, but one trick I use for cutting out those little parts is to take a Xacto knife and heat the blade with a lighter, then just touch the edge to the connectors. Goes right thru with just a little pressure.
