Title: google map your local military base
Post by: radshak on April 06, 2005, 09:19:29 AM
Hey all, google has now integrated their newly acquired keyhole satelite mapping technology to their map site. I thought it might be cool to share some overheads of military instalations.

1. Goto http://maps.google.com
2. Click the satelite link in the upper right
3. Find you local military base/port/airfield
4. Click link to this page in upper right to get a link to the lat/lon
5. Post it here!

Here are my locals, philadelphia naval yard

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=philadelphia+port&ll=39.888890,-75.183048&spn=0.010836,0.015407&t=k&hl=en

Willow Grove naval air station

Let's see what near you!

Does not seem to work from Canada.

Would be cool feature to be able to look at an airport that I was going to fly to. I am heading down to Sun and Fun next week and was trying to look at Lakeland to see the runway layout. Too bad it was not working.

Started working all of a sudden for me.

Very cool. I found my plane at the local airport tied down on the apron.

Also I have a pretty good shot of my house. I can tell that the picture is at least 2 years old as it is a summer shot and a new subdivision that was started last spring was still a field in the picture.

Very cool!

Normally there are 6-7 KC-135s and a ****load of C130 Hercs laying around on the tarmac.  Not sure where they were in when this was taken.

Someone told me yesterday that he felt general aviation should be prohibited at any airport that has commercial passenger carrying aircraft operating.

Now I read folks like Jackal1 suggesting this mapping is also dangerous.

This culture of fear sure has taken quite a grip around here, eh?  I remember a time when the only thing we had to fear was a fiery atomic holocaust.  Of course, back then we schooldesks that would protect us if we ducked and covered properly, but todays threats seem amorphous enough that people seem to feel the need to sand down anything with sharp edges.

Let's just skip the interim phase and go straight to child-safing our planet.  I volunteer Lasz to put corks on the tusks of Rhinos, and I'll handle filling in the Grand Canyon.

NAS Oceana, Dam Neck Annex.... formerly known as ...Fleet Combat Traing Center Atlantic, Dam Neck

I work in the large square building 2nd from the top in the row next to the beach(Gallery Hall)....I went to OS "A" School in the large square building across the street about 11 years ago(Walker Hall)..between the two is the flagstaff and 2 quad mount 40mm AA Guns from the USS Missouri.

This is also home to Special Warfare Development Group..Formerly known as SeAL Team 6(zoom out and it's a compound to the north)

To the Northeast of the base is NAS Oceana...and west is NS Norfolk.

I have a Blue and White 182 (1958). Registration is C-FKJW.

First time there for me. I am looking forward to it. I should arrive on Tues and will leave on Friday although I might arrive on Wed if the weather is not VFR on Tues.

Thanks for those links.

Nothing gathered from those photos could be of much value. It's not like they are updated all the time..so ship/troop movements and such aren'y an issue...neither is the layout..thats on any local streetmap and given out at most front gates anyway....

Usefull information is how like until last month NAS Oceana had NO perimeter fence around 90% of the base. And been that way since the base was commissioned...of course thats moot now since they just completed it.

I use one of the five day type coolers and put in about 10lbs of dry ice cover that with an old towel then beer and ice. This works for about a week (longer then the case of beer lasts) I will tell you how to get to the nearest store, it's a long walk but I usually get a ride back to the back gate. When you need more beer NO walk is to far. I take all the seats out of the plane except the pilots seat of course and this gives me more room. Beer is ava. from the food venders as well but not near the campers and it's pricey.

Showers are also nearby and nice and clean and hot. Plan on going during the daily air show as morning and evening is crowed.

The field is closed from 1:00 PM local to 5:00 pm (air show so plan you arrival accordingly or go to GIF (Winter Haven airfield) to wait it out.

Really understand the arrival procedure and have then with you as you will be close in trail and landing 3 at a time on the runway (really the taxi way). Don't use the runway unless directed to (I never have been) as that is for the big iron and the are landing at the same time.

Practice your spot landings and don’t stop on the runway for any reason.

It's a hoot and prepare to be overloaded on aviation for the week as its all about flying.

It's a great time and the weather should be great, last year the nights got a bit chilly (upper 50's) and the days should be low 80's or upper 70's.

See ya there!!

I didn`t suggest anything . My reference was pertaining to the fact that you can get your butt thrown in the pokey for attempting to take pictures of even a train yard by Homeland Security.

On the other hand I don`t beleive it is an overly brilliant thing to do. I also didn`t believe it was overly smart to broadcast troop locations and movements on CNN during the height of the war. Sometimes a little common sense will go a long ways.

Oh no!  Of course you didn't suggest it!  In fact, you're the soul of innocence.  Of course, that doesn't mean that you didn't infer it.  Inference and suggestion are different, right?

Whoops!  Guess I was mistaken again, looks pretty clear that you do, in fact, fit the intent I referred to in my original response.

Don't worry, there's great precedence to generating obviously false map data.  Why, the USSR did it as a matter of policy!

I'm reminded of the following aviation joke:
Quote
Taxiing down the tarmac, a DC-10 abruptly stopped, turned around and returned to
the gate. After an hour-long wait, it finally took off. A concerned passenger
asked the flight attendant, "What, exactly, was the problem?"

"The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine," explained the flight
attendant. "It took us a while to find a new pilot."

Indeed, if the maps show holes in our security...  we should just get rid of the maps!

These maps are pretty old. I can tell just by looking for some key indicators about Edwards AFB. Certain buildings that are here now but not in the photos. Certain areas that may or may not have had aircraft during a certain time frame.

If you want old data then these will do you just fine.:aok

Do you remember the "excavation" by the dorms? Or when the SR was shipped to the Museum? Or when the F-15s went to Shadow? Or when the new LOX yard was built? The new MPF? The education buildings by ALS?

The sod on the youth baseball field is old. The sod originally wasn't there. Then my wife and her squadron put sod down. Then later that fall they removed it because it was dying.

I'd say they're about 2 and a half years old. I got here in Jan 02. My wife got here June 02. She deployed December 02 and got back in June 03. We were just starting the process of moving to Shadow around that time frame.

If you look at Shadows ramp you'll see the heavies on what was to become our ramp. Then at the old Eagle ramp you can see all our AGE is there around the compound wall including our old storage bins between the main facility and the northern aircraft shelters. Those were moved down to Shadow. Also another interesting thing is the SR 71 is no longer located on our ramp outside the compound but at the Museum. And on that same ramp where the SR 71 use to be is where we launched the E model for the first multiple pickle of the WCMDs. You can see where our fuel would drop on the ramp. That ramp was rarely used except for during that testing.

I realize now that it's more than 2 years cause we havnt had 3 B1s since then.  I also noticed the lack of grey F16s and 15s down at shadow/eagle.

I don't know how long the Marines have been here but they seem to have BOTH of their squadrons here so it's pre invasion Iraq at least.

Side note:

Check out the break area down at south base and tell me what that resembles (it's the park in between buildings.....it has quite a "spirit")

Well they could be used as simple plans but unless you have a good amount of experience you really cant tell wich road/bldg from what I have to agree with you.

BTW did you go to the LGs party today.  I orriginally didnt want to go but $5 for free beer aint bad.

What sucks is our shop lost a #6 Apex (yea I know used in 2 of 1000 screws we actually work on) and I got recalled to explain to the pro super and mait. officer (drunk as a skunk) what we did on day shift.

Turns out an amn from last night had it in his gortex and our morning shift didnt' catch it.
