My youngest son is considering Photography as a career and I was hoping to get an idea about that career line.  If anyone is a Pro Photographer, I would be interested in hearing what he has to say about it, and advice he could pass on.

I used to be in that line...highly competetive field, so pay is not very good.  Better off to do something boring.  Make him be a CPA

We pay those guys $1,400 to $1,800 a day. Subtract their film, equipment, a stylist and assistant photographer who are basically working for nothing, and they're laughing. I mean, they drive real nice cars.

So I guess it depends.

i recieved my undergraduate in photography/video but do not do photography in a commercial sense so i have little input to offer as far as opportunities.  i do however have a few friends who are doing quite well as proffesional shooters.  they love thier work.

all that i can say is, support him and encourage him and he will find his line the same as anything else.

I have to agree with 88 here. I did semi pro work while still in High School. I did weddings and made a pretty fair amount of money for the time and my age. It was extremely nerve wracking as you knew you couldn't redo the shoot.

There are all types of jobs out there that cover the spectrum of the media. If that is really what he wants to do let him have a free choice in it. You might want to ask him to pick a more commercial minor in school that he can use as a fall back option if the camera thing doesn't work out.

Thanks for the advice.  I am hoping if this is the field he pursue it will be one he can find a job in to gain experience, and either have a good career with a commerical enterprise, or someday have his own studio.

The school he is looking at right now isn't even close to cheap, but we will put him through it if that is what he wants to pursue.

Anyone else got any good info or advice, I am open to hear it.

thanks
