Only my opinion but I reckon there are national characteristics in engineering vehicles
American Cars, bikes or planes are generaly big, crude, packed with power of a torquey nature.
Dodge Charger, Harley, P47 for example.
German vehicles are well engineered, powerfull but butt ugly.
BMW, BMW!, Me109
Japanese vehicles are light, handle beautifully pretty fast, but fragile.
Mitsubishi , Yamaha R1, Zero fighter
British vehicles look good exude a certain class but are a bit rough in places and heath robinson! ( Miss schillings orifice!? A bodge on early spits )
MG , Triumph / BSA/ Norton/ Spitfire.
Just a theory as I say. Now cue everyone pointing out the exeptions to the rule.

Actually I'm suprised you forgot Russian engineering traits. Simple, reliable, can usually be fixed with percussive maintenance.

Yeah your right!
Off to see if I can find examples. Back in a mo.

Ok will go look at thast too.
:D

That Russian Motorcycle is a URAl copied from German BMW military bikes..in the short alliance they had before Hitler stabbed em in the back.
-
P-47 is hardly crude, powerplant was more refined than just about anything in WW2.
-
And Japanese production changed completely post-war from low quality low tech copies to high-tech super quality products.
Russian tech however is right on the mark, they still use WW2 era tech there. :)

Class no.

I love the sound of a British sportscar... the old TR6 was like music. German sportscars sound like washing machines in comparison.

Fast red things that look beautiful but are unreliable with shoddy components that let the side down ?

The Mini is a british yugo/clowncar.

Live on a crowded island and the Mini makes sense! It was a design classic way ahead of its time. So good the BMW B****rds used Rover to redesign it then dumped the company and ran taking the best bit ( the new mini with them ) Grand theft auto!

Well, a 360 Modena's brakes will go out and the NSX will beat it on a circuit.. but the Lambo's hold up to whatever you can throw at them.
-
brit stuff is slightly effeminate looking and delicate with poor electrics and sealing... The Russians didn't even bother to copy it because of those traits... I could never figure why an island nation that rained 90% of the time couldn't make a convertable or roadster that wasn't the worst leaker in the world or electrics that worked in the rain.
The russians copied German an American stuff when they copied... B17's and BMW R75... the Russian tank looked like it could have come out of a german or American factory.

well skyprancer.... unlike you... my opinions are formed from experiance. How many American vehicles have you owned? I have owned a dozen or more british vehicles. Are you saying that my opinion on them is wrong? in what way?
It has been my experiance that if you own a british vehicle you are buying it for the looks... you need to gut everything mechanical or electrical and repalce it with American or jap or german parts if you are not a masochist.
I currently own an Austin Healy that has not british parts except body and interior and some front suspension and steering parts.

I drove a Chrysler for a bit. Wallowed like a boat, rotted away, the electrics packed up.! Does that count?
By the way are you going to accept the fact I have been to your great country now? Just wondering oh wise and so experienced old man of the BBS:lol

skyprancer... if you say you have been here I will believe you... this is the first time I have seen (or recall seeing) you say that you had. This is a huge country... where did you go? When I was in england I put 1200 miles on a rental car. The place is absolutely tiny and claustrophobic to me.
If a Chysler rotted away and the electrics went south then the same environment that caused it would destroy a brit car in half the time. I have owned a dozen brit cars and bikes. Many more American ones tho.

I did 3000 miles round the midwest and South dakota in 98 with my ex. Took in Sturgis for the rally and got invited to a Sioux pow wow. Was cool. Liked that bit of your country and had a right laugh.
I traveled up and down the eastern seaboard in 87 plus visited relatives in Toronto, after spending 3 months working with underprivelidged kids on a summer camp scheme for those less fortunate than the rest of us.
All good stuff.
As for the relative merits of British stuff as oppsed to US stuff both have good and bad points. I guess they are designed for different jobs. As you say this is a little Island with twisty little roads. The chrysler I had wallowed like a boat round our bends. Was a total nightmare. Utterly useless. but it was designed for a country where a corner is a novelty and the speed limit is a paltry 55 or thereabouts.

A bit like thold Chrysler I had the misfortune to own!
-
America made few decent cars from about 73 to 84. Most were junk. They are much MUCH better now.
-
You are probably right.
This looks fine fine fine.
Generaly I'm a bike fan a car is just a tin box for lugging big stuff or dogs! But I'd consider the above;) ( now where is that lottery ticket! )
-
agreed. Many new American cars are just plain smurfy, the beltlines are way too high. Especially on the new Chryslers. I'm sorry, I mean Daimler-Chryslers. How do you pronounce "Daimler-Chrysler" you ask? The "Chrysler" is silent.
-
There is a lot of truth in saying vehicles reflect national characteristics. At least that used to be the case when they were designed and built in their country of origin. There's always exceptions. The Spitfire was too beautiful to be British. The Hurricane was very British. I read somewhere that the F4 Phantom was too ugly to be American. It looked British. :D
I somehow doubt Skydancers Chrsyler was actually American. More likely it was French or something.
In any case these days everything is multinational. The new Mini is German masquerading as British. Opel is German, Vauxhall is British, Holden is Australian. But actually they are all American because they're owned by GM. National differences are beginning to fade.
-
I believe that the Mustang and viper and vette and even a few of the new 4 banger chevies are quite capable. We have a wide selection of vehicles from sports cars to trucks to luxury touring type cars. All are very dependable and built for the kind of road and weather conditions we have here. I think German cars are very much like American cars so far as that goes. There is even some inbreeding like chrysler.
American cars are a good deal so far as performance goes.

worked on my first BMW motorcycle today... it is amazing! built like a Harley in a lot of ways with a little more sophisticated engineering but.... everything hell for strong and well thought out... the thing had been in storage for over ten years and then beat to death by 4 or five 20 something kids... My son gave it to me. It ran great when I got it even tho the air filter was wasted and the oil filter came out in pieces... the points were probly original and the carbs were out of sync...
Weird... it starts a little better now and runs smoother but.... not so much that you would get all excited... it never really ran bad. it is like a tank. brit stuff was allways fussy and light and fragil.. everything was polished and fitted yet... they leaked oil and had crappy electrics. if they were the slightest bit out of tune they lost half their horsepower.
American stuff is like the german stuff... I have seen V8's with the spark plugs rusted in so bad that they wouldn't come out without breaking em.
lazs
-
Like I say depends where you live and what you want a vehicle to do. That old beemer is great if you don't want to look at it. Ugly trees grow BMWs ( particularly their motorcycles ) but they are built solid and thats why they make great overlanders.
As for Brit stuff being fussy, my Triumph seems to be built tough. All the Jap stuff I've ridden has fallen apart or got very tatty after riding through a winter or two. The newer Triumphs still look like new ten years on. My current bike is ten years old and still shines up good. And my old t100 is going great and its 45 years old. You don't see many 45 year old Jap bikes at the vintage rallys, but you do see a lot of Beemers, Harleys, Triumphs BSA's Nortons etc. All seem to last OK.
-
oh really? had a 200 triumph cub that fell apart but the electrics died long before... the trident solved the oil leak problem by butting a rumovable and cleanable sponge between the sidplate and the crankcase.. Jap electrics are ten times better than british ones... everyones is.. the jag didn't even become a dependable car until Ford bought it. shall we talk about the 441 victor or the old Nortons? the only thing that kept you from getting hurt on one was that they wouldn't start.
I have seen a lot of british tuff that looked like new when it was 30 years old... In europe... not here..it usually had more hours in care than driving tho. here it gets used and 5 years later it is due for a "restoration".
Old big Healeys were built pretty strong tho but with fussy carbs and electrics and a little girl of a transmission and throwout bearing. you couldn't even change that abortion unless you pulled the whole engine and trans. An American could kill 2 throwout bearings a year... same ones were used in jags up till the 70's. It was common to put chevy V8's in jag sedans so that you could depend on em.
The old BMW is ugly? Idon't know.. it is kinda masculine looking. it is a look od functionality. I don't see anything on it that doesn't help the function and isn't built very strong. the brit bikes look like everything else on the road. More people look at the old BMW than the neon things going by... It is easy to work on and makes sense.
lazs
-
as for seeing vintage bikes... Jap bikes were pretty much throwaways... very cheap to buy... they are gaining in value tho... friend has a Z1 kawi that has been across the country a couple of times without ever being worked on (imagine a norton or trumpet or beezer making even two states). Old indians and Harleys are worth a fortune and have you seen what they are getting for old BMW's? You can't give away old jags here unless they are VERY old and b3eingt sold to someone who will show not go.
most brit stuff is hand fitted... the guy who redid the seats on my Healey said.. "those friggin brits must have no home life... there is like 10 hours labor to cover one seat.."
Brit stuff is to look at not to use. if you want to use it then gut the driveline and electrics and put in American stuff.

I think some have short memories regarding hogs. Old pans and shovels broke down all the time and you knew where they had been parked by the puddle of oil on the ground.
Skydancer, Canada has not become part of the USofA, yet. Toronto is in Canada.
-
Got ask Lazs...
Is there anything you like about us our country or our products?
-
milo... Old hogs were very dependable and I never had one break down bad enough to leave me stranded... the bad rep they got in the old days was because most of em were 30 years old and worn out before they were made into "choppers" the cops used em and ran em into the ground and then someone bought em and "chopped em" they were lucky if the pistons weren't so worn that they were swapping holes. I went through em about every 40 thousand miles with maybe a top end job every 20k... Mine allways started by the third kick... usually sooner. You should see the worn out parts I have seen people run.
New hogs have a 100k lower end... maybe a lot longer. BMW's have 100k engines.
skyprancer... I like the body styles of your cars. It is just frustrating to work on or keep one running here tho. I own a Healey right now. Have had it for 35 years. It just seems that the brits are unable or too arogant to get a clue. Those rover V8 guys you were talking about were driving a car with a 60's buick/olds aluminum V8 it in.
take the wankle engine... a brit desighned it and couldn't make it work... the japs made it very dependable... no british parts on it tho..
the lotus 7... a great car especialy with the Ford motor in it but.... About the last car I would want to own on and island that rained near every day.

...... And you probably see more old Pans and Shovels still kicking around than any other bikes.
Both were built with lots of tolerance and tuff for wear.
The Pan was also probably the easiest bike to maintin and work on. If you have a pair of vice grips, a screwdriver and a small crescent wrench you are pretty well set for emergencies. Put external oilers on the Pan and you have one tough, long lasting ride with little maintenance. An old beer tab is a great feeler gauge for the Pan also.
:D
If I were in the market for a motorcycle that resembled a `59 Chevy station wagon on two wheels , I`d pick me up a newer model Trumpet.
-
sholtzie... exactly the point... they are in trouble. they may be great cars as you say but here in America they are pariahs... too many Americans have been burned by fragil, undependable high maintanence junk to ever want to take a chance again... Even the very good Ford jags are having trouble on the used car market.
The rep is allready there.

I have very little experiance with Italian vehicles except for ducatti and horror of horrors.... fiat. the little scooter vespa/lamberettas seem dependable and pointless... the country seems to produce either really advanced and ultra expensive stuff or total junk on the other end.
I have heard it said that if an American can build something with 20 parts and Italian can build the same thing with 90.
lazs
-
I don't like the 80's chryslers either but at least you can go back to a time when they were great cars and con yourself into buying another one based on em looking like the older ones if nothing else. With brit stuff.... the rep was bad from day one.... people just gave up.

Fiat produced nice small cars, very economic and reliable in the 50-70, then believed to be a great producer and started producing more advanced cars.
Result is that a 40 years old 500 is still on the road and need little maintenance, the new "cinquecento" is a can on wheels that it's trash after 4 years.
The Vespa or Lambretta is not pointless, it was the first mass personal transporter, built with the spare tail wheel and starting engines of the former aeronautical industry.
And there are Vespas as old as 50 years still on the road with more Kms than a car.
Seem that there's people that like it in your country too:
http://www.vespaclubofseattle.com/
Anyway, as for Italian vehicles traits, excluding the crappy low end (equal in all the world), i'd say:
Style, style, style.

naso... I rode a vespa once... it was a nightmare.. the little 500 and I believe it was a 600? were popular here for us high school kids but.... they simply couldn't take the strain of our high speed freeways... they might run forever if never driven on fast open roads but Amercians don't drive that way. I remember being in a friends fiat (600?) and we were on the freeway... huge trucks and everyone honking at us to get out of the way... then we hit a slight grade that lasted for a mile or two... down to 40 mph and overheating...
The scooters seemed pretty dependable but they were dangerous to turn in or to get on high speed roads with. I guess the would be a decent around town vehicle but... 2 strokes are pretty much outlawed anyway.
lazs
-
a nightmare, yes, a Vespa is an awesome tool to learn the extreme driving. :D
You are in danger even at 5 mph ;)
As for the 500(old): right use for the right tool.
It was born for a country that had no fast motorway, only small twisty roads and crowded cityes.
If you ever happen to come here, I'll be glad to bring you in a tour of the old town just to let you imagine how the hell you can drive an oldsmobile there :)
-
"I'll be glad to bring you in a tour of the old town just to let you imagine how the hell you can drive an oldsmobile there "
True!:lol
As for the Rover thing I'm not going to bite. I live two miles from longbridge and thanks to asset stripping BMW gits and fat cat B******s thousands of hardworking people are going to lose their jobs.
Enuff said.

naso... I am sure you are right but..
skyprancer asked me if there were anything about brits, their politics their island or vehicles that I liked..
It is a sunny day here...In a few minutes I am gonna fire up a 450hp big block in a 69 el Camino with a six speed... I am going to the green box behind me and taking out my M1 Garrand and my mini 14 I am gonna take em shooting... They are my guns at my home and I will be shooting ammo that I loaded for em in my spare bedroom.. it will cost me near nothing. I won't be going to a bar to drink tonight... Everyone I meet today will either speak another language or some form of intelligable english...In light of that...
no.. not much about england or the english way that I like.

Then we are living in very different worlds my freind! Though in a strange way we are the same.
Both proud of our country and our beliefs and happy to be here. I buy a British product because I believe in supporting my own. Plus I kind of like the stuff we make.
You Buy yank tanks and are happy with em.
I think GW a fool and your worst pres for 20 years you probably feel the same about our socialist govt ( though I'm hard pushed to see the socialism in it at the mo )
Oh by the way could you tell your beloved GW to keep his nose out of British affairs and we'll stay out of yours that way our boys don't have to get killed so your GW can extend his influence! Urm Wrong. Those are 75's one of the few models developed under BMW that the company was left with when BMW cut and ran, taking the only vehicle that might have saved Rover ( the new Mini designed by Rover employees ) with them. To my mind my neighbour who lost his job today and about 6000 other workers BMW were thieving gits. Mr Towers aint much better either!
The Old 400 series were Honda based models.

Buy what you want... I know I do.. I buy American vehicles because they are suited perfectly for our country. Gas is cheap... roads are long and wide and guys can open up 400-1000 hp cars that we can build on the cheap in a month... the parts come right to the door. Not only that but the sun shines here and it glints off our perfect teeth.... compliments of capitalist dentists on every corner.
You claim to like Americans but hate our pres... I have never heard you say a good thing about anything American. Bush didn't write the constitution or the second amendment.

It is certainly such a nice thing to know that that there are people in your neck of the woods that are not idiots. I certainly don`t include you in this group.
I think British affairs is the last thing "GW" wishs to be involved in. I believe it has actualy fell way down on the list in general. Your "boys" getting killed certainly cannot be blamed on our country. You either have cajones or you don`t. I believe what might upset you so much was when the smacketh was layeth downeth and the choices were put out in the open.by our Pres. I believe it boiled down to...either get on or get out, no in between any more. You are either an ally or an enemy. Simple as that. You are one of the very few that seems to have a problem with that.
Oh yea, I know, you included the standard Zulu/Americon/Skylilter..Tin whatever disclaimer of " just kidding". It didn`t fly the first time and it damn sure don`t fly now.
You are an embarresment to your country, to the world and to men everywhere. When are you going to realize that you are making a fool of yourself? Most everyone else realized this a long time ago.
Sit back , relax and try to do some thinking, would ya? If you are going to try everything that you can to show how jealous you are of the U.S. , then for Gods sake try to use some intelligence and at least come up with something that doesn`t glow in neon how big a total flat liner you are.
You need an electronic ignition conversion get rid of the points, then they go just fine
I just love it when you prove things like this. You bet, take the only thing that`s workable and efficient and change it over to something you are at the total mercy of when it goes south.
3:00 A.M. in the morning, 200 miles from nowhere if the points fail you can either reach in the bags and put another $2.00 set in or pull out the old nail file and give em a swipe......BOOM .. knees back in the breeze and you are a happy camper.
3.00 A.M. in the morning , 200 miles from nowhere and the idiot box goes... It`s gone, kaput, end of story. In stead of your knees out, you have your thumb out and you better make sure to either count your cash or have some Yup plastic handy when the sun comes up cause you are gonna need it.

In all your guises... you are simply a thinly veiled and jealous Ameriahater... Just admit it and get it off your narrow chest.

Gosh man,. Can`t you read? He added the super secret, fool the dumb Americans line of "just kidding".
It`s all the latest rage you know. You are not supposed to be able to see through this. I mean...gee ... wiz.....it`s secret and very wiley ya know.
I mean all down the line, through the all the shades, including the latest, is a cleverly thought out and ingenious plan.
Geezz..the Evil Amercican Empire must be stopped at all costs and Zulu/Ameri/Skylilter/canine is just the secret agent to get it done with his superior intelligence above us mere mortals. I mean even if we were a fraction as sharp as this tack we would have figured out long ago how to get a quarter of beef, 200 lbs of ice, an Amana radar range., garbage disposal, enough wood to BBQ for 50 people minimum, a fridge, a big screen TV, a DVD, a full bath with shower and sauna and 3 midget waiters all on one bike. This was done before even attempting to go to Sturgis in a Chrylser product or before having to singlehandedly wipe out 30 bikers on a pier.
Do you actualy think you can even compare to such superior feats of a super hero such as this?

so... I should be putting "just kidding" in my posts to him? Even if I'm not?
I'm just wondering how long it will be till his girlfriend tells him to change his handle again.

Best I can tell that is the way it works, but of course I have not been granted access to the secret decoder ring. I still need 3 more box tops.

His Loss Gscholz.
And our loss too as two of my neighbours now have no Job! Bad nes round here. Sadly though predictable. To be honest I think bad or unrealistic management killed the company! Just like the majority of our Motorcycle Industry.

Ah I go way for a weekend and the Jackal Lazs buddy boy lets flame the Sh*t out of Sky starts again. Yawns loudly, you guys are pillocks.
There Wasn't that a much quicker way to get the flaming done so that space isn't wasted and people can get on with talking.
Your both utterly predictable xenophobic and realy quite boreing. instead of twisting up your panties every time I post why don't you just chill out, talk to others like you. Ie Closed minded If it aint USA it is S**t people and then you can ignore me. Put your fingers in your ears and go nyah nyah nyah. Then the flame baiting and crud can stop and the rest of us can han have an opinion and a bit of a larf too without every thread getting wrecked by Mr Jackal in particular spouting a load of insult and crud. ( Lazs at least you respond to the points madein some logical fashion )
Remember there's nothing worse than people who take themselves so seriously they can see their own ring!

Japanese autos fragile ? Doesn't nissan make their bodies out of steel that is guages thicker than any other manufacturer? I've had fords, gm's, nissans and toyotas. The nissan and toyota are the only ones that I would deem dependable. If you buy an american automobile with a japanese engine, what you got is a car that will fall apart before the engine needs any major maintenance.
As far as the allusion to german planes.. all of the german fighters, yes both of them were grossly inefficient. Thank goodness Hitler hated the jewish germans.

Upon further introspection, I believe deep down that that ford Tbird contributed more to getting me panocha then any of the other autos. And I believe that is the yard stick with which all things between the mud and the rain are measured.
-
Well maybe export models are different but my girlfreinds Nissan seems very tinny. All the Japanese bikes I've ever owned fell apart if I ever rode them through winter. I guess this all depends on your experience!

My butt feeling tells me my old mercedes rides quieter, firmer and faster than my friends new Toyota. It also gets better mpg despite having 50% bigger displacement and twice the horsepowers.

Actualy you do much better yourself. Your self-flame mode is awesome. Keep up the good work.

Let`s see.... USA jealousy coming through loud and clear.
The "please put me on ignore" whine is working .
The experimental "try someone else`s line because mine are not working" transmitter is functional, but faltering.
The Auto "make the bad man go away" device is still operational after 50 plus uses
Commence the "I`m gonna convince someone that I have a clue theory device" is malfunctioning as usual.
Yep, your good to go. Let er roll.

More come backs than Status Quo!

Actualy you seem to be a lot better job at that than anyone here.
A new whine mode perhaps?
