Title: Interesting B24 Story
Post by: mussie on April 12, 2005, 12:25:56 PM
I found the below here: http://www.detnews.com/2003/specialreport/0306/09/f09-186937.htm

One episode that showed the importance of having so many Liberators in the sky was the Allied attack of German oil fields in Ploesti, Romania.

Taking off from Libya, which was 1,350 miles away, nearly 200 pilots in B-24s planned to surprise the Germans by flying in tree-top high. But the lead planes got lost, and others made wrong turns.

The planes reached Ploesti in a confused state, and 54 were shot down. But the others survived and the attack destroyed 40 percent of the refineries, a huge success for the Allies.
