Since creds for mods is so low, everyone remember that some mods can't be undone... weight redux, port/polish, and engine balance. If ya get any of those, you have to buy a new car to take'em off (and those creds back to your available ones).
This one oughta be fun =)
-
I'm gonna get worked on this one so bad it's not even funny. Grand Valley has wavered between my least liked and most hated course ever since GT1.
-
Really?
Why?
I love and adore Grand Valley. Musta done 50,000 laps since GT1.

And I cant decide between the extra wing or an exhaust.

I haven't run it yet, but I'd say wing. That extra downforce will save you more seconds in a corner than the extra would get you in the straights.
-
I'm going to try a wing to get rid of the understeer. Damn I hate non-N tires. :)
-
!$#@%!@#$!%@#$ understeer.

Swoop and Nash are used to listening to me whine about the rules. :)
Here's something for you PS2-deprived guys. I think Nash mentioned before that he wanted to see what a lap actually looked like. I'm going to try to put one of these up each week with my best lap.
http://home.earthlink.net/~westcoastminicon/Week5.avi
-
Nice lap.
Mine's making less power than yours. Bout 5BHP less. Crossing the line around 1-2 mph slower.......
And yeah, knocking some of the downforce off the rear really improved things, still gotta wait for the tyres to bite before getting hard on the power out of corners though.
Btw, turning off all the driving aids knocked a whole second off my lap at the first attempt.
-
Side note:
Wadda ya reckon to a rules option......instead of choosing car, track and mod $ limit all the time, how about having the option to choose track and a spending limit and letting people pick what car to spend the money on?
Just as an option.....not every week.
??
-
Well we could left it to whomever wins to decide, but I tend to do better when the choices are very limited. I must suck when fiddling with lots of options so I'd probably pick a sucky car. Perhaps some HP-Weight limit would be fair enough.

They did a nice job with those.
For ASM I'm pretty sure they are actually modelling differential braking like on most real world stability control systems. So it keeps the car straight but slows you down some.
TCS is still a big advantage but only when using N tires or an overpowered car.

I'm putting up hotlap videos from the rest of the weeks:
Week 1 - Laguna Seca (http://mikewaltz.net/Week1.avi)
Week 2 - Monaco (http://mikewaltz.net/Week2.avi)
Week 3 - Ice Arena (http://mikewaltz.net/Week3.avi)
Week 4 - Tsukuba (http://mikewaltz.net/Week4.avi)
Week 5 - Grand Valley (http://mikewaltz.net/Week5.avi)
I didn't always remember to save my fastest lap so the videos represent the fastest lap that I did remember to save. They're each 10 to 20 MB.
-
Best I got was 2:09.944. 21MB VIDEO (http://mikewaltz.net/gt4/Week5.avi)
Setup was: Stage 1 Weight Reduction, Chip, Wing (30 front/0 rear), Hoopty BBS Rims.
-
Doh!
I forgot to change the oil.
Same setup as Funky 'cept mine had a downforce of 15 on the rear.
And what gives lads?
It's monday morning and we've got a total of 3 drivers times on the board........
-
H@xx0r!!!
-
Oh and standard rims. :-)
And I think I remember spending the last few quid on a flywheel.
-
That was the funnest one since the Z28 at Laguna Seca, even though I whined about the tires and the car's understeer. It didn't have enough power to overcome the low speed push but with the wing it handled nice at high speeds. Check out on the video how loose it gets in turns 3 and 4. Next time I'll turn on the steering wheel display - from the apex of turn 3 onwards I'm steering right even though 4 is a left turn.

Also Swoop can you give me the split times from your replay? I'm wondering where you gained on me.
Did you ride the curbs in the tunnels?
How about my cut in turn turn 7? :D
-
I made 2:16.8, not many laps and just a chip on the car.
I have a test tomorrow (get-it-right-or-lose-my-job kind of test), so no much time for GT4 these past weeks.
Well, if I fumble the test i'll have more than enough time to get better at this thing :D
-
I didn't save my replay, just noted down the best lap at the end of the session (read: when I got bored trying to beat myself).
Was gonna take a look at your lap but unable to download it, ya might wanna check yr link there bud.
Anyway....my lap:
Turn 1 taken with a really shreckin wide entry. Speed at apex a shade under 60mph with a wide run off onto the left side curb, gently cross back to the right side of the track for turn 2, clip the curb for 1/2 a second to stay as far left as possible for the entry to turn 3.
Turns 3 and 4 can be taken at full power.....just. But enough laps running wide and losing it convinced me to lift at turn 3 cos it screws up the rest of the lap. The 2.09 time was set taking these without lifting but it was one of those lucky laps where I got it right.
Down to 45mph for turn 5, again running wide on the exit.
On turn 6 I'm braking mid way round the corner (between the apexs cos it looks double apex to me) for a sharp entry to turn 7....which is taken at full power and hard right rudder (sorry, too much SHIII) to stay as far right as possible for the slow entry to turn 8.
No, I'm not riding the curbs through the tunnel, just keep as far right as possible for the late braking into turn 9 (60mph corner). A very quick lift to get the tyres to bite after the exit and then I'm back on the power for turn 10 to get max corner exit speed over the bridge.......and I use every inch of that little cut out section in the crash barrier.
Brake into turn 11 as you enter it, down to around 85mph. Ride the slide round the bend until I can see the exit to stay right side ready for turn 12 (50mph), some tyre squeeling and a lift for the entry to turn 13 and the rest is easy.........
Took me around 40 laps to get the switch from turn 12 to turn 13 right in the Z4.

New video links:
Week 1 - Laguna Seca (http://mikewaltz.net/gt4/Week1.avi)
Week 2 - Monaco (http://mikewaltz.net/gt4/Week2.avi)
Week 3 - Ice Arena (http://mikewaltz.net/gt4/Week3.avi)
Week 4 - Tsukuba (http://mikewaltz.net/gt4/Week4.avi)
Week 5 - Grand Valley (http://mikewaltz.net/gt4/Week5.avi)

Turns 3 and 4 can be taken at full power.....just.
That's actually how I came up with the 30F/0R wing setup. I lowered the rear wing until I could take 3 and 4 flat. About 30/7 is perfect up there. 30/0 is less stable but I was faster with that setting so I stuck with it.
On turn 6 I'm braking mid way round the corner (between the apexs cos it looks double apex to me) for a sharp entry to turn 7....which is taken at full power and hard right rudder (sorry, too much SHIII) to stay as far right as possible for the slow entry to turn 8.
That's pretty close to what I was doing. I went wide on the first apex of 6 and then fully cutting onto the concrete for the 2nd apex of 6.
No, I'm not riding the curbs through the tunnel
I meant 10 and 11. Especially on 11, I found that there is a "power up" where you can reduce steering angle greatly when you put the inside wheels on the curb there, and ride around like on a monorail. Gamey but entertaining. :)
-
Really? I'll have to try that.
What speed are you taking turn 11 at?

10 I am accelerating all the way through, but I'm not on the curb there in the video. It's not as easy to exploit the curb in 10 as in 11. In 11 I get part of the curb almost every lap, and you can hold 85-87 on the curb.
-
Just looked at the lap now the link's working. And yeah I meant turn 11 not 10.
I'm taking turn 11 faster. My speed never drops below 80mph on the entry. I'm also taking turn 12 tighter, I clip the curb on the left side to get set up for turn 13.
I think that's the only difference.

Hiya Swoop and the rest of ya GT'ers
Question:
Do any you frequent dedicated Gran Turismo BB's? I know of one thats been pretty popular over the years, they have a lot of useful info, tips and races going on. If interested let me know.
I need to get GT4 myself, but I was so slow in GT3 I kinda got away from it and lost interest....never did get past about 55% complete.
-
Yeah I normally brush the curb at 12. I missed it that time because I was out of shape coming out of the tunnel. Which happened because I got onto the curb too hard, which happened because I braked a little too much entering 11 and ended up with a smaller radius than I wanted.
That lap was a good time only because of 3/4 and 6/7/8 which went about perfect.
I think if I had put the 3/4 6/7/8 from that lap together with a better run through 5 and 12 I might have gotten closer to your time. Check out 5 on the video. It's hard to see because of the camera angle, but I almost spun as I got on the brakes.
To me 6/7/8 is the hardest thing to repeat because you have to alternate agressive/smooth inputs. You have to be really smooth at the entrance and then just brutal through the middle, then very precise picking up the entrance to 9.

That sounds like the way I always did it in earlier versions....ride the rumble strip on the left coming out of turn 12 and going into turn 13, then cut it just shy of the right rumble strip on 13 accellerating the whole way. Caution.....see my previous post about being terribly slow :p
edit:
PS. sorry about jumping in here...kinda miss the game. Good luck with it.
-
BlkKnit by all means post a link to the forum. Hope you get GT4 soon.
I'm enjoying the hotlapping stuff we are doing here. In my "other" driving sim career I drive Group C cars in really long (6 to 12 hour) enduros against live opponents. Each car has a team of drivers who trade off in shifts to cover the whole distance. And there is an unforgiving damage model. So you really really have to be careful and stay out of trouble on your shift, lest you prang the car and let down your team. Which makes it refreshing to pick up GT4 with no damage model and just beat the snot out of the car going for the best time. :)
PS if any of you want to run one of the enduros, let me know, we can always use and extra driver for the longer events.

House of GT (http://hgt.themaille.com/forum/index.php?)
have a look around. I should add that the board owner and admins are good sorts but dont put up with a lot of shennanigans. Well, actually they do, its not like another board of this kind had become over the last few years. BTW I am a mod there, but its not really any work since no one posts much in my forums  I talked them into a flight sims forum, in an attempt to lure some folks to AH, but no luck.
Anyway, enjoy (I am MEFBlackKnight over there)

Did I mention I hate this track? Can't really say why I hate it either. Probably the hazy recollection of trying to keep up with the AI cars at FFT in my used RX7 way back in GT1. Couldn't understand why the car wouldn't turn :D
edit: time was incorrect
-
I am at work right now. Soonest I could run a lap would be in four and a half hours.
-
Four and a half hours til tally up then.

WEEK 6 THREAD (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148589)
