I don't know if its just me, but this new patch has seemes to make everything look much slower on the deck.. The trees maybe to big or something, but when im streaking across the ground at 400+ mph it feels slower for some reason.. In real life trees would go by in a split second at that speed, but It looks like you just kinda mosey on by now.. Anyone else notice that or am I just going crazy?
-
I think the trees are actually quite big compared to what they appear to be.
-
Look at the Toad vs 51gangorama vid. At one point Toad is brushing the treetops. Look at his altimeter and you will see he's at 744'. Those are not oaks, they're mutant redwoods.
-
The altimeter is not AGL, it ASL. Unless those trees were growing from sealevel some, or most, of that 744' would be dirt.
-
I was looking at the trees last night and I felt "something" was wrong but just now realized what it was.
They are the size of big trees but shape of small trees.
Small trees often have the branches growing more upwards then large trees.
This creates a much more "eliptic" shape of the tree then on a large tree.
On large trees the branches are thicker and heavier the angle (ground to branch angle) is much smaller. Simply they are weighed down by their own mass.
This creates a much more "eggish" shaped of the tree.
Compare an old oak with a virgin apple tree. The virgin apple tree has its branches pointing something like 70-80 degrees up while the old oaks lower branches are horisontally, if not down.
Further the trees, especially in the lower LODs, have a very round ballish shape. Yes I know this is due to low level of polygons but the pollies can be adjusted to not create a ballish look.
Only cut trees are ballish. You see extreamly few ballish trees in the wild life.
The illution of a cut tree also creates the illution of a small tree because cut trees, like park trees, are more often then not small.
If a tree is large but gives the illution of beeing small it does indeed create an lower illution of speed.

There's even something different about the terrain that seems to give a slower sense of speed.. again I'm not really sure what it is, but maybe the resolution or textures are too large to give a sense of whizzing along at 400mph 50ft off the ground.. I just know Ive played other games where a sense of speed is very real and AH is lacking in that department it seems.. Its still a great game and I'm not bashing, but just a little constructive criticism..

You might be right there...tonight when I get home I will screenshot coming in over water and check tree height.

I get the same feeling after each update. I am thinking it might just be a psychological response to a new set of stimuli. Or we are creaping around near the ground next to 744ft trees ;)
-
the only problem i have found is that driving a tank around is impossible right now.
invsi-trees and super bouncy invisi-trampolines are causing no end of trouble.
i was very excited when i saw the new terrain that GVs might actually be worth playing in now.
unfortunately not.

Hell Bat I can't stay online enough to get my GV into the woods

One of the things that makes it feel slow in any game of this type is your field of view is overly large for obvious reasons. You are looking a a monitor that takes up 25-45 degrees of forward view...while it is showing 90 degrees of forward view.
This is also why things look more 'real' or seem to have more depth when you zoom in....it decreases your FOV:aok

Even still, there are other games that give a much better sense of speed

was in 262, doing 500mph on deck and it looked incredibly slow? almost looks like the ground cant keep up

It's quite simple really.
The sensation of speed relies on relative distance travelled and perceived. If you drive through a straight highway in the middle of flat plains which has no landmarks, and there are no cars or buildings nearby, then often it becomes very hard to realize just how fast you are driving. The only hint you have, is the engine revving sounds, and the vibrations of the car, and perhaps the wind if your window is open.
The human eye uses a certain reference object around you, to measure the distance and time you've travelled, by comparing the position of that reference point when it was before to where it is now. So, if visible detail is poorer, then the sensation of speed also becomes more dull.
Remember what the trees were like in the older version. The tree barks were darker, and more defined, against the terrain. There were some problems with the 'floating' treeline being invisible, but at least, when you were low, you could clearly see the many tree barks around you and see how fast they swoosh by you. That creates a sensation of speed.
However, the current trees use a different method of depiction, and IMHO the colors of the trees aren't as pronounced against the color of the terrain tiles as it used to be.
In other words, the new trees look much better than the old trees when you are on the ground.. but when you see it from above, it looks very blobby, and it's hard to tell the tree/leaves from the grasses... where it starts.. where it ends.
The detail is more blurry, thus, the sensation of speed is dulled.

i know that driveing 90 in a vehicle looks faster that the ground in ah 100 feet off the deck doing 500mph
-
If our terrain textures had as much detail as real life, you'd think 500mph at deck is pretty damned fast m8.

Kinda seems like a sunday stroll instead of a balls to the wall tree top barn storm
-
OMG!!!
Go to guncam and look down!!!
I get nothing butt stuttering, any body else?
same thing from cockpit veiw.
-
Play it through a few times 68DevilM, takes a bit for the viewer to load everthing up.
But it did seem rather slow, any math wizzes out there wanna do the math? I am sure that you can calculate the speed at which you were moving. :)

emailed film to HT and they said it would be fixed in upcomeing patch

yah, things are slower through my perception. 400mph seems like and is like moving 50 mph whether your on the deck or at 10k. Now the warps are as fast as ever, but the rest has got a ssslooowww- mmmotionnnn to it. Its a acesinspacehigh type feeling. Maybe even like a scary movie , your feet are moving fast as hell, but your not not going anywhere. lmao!! only way to explain it. :p
