Last night was second night in a row, around 8, 9 oclock, internet service was hosed.
So I try to call and get, "Were sorry our call volume is heavy, call back later." Then other times I would get a ***** busy signal.
Finally around 11:00 oclock I get someone and they tell me that, "ohh we had server problems last night, but fixed the problem. We have people working on it."
So is it fixed or are you working on it?
WTF. What do you think the odds are that I wont have service tonight?
-
You in Dallas Mars? I had the same thing happen to me last few nights.. pain in the arse!
-
No I'm in CT, which makes me wonder how bad Comcast situation is.
-
Same here last night in Florida.... same excuse from Comcast .. LOL
-
Yup, last 2 nights in Dallas same issue... I could never get through to comunistcast, got a constant busy signal... maybe they switched to internet phones.

LOL I wish that was my problem.

same in Boston Tues and WED

My whole city isd having trouble with Comcast service cutting out regularly.
I'm blessed with about 5 service cuts each day...
:(
But I have to say that Comcasty support has been very helpful and thatv they sent out a techniciuan the same day I called who informed me that they are upgrading the network in response to these problems.
They better be, because its mucho bad PR for Comcast to have so many high speed internet problems in the middle of silicon valley.
-
SF here.
Comcast was down for 1 hour last night. Only happened once before about 3 months ago.

That sounds like what was going on.. My friend said something about the dns servers being down, and there you have it..
-
Uh, they need to fire thier network admin. What numpty runs a large network without providing roll-over for DNS requests?
That way you can take down DNS servers with virtually no degradation to the clients. duh.
Unless they are using Windows for the OS! Surely not.
-
Im in Maryland, and have experienced this for the past 4 to 5 days. But last night, I couldn't get the browser up but, had no trouble logging on to AH and the MA
-
Same in Atlanta also.
Definitely DNS. Could ping IP address but no name resolution.
-
love my bellsouth DSL
-
Jersey here. While I was able to play in the MA my son had problems with the rest of the net AIM, Xbox ,Surfing etc.
I wouldnt say my MA experiace was problem free. but it wasnt terrible either.
-
Happened here in CA too.. Comcast goes out alot in the midnight hour too.
-
I used to have comcast cable internet service. I was getting about 5% packet loss pretty regularly and called to complain. They pretty much told me to **** off saying that the 'average' customer doesn't complain about packet loss so they don't investigate the problem.
Quit using comcast, and see if you can get speakeasy DSL.

Skuzzy says,

I say,
Dude have you ever worked at a LARGE ISP or Networking Center? The people at the top are there because of their social skills, not their technical abilites. Every dotcom job I ever had (about 6) my boss was a dumb mofo.
It seems to be the corporate way. Start a company with a couple of brilliant minds. They leave and the positions in the company are filled by friends and freinds of friends with little or no bearing on their skills. Eventually everything implodes and the company goes under or gets it sh*t together.
Because you are absolutely right, this is simply inexcusable and easily avoidable.
-
Quite right g00b. There is definately some level of incompetency at work there. DNS is just something that does not go down, unless there is a major DOS attack going on at the ROOT servers and that is not the case here.
-
Change your DNS servers to public servers and problem solved.
-
opps

Here in NJ I have not had any problems at all. But they are doing work on upgrades for speeds 4 times faster than the 1.5
If you check there site they will tell you if its done in your area and you have to reset your modem. Also know someone that works with them and they say the are going to goto fiber optics and it will be 1000 times faster :D not sure how long this will take :(
-
Its not just comcast mars. Or is charter part of comcast?
-
"Its not just comcast mars."
i find the earth service to be a bit more reliable...
to much freaking word play in this thread...
"There is definately some level of incompetency at work there."
maybe they discovered that by randomly shutting down there servers for a couple hours, they can save thousands on electricity...

yes I too had the same exact problem both nights. It started around 9 EST and by 11 EST it was ok. In the year and nine months that I have exclusively had comcast cable this is the third night that I lost the internet. I use it a lot.
I have 6mb down 768kb up
Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

What DES said. Change your DNS settings.
If this happens to you again....Go to MY NETWORK PLACES, right click and click on properties, right click on your cable connection, and click on properties, double click on INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP), Go to DNS, and uncheck "obtain DNS automatically", check "use the following DNS server", and in the box type in a public DNS server, like 4.2.2.1 and close all, reopen a new browser, and you should see results. This won't be as fast as Comcast, but it will work. Change it back when Comcast is over it's little problems. You can search for public DNS servers....use what works for you.

Numpty...... Numpty......... huh I like the sound of that.If I were to have any more children, would that name be more fitting for a girl or a boy ?
-

Probably has to do with the FIOS service Rosco. I noticed some bouncing in my area about a month before they deployed it.

You think this is just in ISPs? It's that way in most Corps. the guy who can talk tech around a conference table and never objects the those truelly STUPID ideas the suits put forth, and when they fail (as they always will) he blames it on one of his poor techs, gets made CIO, while those of us who know what we are doing and speak up are labeled as "not a team player" and get passed over. Seen it SOOOO many times.
Skuzzy is right, if it was DNS those guys should be canned! Me thinks that this is a smoke screen though.

I'm not sure I understand. Why would a mjor Corp knowingly do something that could disrupt service and potentially drive customers to their competitors?

Ignorance Ren, ignorance.
Ren, I do not know if you are old enough to remember this phrase, but "No one ever got fired for buying IBM". It was the creedo of every IT guy/gal for every major corporation for years.
Even when the product was inept, they still kept buying them.
In the real world, it is has little to do with 'doing the right thing' and more to do with, 'doing whatever it takes to keep my job, even if it is wrong, especially if I can blame someone else'.

I couldnt even drag manual ip's outta them.
I took my 486 gateway/routor to my other job and its running there for the network ... Darn darn darn ...
(Insert Closet digging here ... compleate w/ the bowling ball .. that falls off the top shelf along with the samari sword that follows it)
ok tossed in my old linksys Befsr41 routor ... ( Skuzzy should remember this one from AH1 ) it used to do some wierd things in game ... (I felt it wasnt correct thats why I quit using it)
Official Rosco disclamer : I am not resposiable for any ....
Warping
ghosting
cloaking
totally wierd kills
or any other wierd annonomalies ....caused by or seen from my plane .
Plese send all complaints to http://www.Verizon.net

Oh yeah, i'm just another "old pheuart" and remember the IBM shirt and tie days. Talking about that old stuff heres something I'll share... I used to fly the Marine A4M sim that was housed in a building the size of a triple car garage. The actual cockpit sat of rails to move in and out of the viewing dome and had a foot print of 4x12'. The rest of the building was dedicated to racks and racks which made up the computer.
I remember climbing in and pulling the start handle. When the time came to hit the igniters I popped the throttle and the computer crashed. The technician went over to a "drawer" (think filing cabinet sized and yanked a 10x10" card out of the drawer and said, "I think this is the problem child". I asked him what the card was for. He said, "it's 8k of ram". :D. I was so shocked that the card was so huge yet held so little I laughed. He said, don't laugh. I could probably replace this building with a 1 car garage for the sim and a 386 computer to run it. As an after thought, the Navy closed down the NAS and the Argentinians showed up looking to buy it. In fact, I flew it for them to look at. To make a long story short, they didn't buy it and I missed the auction where I could picked it up for around $200. Imagine your own Skyhawk in your garage. :)
In the real world, it is has little to do with 'doing the right thing' and more to do with, 'doing whatever it takes to keep my job, even if it is
wrong, especially if I can blame someone else'.
I agree and it's wonderful to be able to work in a job where only I and the captain of the flight signs the flight release. We are the only two responsible for our actions and I do it 30 times a day. There's no passing the buck. It's a job where a professional gets to be professional and not always looking over his shoulder and does it right everytime. Stress levels are high but how else can anyone feel "alive"
