To make real terrains use the MapMaker program, you'll need .DEM files for geographical locations, the site where to get them from is in the instructions, I have an online tool for longitude and latitudes, go here (http://maps.esri.com/srmap/applet/srmap.html) for this very helpful tool, go to  Aces High Terrains (http://www.ah-terrains.com) for the MapMaker program.

(http://www.onpoi.net/ah/pics/users/90_1113663411_wizardss.png) This is an actual global location made from the MapMaker program, I should warn you though that the .DEM files are extremly large.

Pay close attention, they are free click the area you want it will open a new window highlighted in blue click on it and save, you will need a program to decompress these files, I use WinRAR anyway after you open them just keep the .DEM file, and here is a site for one more thing you need  gusgs1_2.img (http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/glcc/glcc_version1.asp#Global), scroll down to USGS Land USC/Land Cover Scheme, download, it will read like this gusgs1_2.img.gz, before installing it in the mapmaker folder rename by removing the .gz
