Bush: 'I Don't Want You Reading My Personal Stuff'
Thu Apr 14, 2005 05:49 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush said on Thursday he does not send e-mail, not even to his twin daughters, because he fears "my personal stuff" would be made public.
"There has got to be a certain sense of privacy," he told the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
Bush volunteered his aversion to e-mail during a discussion on whether his administration is sufficiently responsive to requests made under the Freedom of Information Act.
Advocates of greater openness in government charge the Bush administration has used the need to guard homeland security as an excuse to keep more information secret.
Bush said the government receives about 3.5 million FOIA requests a year and that he is for open government but does not want information released that could endanger lives.
"I would hope that those who expose documents are wise about the difference between that which truly would jeopardize national security and that which should be read," he said.
Sean Moulton, a spokesman at OMB Watch, a group that tracks decisions by the White House Office of Management and Budget and other government agencies, said: "This is a government that is getting worse by the day in terms of permitting the public access to information and documents that they have paid for."
He said all administrations have been difficult on the issue "but this administration is being extremely opportunistic with homeland security concerns and using that as an excuse to shut down public access."
Bush has pressured Russian President Vladimir Putin to allow for greater freedom of the press in Russia. "We got to make sure our own press is free. I know that," he said.
But when it comes to e-mail, Bush said he avoids it because "everything is investigated in Washington" and as a result "we're losing a lot of history, not just with me, but with other presidents as well."
As a result, he does not use this form of communication to talk to his twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara.
"I don't want you reading my personal stuff," he told the editors.
"There has got to be a certain sense of privacy. You know, you're entitled to how I make decisions. And you're entitled to ask questions, which I answer. I don't think you're entitled to be able to read my mail between my daughters and me," he said.

GW Bush's emails are a private matter. Of course your emails are a matter of national security.
-
I think what he is getting at is he does not want the liberal media twisting around something he said.

There is no liberal media but it wouldnt take one to twist his words:)

wow... he doesn't think email is a secure way transmit pesonal info and.... worse... he actually believes that his personal email would be of interest to some hacker or news outlet..
what a dolt eh?

with a media that ****s its pants if someone "important" has a stain on there shirt???
anywhere else in the world and you'd be right.

oh come on... you don't think the media is interested in Bush's personal affairs do you? Even if they got something they wouldn't use it to embarass him would they?

What difference would it make? He's embarrassed on a daily basis as is.

Ok...so he doesn't use e-mail to keep his personal messages private...it makes sense.
Then to be logical all the US government has to stay away from emails as well to keep all those secret messages confidential...yeah riiiiight.
Unless he rates his privacy more important than the national security...
Of course, there is the remote possibility that, being too computer-illiterate to use a good cryptography software like PGP, he thinks that the hacker-for-the-media risk is a good excuse to cover his lack of PC-knowledge.....

???? No liberal media??? Who are you, and what did you do with the real Silat? I mean, surely you just arrived on this planet, right?

Well... I never claimed to be a bright guy but I can do some things fairly well... computer savy isn't one of em. I barely get by... like about 90% of the folks out there using puters.
Seems to me it is all the guys who know everything about computers that have all the problems tho. I don't think I want the pres to be a puter geek staying up all night living on cheetos. I sure as hell don't want him to have the same time sense as one.
let me put it into perspective... One guy knows how to fly 70's fighter jets and the guy posting about how dumb he is can navigate around obscure computer programs and be secure from hackers..... maybe..

Wow...
Firstly: Some posting in this thread obviously have no idea what "secret documents" are if they're talking about them being transferred via e-mail.
Secondly: Bush doesn't want someone reading his private e-mail, so he doesn't send them. How the **** is this news?

Mini and Lazs:
Wow.... are the US govt agencies forbidden to use e-mail?
If no: do they use it to send 'confidential' information? (not the super-secret-007 stuff but any information which shouldn't be public)
If no: ok...then it is coherent
If yes: why are they allowed to when the Prez thinks it is a risk for his privacy?? Why does he let them do if it is so insecure IHO?
I agree that e-mails are extremely vulnerable to attacks...unless they are crypted/signed with a decent software. PGP is far from obscure (sorry if you haven't ever heard of it....but it's not MY fault), pretty secure and extremely easy to use: for an ex-fighter pilot, 30 mins explanation should be more than enough to cover the daily use. And 5 extra seconds are necessary to crypt / decrypt mails...so I stand my ground: your Prez:
1) doesn't know much about puters
OR
2) is really badly advised on this matter
In any case, he should avoid to debate this topic if he doesn't want to look like a clown.
-
ya know... I betcha that Bush has some pretty bright puter boys at his disposal.... hell... I bet they even show up on time when he calls em...
I bet they are telling him something to the effect that "no email is secure from them or hackers no matter what is done to it."
If I were him... I would believe em... I sure wouldn't try to bury myself in computer geekness... he probly has better things to do.

According to an article I read this morning
"Bush once was a prolific e-mailer. But he signed off from cyberspace just before taking office in 2001 after lawyers told him that his presidential e-mail communications would be subject to legal and archival requirements"
Not because he was afraid of how secure it was.
So he doesnt think that his personal correspondance with his kids are anyones buisness.
Neither do I.
I fail to see what the big deal is.
That being said
Now Im no computer expert but even I know that no encription program is impervious. If hackers have shown one thing its that where there is a will there is a way. and they always seem to manage to find a way if for no other reason then to prove they can.
-
i dont think that they are any of my business either.
nor are mine the government's business.
but try telling them that.
"youre on the no fly list."
"why?!"
"thats confidential."
"how do i get off of it?"
"sir, that's confidential and if you continue with this inquiry we are going to have to stamp you as a terrorist and strip you of your rights."
"i better call a lawyer."
"sorry sir, but once that happens you wont have access."
"i see, so what can i do about it?"
"be nice. write newspeak like everyone else and don't make waves...enjoy your life...or we will revoke your water priveledges...have a nice day"

First smart thing the man has done, why crack on him for it?
-
im not. i think its pretty smart too.
but then again, i am not the one who sponsored the patriot act, requires loyalty oaths from my citizens for events and/or is pushing for banning private data encryption.
door should swing both ways.

OK.. you really don't have a clue.
All e-mail sent between government offices is monitored for security of some sort. Sending stuff to private e-mail almost guarantees it. I seriously doubt anything all that important is done via e-mail simply because you don't even want to aproach the security line in the government.
The article is not discussing the security of sending e-mail. That's pretty much a matter of record. The article is discussing what is made available to the public on the net. You are simply confusing security with privacy.
