Title: VMF-225 F4U-1
Post by: Greebo on April 15, 2005, 03:52:30 PM
Rogerdee asked me to do another F4U-1 a while back and this is it. This aircraft is from USMC squadron VMF-225 based at Vella Lavella in Nov 43. It was repainted in the field with the three tone blue scheme and red outlined markings.

I've redone a lot of the surface effects and weathering from my old F4U-1s. Possibly I've overdone the weathering, can't make up my mind about it. The skin is up at The Skin Department (http://www.ah-skins.com/index.php) if you'd like to take a closer look.

Looks great Greebo.  Doesn't look overweathered at all.  Considering the conditions the Marines were operating those birds, it looks just right :)

Terrific job, Greebo!    Your skins just look so dang real I could reach out and touch them...

That underside detailing is about as authentic as I've ever seen.

greebo, have you seen this?

Might help you on the weathering

Quote
THE RESULT- A Corsair in as near to totally authentic and original condition from 1944 as it is possible to achieve. Paintwork, markings, stencilling, even the scratches and wear marks from the period are all original. Of the forty of so remaining Corsairs around the world (some in flying condition, some on display in Museums) there are no known examples in their truly original condition other than the FAAM’s Corsair KD 431.

Thanks Furball, I hadn't seen that. Looks like a trip to Yeovilton might be on the cards.

I've just realised that when I posted this skin to the Skin Department I forgot to add the alpha file which hides the VF-17 panels on panels on the cowling sides. Lucull has kindly added this to the zip file, so it should be OK now.

Tex, much as though I'd like to do more FAA stuff, I've already done three British F6Fs and there aren't any other really different schemes for it.

I may have a go at the F4U Furball posted but I need to get up to the FAA Museum and get some photos of it. Might be a few weeks before I can. Need to get some history on it too.

Unfortunately, there are too many bugs in the later F4Us to do FAA style disruptive camo schemes on them. I could use the effects off the VMF-225 skin to update my FAA F4U-1 though.

Beside USN/USMC/FAA.......

Why not the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Greebo?

They flew Goodyear FG-1A Corsair (Basic the same for Vought F4U-1A and shame we don't have -1A yet) until end of the war and it should be interesting if you ever make one.

I had it in my mind that someone had already posted a RNZAF Corsair skin. However I can't find anything on the Skin Department and a search of this BBS turned up nothing, so maybe my memory's playing tricks on me.

The upper scheme of the picture below won't work due to top/bottom mirroring of the wingtips and cowling, but the second one would. Just need to find out what that name and noseart looks like up close.

Greebo the RAF F6F Id like to see is the one we have (Blue red roundel) but without the damn invation stripes.

I really dont like the invation stripes, they just clutter down nice paint schemes.

Found a suitable Hellcat, this is Lt Cmdr Stanley Orr's 804 Squadron aircraft, based on HMS Emperor during the Tirpitz strikes in 1944. I'll have to change the letter E into something reversable like a T, since the fuselage sides are mirrored.

I painted an RNZAF one Greebo. It was rejected at least once coz of the bleeding colour near wing roots.

Id love to send it to you for completion/rework if you want.

Its got the appellation Tutae Wera on the side which is Maori for "**** Hot!"

send an email to byoung@paradise.net.nz and Ill return what I have.

I know about the problem with the wing bleeding. Its a bug with all the F4Us (except the F4U-1, which has patches to hide the bug). It effictively limits the later F4Us to the '44 USN all dark blue scheme.

BTW the only skin I've ever had completely rejected was a tri colour VF-17 F4U-1A done on the F4U-1 skin, so that dodge won't work either. Sorry, there's no way around the problem until HTC redo the F4Us.

Perhaps you could do the all dark blue RNZAF Corsair shown earlier in this thread? I'm not going to have time for a while.
