Is it possible to watch other skins than the default (stdshape.res) skins? I'd like to view the official downloadable skins in the viewer.
How about being able to select a plane, then choose from the usermade skins... pretty much how it works in game?
If it already is possible; then I haven't been paying attention in class ;)

Is there any way to view the usermade skins that AH downloads?
-
Of course, silly.
Make a folder in your skins directory. Name it whatever with a number after it. Example: 190a5 skin would be 190a51 or 190a52 etc etc.
The skin viewer will automatically detect these folders (which you have obviously placed the skins in), and there is a drop down box below the plane drop down box. It lists the folder names. Viola!

Hmmm, what am I missing?
I made a folder named p38j1, in which I placed p38j1.res (from the skins folder)
I made a folder named p38j2, in which I placed p38j2.res....
When I chose P38J in skin viewer there was a drop down box listing p38j1 and p38j2, but nothing happened when I chose them or hit the refresh button, the default skin still showed.
You need to run it by me once more, slooooooowly.
I'm not stupid, just never in a hurry. :p

The folders should only contain the source for the skin. The .res files are what is built from the source.
-
Meaning, if you download something from AH-skins.com, unzip it to that folder "p38j1". Not the res files, the .bmp files and all that.

I'm lost too.
So you make a new folder (190D96), then you place all those bitmaps and text files in there. Then you launch skin viewer. Then I hit the browse button and the only option I have is for a .RES file, if i try to open one of the existing .RES files it fails. If I choose "All files" and try to open a BMP it fails. If I hit "refresh" it does nothing. If I hit save textures it crashes.
I'm sure it is something simple, but what am I missing?

Ok then, gotcha.
Allow me to make a simple request/suggestion: Make the skinviewer work like the hangar in the game. Let all the downloaded skins show in the dropdown list by default.
What I expected from the skinviewer was a quick and easy way to get a good look at all the skins in the game. I understand it's a skinner's tool, but I would love to see this functionality for us normal users.

You choose the plane type in the upper combobox then the skin in the lower combobox.
That's all :) , you don't have to click on browse

It works now, all I did was reboot. Maybe since I was running the old viewer, then upgraded it then reran the new one something was cached (???) or something like that. It's fine now and brain dead simple to use. Thanks for the help!

I've gotten it to work, downloaded some skins and viewed them with the viewer.
I want to put stronger emphasis on my request; that the viewer, by default, show all the skins available in the game (limited to those that are already downloaded).
I have not been able to find all the skins I wanted to view, the ah-skins.com website is not up to date on what skins are approved and included in the game. I don't blame them for it or expect them to keep up with the in-game skin list. I could probably dig up old threads and hopefully be able to find valid links for the skins I want to view, but it isn't worth the time for me.
The skin viewer could be a terrific tool for us normal players to, quickly and easily, get a better look at all the skins available in the game.

I will allow myself a *bump* here, it's such a good day. :)

Jodgi, if you go into AH, go to the hangar, view the skin you WANT to see in the skins viewer (only you're in AH, not the skin viewer), the right click the plane list and save the skin I believe it might let you save that skin (and not the default, I mean). I will have to try this out.

krusty that still only lets you save the default skin the only wy to view the other skins is really off line and stat on a runway then f3 f8 and zoom

yea you can do that for the default scheme but once you've done that you can just add another scheme to the new dir you make.
