A humble plea from a poor sod who has been in a low furball, angling down on an opponent, ready to fire, hits "Z" and finds out that his hands were in the wrong place as he minimizes AH2 with the Windows menu key.
It happens at least once every sortie. I'm not kidding. Some of the time I have enough alt/AOA to let me get back before I die. Most of the time I do not have this luck.
Can you program AH to trap this key? We will still have CTRL-ESC, we will still have ALT-TAB, and so forth.
-
Remap the key.
-
You can also disable the windows key entirely in the registry. I can dig up the info if you're interested.
-
Frank, maybe, I'll try it shortly, but it's still annoying. And now it'll do whatever it's mapped for instead of zooming (when I hit the wrong damn key -- AGAIN!)
Plank: I use the WinKey. It's helpful in many instances.
-
My keyboard doesnt have a winblows key anymore, they pop right out. :)
-
I had something similar, when I hit alt+tab, and afterwards returned to AH, the colors were messed up (paint colors) and had to restart...
-
I know how you feel.
I just remapped the bail out (enter x3) junk after bailing out with 10 kills the other night in a tempest.
Why I waited all these years to remap it is a good question. Lazy. :P
-
How on earth can you "accidently" hit enter 3 times??
-
It counts the "ENTER" at the end of a chat box, that sends your text out. If you type fast, like I do, you can hit enter 3 times fast enough to bail.
I have since shown more restraint, and typed slower and less frequently
-
That reminds me of a lancaster nightbombing raid where I said you get nightvision goggles by pressing enter 3 times....
-
Why bail out at all? I disabled that junk a long time ago. It's a much faster ride in the plane :)
-
i mapped my windows keys out using a screwdriver.
-
Frank: You currently cannot map it in AH. There's no option. Not supported. I use the keyboard a lot. I started in DOS and have been typing all my life. Even in other sims I have 1 hand on keyboard and 1 hand on stick. I have fast enough reflexes that I can get away with this, I suppose.
But that WinKey is still bugging me (only in AH mind you, I use it often outside of AH)

Very simple really.
I type very fast and I dont use Vox. It didnt happen often. Hardly at all to be honest. But after that I figured it'd be wise to get rid of it.
And yup. Riding it down is much faster and perferred.

take a peice of thick paper or thin cardboard and slide it under the key when you play.
-
There is a free app called "I Hate This Key" that will disable the windows key.
-
Unfortunately I actually LIKE the windows key when not gaming. It's used as part of the hotkey shortcuts for most of the native components and functions in Windows (windows+e for Explorer, windows+r for Run, windows+l for FUS, etc). It's very handy when I'm working and I need to navigate quickly. Unfortunately it can also interfere with games. So it would be nice if it were possible for AH and other games to block this key.
-
As others have said....... just REMOVE THE KEY itself... they pop right off the keyboard.... little ol'screwdriver will do the Trick...... disabled bam!
edit: then put it back when your done gaming ...
:p

HITECH- Can we hear your opinion on this?
I have found myself in many a furball...heck, even RTB and trying to hit autopilot (X) and accidently hit the windows key ending with my demise.........
I understand I can easily pop the key out, but I do use the key when running other windows applications....and quit frankly, im not one to destroy a machine that i purchased with my money...
HTC would it be that difficult to disable to windows key in the next patch?
please give us some feedback

you guys don't know the worst of it.
AH auto-minimises for me about once every 20 mins or so.
and yes bailing out is A) a waste of time B) frustrating untill you remap it.

Make sure to shut down all programs that give popups, anti virus programs, messengers, ect ect.

zoom should be on your jstick :)
-
I got 1 trigger and 3 buttons on my stick. I find I need them for fire pri, fire sec, select sec, and check 6. I got 4 more on the base and those are flaps up/down, damage, and brakes. No more buttons lol
-
ya need a stick with at least two hats on it
one for views and other for zoom on/off, in/out
-
A lot of us can't afford sticks like that. I'm content to use the keyboard, as I bet 90% of all other pilots are. I just wish HTC would implement WinKey trapping.
-
Popping key on and off wont hurt nothing, and a joy stick with buttons start at 20.00 bucks.... lol.. try this... turn your keyboard upside down then your win key is at the top, outa your way. lmao!

i find veiwing is easier and more "natural" with the keyboard, plus with the keyboard your thumb is free to press other buttons while your looking around...

Hear are some quick fixes for your troubles. You can run these before you play and them re-enable them.
To disable these keys save the following text to a file with the file names listed above the ---cut--- line
(Sorry for the line breaks, don't know why it does that. Each entry should be on one line.)
disable_left_windows_keys.reg
-----cut---
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,5B,E0,00,00,00,00
------cut-------
disable_right_windows_key.reg
------cut------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,5C,E0,00,00,00,00
----cut----
disable_both_windows_keys.reg
---cut---
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,00,00,5B,E0,00,00,5C,E0,00,00,00,00
---cut---
remove_scancode_mappings.reg (restores your default setup)
----cut----

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]

Hope this is usefull.
