Title: Russian for water
Post by: Suave on April 18, 2005, 03:30:13 AM
I hope my squadmates don't disown me for this, but I just don't get it. I've had very good vodka, courtesy of my hussar brethren. But to me, vodka just tastes like alcohol and water. The good quadruple distilled potato vodka has even less taste. Pearls before swine. The only alcohol I find genuinely tasty besides good beer is tequila. Mmmmm a doble de Patron would go down just right about now..

That's the idea.  You get rid of all the crappy tasting impurities.  All other distilled spirits are just primitive cultures' failed attempts to make vodka.

Between things that taste good and things that taste nothing, I chose wheat beer.. and a good tequila.

A good red wine beats beer and especially vodka any day.

Fish is the symbol of health, similarly fruit is the symbol of freshenss. To partake of it in it's rotten state is contra-natural.

I think that's what turns me off the most about wine. If you've ever been around a pile of rotting berries or fruit..the smell.. that's what wine tastes like.

A good beer is like a good bread. Wholesome, fullfilling, tastey.

Beer is an extract or rotten grain. It's not much different from wine count out the raw material.

It's painfully obvious you've never had the opportunity to try a good wine Suave. :)

Of interest, I read a story where some enterprising college students discovered that if you run super cheap (aka, plastic bottle) Vodka through a Britta filter once or twice, it tastes like expensive super vodka.

Ummmm....no its not.  Beer is made from a mash involving malted barley.  Nothing rotten in it at all.  The closest you get to rotten stuff in beer is the bacteria cultures used to make Lambic ales.  Try educating yourself next time before you open your mouth.

Christiania vodka is the best IMHO.  definitely worth a try.

It's a 6 times distilled potato vodka from sweeden.

Thors Hammer vodka was the smoothest I have ever tasted, but I don't think they make it anymore.

Really, the only time you need a super gourmet vodka is when drinking martini's.  Other than that, Skyy, Absolut, Ketel One, or Stoli is more than good enough.  It's funny when people order a tall greyhound or seabreeze, then comment,

   "ahhhh  that's good vodka."

Once you mix it with anything, it doesn't matter.  Yes it may be worth it to drink very good vodka while mixing if it does not give you a hangover because it has less impurities.  But don't mix vodka because of the taste.

Heck, even a Martini is 1/3 water.  Once you get done shaking it it's pretty diluted by that point.

I went to a bar in San Francisco where they porured the vodka from the bottle straight from the deep freeze, with a big chunk of ice around the bottle.  Still very cold, but pure vodka, no dillution.  I could definitely tell the difference.

It's just as correct to say beer is rotten grain as to say wine is rotten grapes.

As if I wouldn't know how beer is produced dolt.

neither beer nor wine is rotten

both simply fermented

one from grain, one from grapes.

Yep.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=define%3Aferment

Quote
In its strictest sense fermentation (scientifically called zymosis) is the energy-yielding anaerobic metabolic breakdown of a nutrient molecule, such as glucose, without net oxidation. Fermentation yields lactate, acetic acid, ethanol, or some other simple product.
'Metabolic breakdown' == rot.

I think we all agree, Suave may be both a conditioner AND a shampoo in one, but he's no drink connoisseur or chemist.

they are breaking down the starches into simple sugars,  glucose, fructose..................... .....that the yeast can eat.  Yeast is a living organism.  the byproducts of a yeast eating a sugar is alcohol and CO2.   There is breakdown,  but nothing "rotten"

Confucius says: Better have yeast in bottle than pants. Yeast is a good slave but a bad master.

Usually when people say that it’s “good”, they mean it was expensive. IMHO if it’s not made in Russia, then it sucks. I have yet to find good Vodka made in USA. I my self like St Petersburg vodka, it’s slightly sweetened, goes down easy and taste good.

I said from Russian, not Ukraine. I don’t think they made vodka from Chernobyl.  :D

Would be great for nightclubs to get glowing customers as part of the entertainment. The customers could power the soundsystem and lighting for a rebate on drinks. Sockets in the bar for plugging them in.

I've seen it go for over $3500 a bottle....

So, yeah, that is a good price, better to have a wholesaler friend purchase it.

Just one note for the occasional traveller - even the official liquor shops in russia often sell moonshine relabeled that can contain leathal levels of methanol.

In essence you can't be sure of the contents whenever you buy liquor from there.

Remember this if you plan to shop with locals.

About the cognac..

I'd rather save some pennies and get a bottle of this instead: http://www.internetwines.com/mb786464.html

After you finish a few bottles each you can buy a car with the difference. :)

I can't tell you how many times  (ok, 2-3)  there have been 3 shots left of Louie, and 2 guys will buy me (bartender) a shot so they can get the bottle

Want an expensive cognac?

Hardy Perfection (http://www.wineglobe.com/14431.html)

I've only seen 2 places that have it.  Our casino can't even get a bottle,

Shot prices

Louie XIII -----$125
Hardy Perfetion  -----$550

A SHOT

I would love to try it

even more expensive (http://www.sendwine.com/id103641list646product.html)
