In Naval terms the "V" means "fixed wing" aircraft.
VF = fixed wing fighter(used in squad designations)
VP= fixed wing patrol
VS= fixed wing ASW
CV= Carrier, fixed wing
whereas
HS = Helicopter ASW squadron
LHA= Amphibious multi-purpose assault ship, helicopter
It's not hard to find out. Of course I have the advantage of being an Air controller in the Navy.

SK2 here. If it's a C+V then that means birdfarm and that in turn means I am gonna be up for 3 days straight pulling cargo for them. No thanks.

I hope not...shoot soon my rate will die anyway..I am working with the team that is planning the QM/OS rating merger..we will be PM 's or Professional Mariner...how ghey is that? Sounds like a merchant marine grade more than a navy rate..besides I always thought Operations Specialist sounded cool...oh well.

I don't how much has changed in the last 10 years, but a QM/OS merger sounds like a good thing. IMHO, the QM job was too narrow in scope to be its own rating, especially with the advent of GPS navigation. I guess they won't simply absorb QM into OS without a name change to go with it.
When I was in, I worked with guys that had been around for the split of the RD rating into EW and OS. That seemed to work out okay.
Do they still have AIC/ASAC or did they merge those as well? I was an AICS when I got out.

ASAC became ASTAC and is broader in scope and responsibility...AIC is still around..In fact I am an instructor at Dam Neck and work in the Air Control Training office...AIC Basic, Intermediate, and AICS (sup) are taught by the AIC's in the office...I teach the lower level helo control courses (ASTAC school is at NOB Norfolk) Air Direction Controller (ADC) and a rather new one SCAC (sea combat air controller) which merges some ASAC with some AIC and also International ASAC which is taught to many different nationalities (We have a class of 3 South Koreans onboard right now)..Of course us Helo controllers are better than AIC's any day:D
EW's are now CT's...DS's are now FC's...DP's and RM's are now IT's..SM and QM merged last year..and now we will most likely merge with the QM's which means we will not only do the QM job we have always done anyway..but also the SM job..which should be fun...I'm all for it..I just hate the name they want to give us...eventually the Navy wants to go down to a total of about 10-12 rates.
BTW..I think we had the conversation last year when I used to be known as "Coolridr"

Here you go do this one. My first duty station after boot camp.
CVSG 50 Key West Florida. It stood for "Command Carrier Anti- Submarine Airgroup 50". It consisted of all Helecopters...HS 1 as I recall...Sikorski aircraft. (not sure on spelling.) This was June 1962.

That wouldn't be the first time the Navy screwed up it's own abbreviation standards..probrably because the word Carrier (relating to ship operations) was used they put CV in there.
But when helicopter were involved they usually drop CV from the carrier designation..An example is USS Boxer..started in WW2 as CV-21..then CVS-21 then ended as LPH-4 when it was converted for Helo only operations.

That may be true..but try to get something in close enough to a CV these days to prove that theory.

My fave so far has been the conversion from Mess Specialist to Culinary Specialist. No matter how you spell it it's still **** on a shingle.

Navy mess must be slipping. We never once had SOS when I was in the CG. Steak and lobster, yes. SOS, no.

Hell rpm, I was on an AFS (Combat Stores). We had first pick of the freshest food. We NEVER had steak or lobster. I take that back, we had "something" that looked like steak but to call it steak would be blasphemy to carnivores everywhere.
