Title: need an upgrade?
Post by: fradim on April 21, 2005, 11:41:52 AM
Hi, guys

I havenŽt been around for more than 2 years. IŽm thinking about comming back so IŽd like to know if my current system might still work with AHII.

ASUS AV8X
Athlon 2600+
512 Mb RAM
Geforce3 ti200

If not what would you suggest? As I live outside USA prices here are much higher so I could not afford a top system. To make comparisons easier I guess I could - if I have to ;-) - spend there around US$ 300-400.

IŽd appreciate any help.

Another 512 MB RAM and a new midrange graphics card would do nicely. Processor is still more than adequate for AH.

If you like the Nvidia cards, go for a 6600GT.  You will bypass the issues the 5xxx series have (although I have learned to live quite happily with mine).  The 6800 is a better performer, and if you can afford it a better choice, but the 6600 is a good step if you are on a budget that prevents the 6800.  If you go ATI, 9800 or x800.

And definitely get the extra RAM.

do you have a ti200 or Ti-4200....

The Ti-4200 is still a pretty decent card for AH...as long as you keep things at default you should be OK. If you check out newegg you have 100+ options in AGP between 100-200 $.

I have a X800 pro and love it...but its overkill for the CPU (IMO). I'd get a 6600 of some flavor with that CPU.

I have a similar system...

A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon 2400+ (not OC'd)
768MB (3x256MB Corsair XMS PC2700)
GF Ti4600 128MB

...and I was wondering if a vid card upgrade would help.  As it is now, I get 60 fps at best, down to 20 fps in a low furball with mid-range detail settings & 2x AA.

I will be putting a whole new machine together probably later this year, but I would be willing to pay for a new vid card now if it would give me another 10 fps (I got 70+ fps in AH1, which is what I'm trying to achieve now).  I got the latest nVidia drivers for the Ti4600.  Would a 6600 be an improvement?

Yes, don't overdo the graphics card or it will be beyond the processor. The X800 Ati's are excellent. Nvidia 6600's will be good too.  X850 and 6800 would be overkill, especially as AGP is slowly going to be phased out.

The only way a graphics card is going to go "beyond the processor" is to turn off the vsync.  Otherwise its not going to go anywhere, it will just make for a lighter load on a faster GPU.  In other words, the entire system pretty much runs at the speed of its slowest component (simplification).
