Title: P-38G-13-LO Miss Virginia
Post by: Widewing on April 22, 2005, 09:16:34 PM
For my first attempt at a skin, I selected a P-38G from the 339th Fighter Squadron of the 347th Fighter Group based at Guadalcanal in April of 1943.

We currently have Rex Barber's P-38G-13-LO, the number 110. This is the default fighter. Rex Barber was the pilot who shot down Yamamoto's Betty. However, he wasn't flying his usual P-38. For the Yamamoto mission, Barber flew the P-38G of Robert Petit.

This is the aircraft I have skinned. I will do some additional weathering and better define panel lines before submitting the skin.

Very nice, WW.

If I might suggest, the leading edge of the wing would look nice if you added a thin line of upper surface green to the leading edge of the lower wings.

Welcome to the jungle!

Final configuration. I was able to find several photos of this fighter which helped me to finalize the skin. I took Oboe's advice and it produced a much nicer leading edge. Weathering was added, including moderate paint wear on wing walkways. I don't think that I weathered the plane excessively. Panel lines were sharpened some, and Dzus fasterners were added to the cowling edges where appropriate.

Very sweet.  This one means alot to me, I served in the 339th
as a radar mech in the early 80s fixing Phantoms.  The 347th
only has a few claims to fame and the Yamamoto mission is
obviously number 1.

The wing also scored the first couple kills over Korea flying
F-82s, but that was our sister squadron the 68th.

Well, I'm sure you guys know that being satisfied is a temporary condition.

I noticed that the tail S/N was too big, so I rescaled it. the nose number was also too large, so that was rescaled as well. Finally, I did a bit more weathering to create a moreuniform appearance and changed the fuel cap outlines to black as was the color on the P-38G-13 series.

This should be the final configuration.... I hope.
