Title: Shoot or dont shoot?
Post by: Elyeh on April 24, 2005, 05:50:21 PM
Thats my question.

Been going to the DA as of late and I have a question.

I notice that most people that fly in here try to actually try to get behind each other before shooting someone down. Alot of the veterns who have helped me out would wait to get behind me b4 blasting me out of the sky.

I was with a differnt group early this morning and engagement rules seemed totally differnt.

After the opening pass, I would start turning with some of these guys and would wind up facing each other again (for what I assumed would be another pass). Instead I would get shot as we just about were ready to pass again. Damn near head on)

I could have just as well shot back but I assumed the idea was to manuver to get behind (or at least have position) on the oppenent.

The more vertern sticks I had practiced with earlier never did this,
they always waited till thet got position.

My question is what is proper ediquitte in the DA?
Shoot any time or wait till you manuever and have position on a plane

Basically, the most common "rule" in the DA is no firing on the initial merge and after that, anything pretty much goes.

There are also two types of pilots, those that use and understand ACM and those that don't.  The ones that understand and use ACM are the ones you described that are able to maneuver to your six position for the kill.  The ones that  don't have the mental agility to understand and comprehend the use of ACM are the ones you described as always maneuvering for the head on shot as their little minds can't grasp the concept of how to manuever their planes to achieve the ideal "angle" for the kill.

problem is when people have the need to be the best, they lower their standards on when to fire. you know a good fight if you are head on after the merge and look at each other down the site for 600 yrds and niether fires.

then you know you have to really work.

some spitfire fights have become so severe its all about possition for second merge shot.

After the merge,if the pilot chooses too take a shot on the next time they meet that is called a deflection shot, not a HO pass.

The DA used to not be like it is now. when 2 pilots argued about thier combat in the MA they brought in the DA.Each opponenet then went too an opposite country and they met in the middle-too settle it once and for all.Of course the DA is for training purposes as well, but now everyone in the DA just has a Free For All.

I normally will hold off on 1st engagement. If they choose to fire on the second HO possibility, then the next time, I will also. Basically, the 1st time I fight someone, I just see their style. The 2nd time, I fly by it.

Normally for me, Guns cold on the first merge. After that, the fight dictates what I wil do.

I very rarely will accept a "HO" situation", and am more
likely to try to get underneath you in that scenario.

That being said, if I am in the right aircraft and you push the HO, I will oblige. But...I don't normally fly to force a HO situation. I find I lose more often than not, and have never learned anything about my abilties, or my opponents from this enaggement style.

there I was and there you go.

The horror, what a radical idea.  If ideas like these ever get out the MA will never be the same.  Silence!

spot on with your assesment on the 2 diff kinds of DA pilots.  When I am in there with a decent stick, like Urchin, or Yucca (insert uber stick name here) it's far more probable that one of us will crash into the ground during a 3min rolling scissor fight 20 feet off the deck at under 100kias.  The head on is never tried for.  Now then, with my squaddies, in there messing around, they seem to take great delight in face shooting me.  Heh.  Really ticks me off and they know it.  (*ahem* WMSharp)

Really depends tho'.  I have gone to the DA with some, and had to specify no face shots.  If you don't want the ho, and you are doing a 1 on 1 duel with somebody, just agree to not face shoot.

(edit)  extreme deflection shots are not ho's.  If only one guy has gun position, it's not a ho.  In that moment before we go nose to nose, if you can pull off a shot, and I do not have gun solution, I consider that acceptable.
