How many of you have seen the add for Aces High on TV?
I see it on the Military Channel.
Some of the filmmakers in the community can do a much better job of promoting and portraying the game on TV then that add does.
(why do I even care about this stuff?)
-
ya..that is there new one..
I agree..Should be better...
Somthn about filmviers giving kind of a "shackie" experince when you see it on TV
one of or fellow flyers makes commercials for a living..I know we coudl put togther a bettr ad..
I wonder if it s a friend of HTCs doing the commercial...
-
the footage is good its the way the voiceover is done thats kinda..lame.
Its just not very enticing. It doesnt grab ya by the short and curlies and say. "hey, check this out"
I'd haveta agree. I think the folks here can do better.
So why dont ya's.
-
The solution is obviously to have a contest with Community made commercials. The best commercial in HiTech's POV wins.
You could say something like, wins a month without having to pay or something.
-
A month, a year subscription would be more like it. Takes a lot time to make a good film. :aok
-
i think stream was making one
-
Say what ya want, but I know since the commercial came out, there has been a major increase of fresh sheep. :)
-
Porn. The commercial needs some hardcore porn.

I was going to try to make one... but I would have to get the okay from HT... I just don't want to put all the time and effort into it and not even have it considered.
But if they want me too, I can do it. All I need is the okay.
-
Yeah I got to agree that marketing has never been HTC's strong points.
The advert that I saw was so bad it looked completely amateur. Same goes for the arcadish flash running on HTC front page.
The adverts give a completely wrong picture of the game which means they do not serve thier purpose.

Yep, it's so terrible that I consider it non work safe, especially with the ridiculously loud and annoying music.
-
commercial is terrible. I have to change the channel when it comes on. Mil chn. on 1/2 the time my tv is, so i've seen it lots, well the 1st 10seconds before I flip channels that is.
Makes the graphics look terrible, and the voice over... GEEEZ it's terrible.
Not sure what is worse, that somebody came up with that dialog, and pitched it, or that somebody said "wow, sounds good, go with that"
"How would YOU like to blah blah blah.... How would YOU like to" etc, etc, over and over again. And the bad part is, it's hard to understand. Like a used car dealer commercial, w/ lots of fast talk.
Sorry coming down so hard, but that is indeed a bad comercial. Would be neat to see what a few members of the community could do. Somebody who reallly loves the game, and it shines through from a player perspective.

I guess Knology doesn't even HAVE the Military channel. Hell... I'd be happy to see ANYTHING.
Woof

I havent seen it once even tho I watch the miltary channel frequently.

LOL that music is pretty bad and annoying might be an understatement. It almost borders offensive.
The page would be much better served with something like. This (http://www.geocities.com/viennaonline/sound/bgsound0501.mid)
Which is at least tolerable to listen to while your reading the page.
While we may be groaning about the adverts and stuff. Gotta say this community is really something special.
How many other products do you know of where the existing customers actually give a damn about how the product is marketed?

Nope it's on all the time. I saw it yesterday around 11:30 am CT. They must have gotten the cut rate advertizing plan....when no one is home or awake...:)
Now I know why most of the noob's are between 10-14. Adults look at the commerical and say to themselves "I wonder why they're putting arcade game commercials on this channel".
The flight model is so much more than what's represented in the commercial. If nothing else they should update it to the modern version including the outstanding explosions and smoke trails when a plane goes boom!
IMHO, if you want a larger audience then take that 15-30 second spot and shoot what the game's flight model really looks like.

what makes the vidoes look crappy is that there shown in F3 mode now if it was in F4 mode it sould look ALOT better
-
I thought to commercial told as much about the game as it could within the 30second's it has to do so.
Ones percpetion on what looks good may differ.
Did it get the job done? Yes. IMO it did.
Was it effective? Yes. I see more and more new players in the game each week.
Did it look good? Some of it did some of it didn't. Much of it has to do with the limitations of the film viewer.
Maybe if Hitech wanted to do another commercial created by the players there could be a contest type of event where the 30 second films would be submited and then voted upon bt the HTC staffers?
Again, its near imposible to show someone who knows nothing about this game everything it has to offer in a 30 second time frame. That being said... I think the current commercial does a good job at this.
-
Actually, this is something that we've been talking about. We've seen a lot of films produced by the community that impress us and we'd love to tap into some of that talent. We're looking at putting together a contest of sorts to see if someone from the community could actually produce a 30 second spot for us to air.
-
-
Ah just read your post pyro...took me a little more than two minutes to type up that whole wall of text.
In that case...it's my commercial idea...MIIIIIIIIIIINE! Muahahaha!
What about teaming up with people...often times it takes more than one person to gather the required film and do all the editing. Allow up to 3 players to team up on a commercial?
-
Yeah, I know, I know. No need to thank me. :D
-
I think one of the biggest challenges will be to compile the movie without violating any copyrights in the process.
We'll need some musical talent at least.

I'm on it.. Just have to give me an idea on copywright laws you don't want me to break... I can do it... I have a ton of ideas..
What format do you want, size of file, and size of viewing screen.
-
Is there a schedule for that commercial? I'd like to see it.
-
That would be good. I have not see the commercial, (no T.V. here) but I have heard it really lacks.
Go for it Stream! :)
-
Are there any links to that commercial anywhere? It would be good to get some ideas what is said in it.

A new person was asking how to get 3rd person in a fighter... like the commercial.
It's weak, can't tell what demographic they're aiming at.

AhComercial (http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/ah2.mpg)
-
Wow, that commercial wasn't bad at all. From what some were saying, I was expecting it to just suck.
The only minor weak spots are some of the outside views maybe, but overall I think it's a pretty good commercial.
-
If is wasnt for the arcadish views and that SUPER LAME AND ANOYING voice, i woulnt think ah needs a new comercial. However, like pyro said, there are a lot of great film makers out there, that can add more to it. Hopefully this will atract more of an audiance older then 14.
I would love to see the comercial show how the game "truely" is.
-
LOL, the "where can YOU... " really got under my skin even during the 1st viewing. The second time I could not listen all the way to the end :)
Actually, I just realized that I cannot even recall too many of the visuals because that voice got all my attention.
-
At least you guys have seen it, we don't get that channel here on campus...is there any place I can download it at?
-
Sigma,
See Rosco's post above.
He placed a link to the commercial there.
-
A good voice over can make or break a good spot. The ones that start out in just black for a few seconds or snow drive me crazy. I actualy have dumped out of spots that start that way and then have the sales person come running in telling me it was supposed to start that way.
So please dont make any like that or you'll have a lot of spots getting dumped right as they start, providing the station actualy has someone there paying attention.
:)
-
I have to do a 30 second tv spot for my video class. id love to try it if you guys want me too.

Thanks for the link...yeah the voice acting is very...average.

sounds interesting...but do i have to abide by FCC regs ? or is T&A allowed ?
-
A really great commercial for Aces high would be to show real life WWII clips showing a b17 being shot down, and then switch to a "film" of the EXACT same thing happening in AH, then back to a WWII gun clip of a 109 being shot down, then back to AH doing the same thing etc....
People (like me) sit and watch hours of these kinds of shows, and seeing 1 for 1 (WWII versus AH) comparisons would get me off my arse to log in and sign up.
JMHO
Anyone capable of putting together a film with interlaced clips ??

Okay, guess I'll wade in here with my thoughts. Does anyone remember the old commercial? It makes the new one look pretty dang good to me. I for one am very happy to see AH being advertised in the first place. I still remember the day I was home with a sick child and saw it on Discovery Wings (RIP DW), I thought it was exciting and was very pleased to see it.
AH had a big influx of players when WB's management went insane. Then another even bigger one when AW went belly up. But I do not think that both of those events combined equal the influx of fresh meat...errr...new players that these television spots bring in.
I only hope that HTC is tracking some demographics from new subscriptions with a simple "how did you hear about us?" radio button. I'll wager that the ones who came here due to the TV ads don;t tend to stay as long as the WB/AW defectors do but the influx of new players is what keeps the game alive and under constant development.
Also, I feel it must be said...I don't think it is constructive to come here and say "that commercial sucks" unless you are willing/able to make a better one yourself or pay a professional to produce one out of your pocket.
I say keep up the advertisements and consider other channels too, albeit for a more targeted programming and lower volume.
-

Doing this is very simple.
The toughest part of the whole deal is getting a scene from Aces High to look similar to the historical footage. I am speaking in terms of the enviorment itself. And even then, its not that tough.
And I agree with you Ed.
So many love to play monday morning quarterback and say how they think things should be done and how good it could have looked or should have looked. When many of them haven't even put a film together with aces high footage... And to have it come out looking somewhat decent.

Well Morpheus the only reason I started this thread was because I had seen what the filmmakers in the community are capable of.
The work I have seen on the BB got me thinking about how bad the commercial is.

My feelings exactly..
And hey, Siskle and Ebert never produced a movie either for that matter

Kingcat made an awesome short film, it's definitely commercial material.

A competition sounds cool too. I am definitely interested.

All righty then,
I have an Idea, as I too have seen the comercial on Discovery Wings, History Channel, and now the Millitary channel. While the current comercial works it could stand some tweaking.
I do not think it would be hard to round up enough willing participants to stage a filming of a large formation of bombers being attacked by fighters, with escourts respectively. Now if this is done by a master cinimographer with maxed out detail and graphics it would look like an authentic peice of footage, which could be intertwined with the game footage. Of course the voiceover would have to change along with a musical interlude.
Just my 2 cents. :aok
-
DaddyAck I had the same thought.
Can't you just picture 5 or 6 flights of B-17's, surrounded by the beautiful new ack burst in a sky red with the sunrise?
Bring in the 190D9's and 109's 110's diving on the buffs lobbing cannon shells at them. B-17 catches fire, another effect done very well in the current version.
Cut to a Panzer and T-34 slugging it out in the new trees. Boom there goes the T-34's turret flying through the air.
I guess the point is that it is apparent HT has put allot of effort into the game.
It is time to advertise that effort.

Wow, that's a great looking film and the sound is awesome.

Default commercial doesnt seem to bad only main problem is the voice over.
Of course if you want to attract an older audience I reccomend more shots of just general formations and flight then of combat.Too much combat makes it looks arcadey,But too little and it looks boring.
-

We were experimenting with the idea that monster-truck-rally/pro-wrestler enthusiasts would also like WW2 flight sims. :)

Lol! This experiment sure does take a long time! What, 4 years now?

Balsy...that interlaced idea....didn't MS Combat Flight Simulator do something that in the opening credits, like on a takeoff or something? I remember watching it for the first time and thinking how cool it was.
I wish I could see the commercial....the only station I get is History Channel and if it's on there then I am not watching at the right times.

Did I direct what I said towards you? Or did you just assume that I did? You know what they say about asaumption.
Nah... It was for the ones who come out and say...
Well that sucks, this sucks, it all sucks, and it should be better... The same people who've never put an AH film together in the first place.
This idea is a good one, and it was mentioned quite a while back, before this new commercial ever came out.
Now that Pyro has shown some interest in a commercial made by a player or players the ball might get rolling and we might see some folks getting into making films for AH.
Its nothing short of a pain in the arse to use the AH film viewer and take clips and scenes, put them together and have them look like the belong together in the finished product.
-
I suppose I did take it a little personally, since I was the one who started this thread.
I appreciate your explanation.
The post was meant to inspire the creative people among us.
Or HT for that matter.
