Oh yeah! Those kind of bloopers are everywhere. Alot of times companies will hire artists based on skill and price, not on their intimate knowledge of the subject. I happen to be a fine artist and scientific illustrator myself, and I turn down a few jobs every year that I don't feel I have the knowledge base to properly execute. In those circumstances I usually point them to someone that specialises in that subject. If they still want me to do the work, I damand at least 2 months for research before I begin the job. most of the time, the company will not wait, and only about 25% of the people I referr for the job actually get the job. They usually get outbid by someone that knows nothing about the subject.
So, in those cases what you are likely to see is the product of an illustrator that just grabbed a pic, copied it in his style and threw it on a background of whatever. It may be completely inaccurate and totally out of context, but it looks good to the company and they don't know the difference anyways. Alot of times the artist just copies someone elses innacurate work and adds a few of their own inaccuracies, creating what I call the Xerox effect.
As for me, I am too much of a perfectionistic bastard to put out some crap just for a few bucks, but some of those illustrations are really good for making those that know better laugh!

Hahaha I especially liked the rocket mid '50 rocket launchers, with german '70's helicopter and german SS troopers with kubelwagen :lol

I always remember the Revell 1/32nd Scale P51B in Don Gentile's markings. The Box art showed him fighting a 109E.
Never quite understood how that happened :)
Good stuff Milo

When I was big into building models I would not buy a kit with box art only. If it had pics of an actual built kit then I would buy it. I turned that talent into a knack for picking out only the finest pron by the box cover.

I hear that! When I was a kid there were alot of models, and alot of crappy ones too. Picking a good one was an artform in itself. Fortunately for me, I knew the shop owners and they would let me look at the parts.
Last year I started making models again, boy was I in for a few surprises.
1. they are not everywhere like they used to be. I used to be able to walk into most hardware stores or drugstores and glean over a wall full.
2. what happened to the REAL skill levels? If people are intimidated by the time it takes, what is the point of buying one?
3. what is with these so called models that are already put together for you? I really don't understand that.
4. All the models that I want, I have to buy online. I really miss being able to pick one from a shelf. The process of buying a model is not just the purchase. Alot of the times that i was speculating a model, other modelers were there, and we could share opinions about them, and maybe pick up a few tips as well.

Does the Betty on the box of Pacific fighters come into this? :)

Picking out a box from the shelves is one of the most beautifull things of the modelling :)
I never could resist, wallet allowing or not...

You ought to see the pile of models stacked up behind me that I haven't touched since I came across Airwarrior in 96. Gotta be 150 kits unbuilt. I keep looking at em, but haven't brought myself to build one again.
A quick glance counts:
8 P38s
14 Spitfires
14 P51s
10 109s
16 F4 Phantoms
7 F16s
and the list goes on and on. These are all 1/48th scale too. Kinda wish I had the money I spent on em back :)

How else are you going to experience flight while strapped into the cockpit of a small plastic model?
-
Be sure to paint the cockpit very well, or you'll get very sick :)

AS for you Guppy35, I have just created an agency that intervenes in cases of model neglect, and will be coming to take possesion of the models that you have admitted to neglecting. This has nothing to do with the fact that they are very cool models, or the fact they are all in 1/48th scale, which coincidentally happens to be the scale that I like the most.
So, for the betterment of mankind, you should hand them over without resistance. This is for the greater good of everyone, besides, I know that the guilt must be eating you alive by now and I feel your pain.
Help me help you, Guppy35

The ProModeler 110G night fighter shows a 110 by a Lancaster with the lanc's outboard port engine flaming. The 110 is flying toward the imaginary camera and the lanc is veering off in the rear away from the camera.
Only... In night fighting you got close. REAL close. And you didn't line up under the lousy outboard engines, you lined up with the belly of the beast. You were so close you couldn't miss the belly and hit the outboard wing 30 feet to the side of where you were aiming. It always irks me when I look at it.

so list 'em and put up for sale on arc/hyperscale... some of those jet weenies will pay near obscene prices... the prop guys seem to be more stingy...
-
Shane, I've seen some prop guys that put jet guys to shame!
The solution is simple... lose MOST of them. Keep maybe 1 of each. Sell the rest. Keeping a few means you don't have to invest any $$$ when you get back into modeling (and you will... it's in your blood now).
I never got into hording or collecting a stash. I can see the appeal, but having too many means you're less likely to build them. I only buy kits I will build. At most I get a handful at a time, wait til they're all done, then wait til I have any $$ then buy a couple more. Currently have 1 nearly done, 2 half done, 1 chopper in progess, and 1 kit in stash. That's a lot for me at 1 time lol.

RAF night bombers used tight turns as a way to evade nachtjaegars if they saw then in time. Unquestiionalby, the box depicts an occasion when the 110 was spotted just before it opened fire
-
"unquestionably"? Bah.. no heavy-laden lancaster is going to pull a tight turn in dark of night. Plus if it turned away and the 110 was still flying "forward" it would have hit the OTHER outboard engine (starboard). I think it's just poor box art.

I keep thinking that when the kids are finally gone and things settle a bit, I'll get back to it. And as any one who has build models knows, there's something about just knowing they are right there if the itch comes back strong for me to build.
I keep looking at the 38s....wonder why :)
One of each, E, F, G, H, J, L, M and F5. That's 6 Headhunter 38s if I ever get off my 6 and get to it :)
I do think of selling them at times, but they're not bugging anyone and it's fun to look at em now and then.

Man, you gotta do one of the 38s
I'm busy, but i'm working on a 38J right now (slowly) but it's coming along. I got most of the parts trimmed and cleaned already. I'm not shure about the paint job, might go Bong, not shure though. I might do a line spec if I really want put some time into it.
Anyways, just pick up the box and open it. See if you can put it down. It's calling for you Guppy35

Have to agree with greenteneral. Start one. Even if it's slow work. I've been working on a Roden 72nd He111E1 for at least 4 months now, and I'm only halfway done. I never used to take this long. But do what you can when you can. Life is life. Just enjoy the breaks you get by modeling lol!
-
I don't doubt that someday I will, But I also started doing profiles on the computer and I NEVER get glue onc tha canopy :)
These are kinda fun too. So far I've done Hurries, Spits, 109Es, P47s, P38s, P51s,P63s, a TBM, B24s, A Lanc, and a B29
