Title: New player/easy kills :)
Post by: wonton on April 26, 2005, 09:51:28 AM
New to the game and just wanted to say 'hi'. I'm very new to online flight sims but not nearly as new to flight sims in general. I've played most of the microsoft suite of sims but only ever versus the computer or the very few of my friends interested in the genre.

I've been trying to get a feel for what the dos and don'ts are from some other welcome threads that I've seen so please let me know if I'm doing something that is generally frowned upon. My handle is the same as in here, 'wonton'. See everyone in the skies.

Welcome to your new addiction.

Thanks everyone, I'm finding this to be addicting right from the get-go. Here I am at work thinking about the fights I had last night. I need a life, hehe.

Learning curve is as steep as you guys are stating. I think I only got one kill and realized he was probably on his way to the ground as it was.

This is soooo much different than playing with 3 friends on a LAN, but I like it :D

Quick question: Are all the planes always available in the main arena? I noticed the combat theater only had certain ones to choose from, which I kind of liked.

You will find fiting , dying and learning a lot more fun than
Booming and Zooming and running back to your base.

Sooo my advice is to remember it's a game that some people are better at than others---go to the DA--or better yet contact the trainers.
The more time you spend engaged the quicker yu learn and in my opinion the more enjoyable it will be.

Welcome Wonton!

Give it a couple weeks...you'll notice big chunks of improvement.
Then you'll bump into someone who'll give you a whoopin that will remotivate you to learn more...and so commences the cycle.

:aok

just so everybody knows, the correct word is 'addictive'
not 'addicting'.   We made the language. my english may not be perfect, but 'addicting' sounds awful.

not picking on anyone wonton :) , just about the thousanth time i've seen it spelt that way.

carry on.

;)

edit: if anyone says anything negative about me, ignore them, they are lying ok. and dont ever listen to anything 'Furball' says, he doesnt even know who hes talking to or what hes saying most of the time.  and definitely pay no attention to 'batfink', he is furball's evil master.

if someone shoots you down get in a plane before you type anything.

our oldest pilot is a lady of 82 years of age, and the youngest certainly below double digits.

the safest chat room on the net. not too many pshycotics play....

Welcome wonton.

If you go to netaces.org (http://www.netaces.org) they have a printable quick reference guide that might aid you getting familer with commands.  Under 'whats new' there are printable maps that show what different objects are on the airfield.  There are also helpful articles.

Speaking of helpful articles, there are also some at the 479th Library (http://479th.jasminemarie.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=20)

I'll add one 'frowned upon' tip.  Dont shoot at planes that someone else has already shot the wing(s) or entire tail off of.  By doing so its possible to take credit away from the one who diabled the plane, which isnt a good way to make new friends.

Thanks again guys. And thanks mudr for the link. LOTS of info there that I was wondering about.  This should keep me busy until I head home and fly :)

I don't think the guy I shot down was missing his wings but he was smoking, I assume he was old enough. But thanks for the heads-up on that one, I'll be sure to refrain in the future.

The best advice I can give it to not let the steep learning curve get you down and cause you to quit. When I came into MMOL flight sims I planned on schooling everyone since I'd beaten every boxed sim ever made. Now, about ten years later I am getting more kills than deaths but doing VERY little schooling...LOL.

There are guys here that have been playing online since the 80s! Stick it out and you'll "get it".

the problem is not so much spelling, as using words that actually exist.

Thanks again for the welcome everyone. As far as what country I fly for, is it a bad thing to change countries to even up the numbers or is it typical to stick to one country all the time?

Been flying in the combat arena a lot lately and having a lot of fun there. It's definitely considered good form in there to even things up but the main arean has so many people I wonder if it matters.

Hi Wonton.  Welcome.

Yes, the CT (combat theater) has a limited planeset that is meant to be historically accurate.  In the MA (main arena) all planes are available all the time, except for perk planes, which you have to save up points to fly.

Evening up numbers in any arena is generally a good idea, but in the MA it usually doesn't matter too much if one person switches sides.  Look for good fights in your country, and if there are none, switch teams.  Or eventually when you find a squad or just a few guys you work well with, stick with that country for a while.

And as for shooting a smoking plane, that's often okay.  Planes can take engine damage, start smoking, and still be dangerous for a few minutes before their engine dies.  Obviously, if the plane is fluttering into the ground don't shoot, but if its still flying and got all of its pieces, shoot away.  :)
