It was a great series, if you didnt see it go buy the dvds. Well worth it.
Hell If you buy it and dont like it I will buy it off you.

It's called Sci-Fi for a reason.
I have had the DVD set for a while and never tire of it. And best of all, it's the first in a series of 3 movies Joss Whedon is doing for Universal (take that Fox you bunch of ******* morons!!!!).

I've seen a couple sci-fi stories where horses make perfect
sense. For example, they are very good low tech "machines"
for transportation as all you have to do is feed them and they
are self-replicating. Alot cheaper than shipping gas and parts
like carburetors over interstellar distances.

But doesn't that kill off the chance of it coming back as a television series? :(

Well, stranger things have happened but, yeah, that pretty much kills it.

Hmmm ...
I think the story was that Whedon went to Sci-Fi to take up the series and they offered a movie deal instead. Not sure about that but that's what I remember. No one knows why Fox aired the series out of order making fans like me scratch their heads about story line interruptions.
-
Holy ****....cool
-
Deal was Whedon got the rights from Fox in exchange for not doing a TV series on it for 10 years.
-
YES!
This was a great series and the movie has all the old characters.. A space western is the very best of both worlds..
what is not to like? anarchy... bad guys to shoot... firearms that go bang (most of em) and women with great butts. Witty writing.
I think that the mix of horses and space ships is perfect for a pioneer universe... sorta like Turkey in the 1800's where "the centuries didn't so much flow, more like, coexisted"
Colinized planets out on the fringe of civilization... yeah.. I might want a high tech (good material) smokeless powder gun and a horse that ate the landscape for fuel. If I had a gee wizz goodie or ten that would be great too.... until it broke and I found out I was out of UPS range.
If you haven't bought the DVD of the series.... do it.

What is the name of the series? This is the first Scifi movie that has looked interesting to me in a long while.
-
oboe...it is "firefly", You can buy the entire season on DVD from Amazon.. believe me... it is entertaining in the extreme.

the womens butts in the series were pretty good to tho.

Btw, I think I saw actual Reavers.
What do you guys think?

yeah I think I saw them too.
Can not wait.

Neither did I, but I believe he's credited at IMDB.

sholtzie... I don't usually judge womens looks but.... fascape women are not even in the same class as firefly women. One of the farscape women looks like a little boy and the other one has a very unfortunate face.
The firefly women have.... curves... like women ya know?
didn't notice if the colored guy was in it or not. He didn't have much of a part in the series tho except to try to figure out who he really was.

Wow, that looks really cool. I only saw a few episodes of the series, but they were good.
The only thing the movie needs is some gay-arse, cuddly, furry puppets. Maybe George Lucas could have improved that aspect :D

Book was an enigma. He may have been working for the Alliance. He may truly be a shepherd. He was the most enigmatic character on the show. Why he isn't in the trailer but is listed as a cast member at iMDB is a glaring clue to me.
And Inara...need I say more?

"Mrs. Reynolds" and "Out Of Gas" were gems. If you see only one see "Out Of Gas". It will explain alot about the series all in one epi.

I always thought the mechanic was the best, they are all fine though.
The mechanic reminds me of Paula prentice, who was hot in her day!

A friend of mine had a theory that in the third season we would have found out that Book was the Allience General in charge of the battle of Serenity Valley...which would have totally rocked!

Absolutely the best TV series I never saw, never heard of or never dismissed out of hand.
I got intrigued when the folks on here one and all gave it 3 thumbs up and bought the DVD set. After watching it twice I loaned out the first DVD (and wouldn't loan them the others:D) to a few people at work. Now all but the truly cheapskates own it themselves.
There are some retards at Fox forsure!

I didn't know that there were so many folks out there who trusted and used Quicktime.

jeez this thread has been turned into a skank fest or a tranny pic thread!! (is the dark haired one really a man?)
Never seen farscape, nor will I now that you have posted the "eating disorder" pics.
How old is that dark haired one? like 50?
-
No. just not in to skin and bones/eating disorder type women with un atractive faces.
-
Can't tell from that shot, if she is or isnt and it is a better shot, she is ok, but has nothing on any of the chicks from Firefly.
-
Inara is way hotter. Although not as hot as LtCol. Sarah McKenzie.
-
is it all out on DVD?
Since I have watched Magnum PI season 2, two times now I think I need another show.
lol
It's not like Startrek were they rip you off at over 100 bucks a season I hope! lol

For some reason, wich I can't figure out, she really does it for me. Maybe it's the lips?

My best mates younger sister looks just like her, the resemblance is really uncanny. The only difference is that Sharon (my mates sister) has longer hair.

well.... it is a rare day that I throw any woman out of bed and the women on farscape beat a lot of the women I have ended up spending time with but...
they are not in the same class as the womanly women in firefly. Plus... they are either some strange color or skin tempreture or they are anorexic and weird colored or just plain homely. farscape is simply.... another tv show with puppets and aliens.
The stories in farscape are stupid. the puppets are stupid and all the silly blue people and lizard people and whatever are dumb tricks to hide plot flaws.
There are so many less quaotable lines or scenes in farscape than in firefly that it is insane.
and... the guns in farscape make no sense.... they are less useful than a black powder blunderbus and more complicated than a supercomputer.
Nothing in the series makes sense so they just say.."well... things work different here".
farscape is a firefly for poor gay people.

sholtzie... didn't see those things in the war scenes but.. if you were on a planet with very spotty (or no) parts delivery or spotty ammo quality and very dirty economicaly depressed area..
What gun and vehicle would you choose? A semi auto? You do want a repeater right? A lever gun is easy to repair and couldn't care less about ammo quality and is not that fussy about dirt.
even today... a single action revolver is the very fastest gun you can own for getting from the holster to that fairly important first shot... A horse gets you around the small place and uses the landscape for fuel.
farscape... they use guns that shoot fireballs that seem to have no recopgnizable trajectory. you can allmost dodge the hi tech rounds (and they often do) The rounds leave black marks on organic spaceships when they hit. Anything strange is simply explained as .. well... that's the way people from that planet are/do things/have the ability.
firefly has no aliens... Humans are complex enough.

I agree with Lazs yet again.
That seems to be happening far too often lately.

GScholz, the planets that they visit are on the periphery of civilisation. Think of planet's societies as kind of like cargo cults and it makes perfect sense.
-
Wow, I'm surprised no one had picked up on this.
Those weren't really guns. They were laser guns. There are many laser guns (in the Firefly universe) that were designed and built as such. However, most of the guns are the antique guns (the ones we actually have now) that have been updated to be laser guns.
I.E. Mal's gun is a straight laser gun, while his lever action is an updated gun.
Btw, I'd be willing to bet that Book was an admiral for the Federation, but not as far as saying he was at serenity valley.

What does Africa have to do with cargo cults?
-
Nothing, but it does have a lot to do with "on the periphery of civilisation".
So, I'm talking about a specific case of a society (or class of societies "cargo cults") that are on the periphery of civilisation. You then over generalise about a different case of a society on the periphery of civilisation.

jeez guys its show!!
You know fantasy?
Besides, the modern ray gun makers were just making modern ray guns that look old school.
Its just one of those fads!
you know like bell bottoms coming back?

Slimm50, where are you with my quote? It is applicable.

Since when is a comparison a fallacy? I know, since never.
It is completely IDIOTIC since a good modern ray gun would COST LESS and be MORE AVAILABLE than pre-historic antiquities like lever action rifles and revolvers.
But you would have to have the either infrstructure to build them domestically, which these outer planets obviously don't, or the werewithall to transport them in. And it just isn't worth it cost/benefitswise to ship them out, to these outter planets with there low demand (small populations). Something that comes across in the series is the almost prohibitive cost of spaceship fuel. And of course there is the risk of running into pirates or Reavers.

Did anyone even bother reading what I wrote about the guns?

No.
PS: I imagine it would cost alot more to try and covert a current day firearm to be a laser weapon than just buying a laser weapon.

Like I said even in Africa they don't use ancient weapons like that. It would cost them more than a good assault-rifle.
They used a great deal of older weapons before our pals in
the USSR started giving away AKs. Plus I imagine airtravel on
earth a bit faster relatively than space travel.
-
Well, had you paid any attention, you would have caught how much the new laser guns cost. So it obviously doesn't cost more to convert them.
Btw, Mal says the alliance doesn't know what's coming.
Do you think he means a Reaver Invasion?
-
Okay, on the gun stuff:
Yeah, there are laser guns in firefly. And there are super-techno non-lethal force guns. And if you watch, you'll see that the laser guns are like my cellphone: lots of cool features that impress everyone until the battery dies, which it does rather soon. Likewise, the non-lethal force guns used by the cops are big crappy pieces of plastic that exhibit marginally superior performance when the butt rather than the muzzle is applied to the victim's head.
So yeah, gunpowder isn't going anywhere. We've got a simple chemical reaction that reliably produces a projectile moving at its target faster that the target can react. Unless you've got something cheaper, why not?
Sure, it's a TV show, and a lot of the crap is gonna be from the past or present with the hope that nobody notices. If you watch the late 70's "Buck Rogers", you'll see the Commodore PET being used at as a communications device. Contrary to what you may think, it ain't a show for gun nuts; after all, A gussied-up AK like Vera wouldn't need O2 to work.

dinger pegged it... the gee wizz weapons are severly restricted by the government and they are seen but only in the hands of the most wealthy and are illegal... they also don't seem to be any more leathal or useful than a good lever gun that is easy to maintain and make ammo/parts for.
now... all the old weapons in the series are modified or modernized versions of old classics. They are much better than what we have now. In one episode they show both a laser gun and anti grav buggy and the modernized projectile weapons along with... two genuine antique weapons... one is a SW revolver and the other is a PPK both engraved and boxed and curios.
I would rather have one of these upgraded weapons than the silly farscape hi tech guns that seem to shoot roman candle like balls of somethimes leathal sometimes not whatevers that travel at dodgeball speeds.
Places like afganistan still had flintlock weapons in the late twenmtieth century untill a veritable flood of cheap russian and American full autos were dumped there by two governments.

Ok.. so we all agree? sholtzie is a commie puppet fan who wouldn't know good sci fi if it bit him on the butt.
and... he likes his women to have boys bodies..
lazs
-
I meant the blue one. If the camera adds 10 pounds she must weigh about 80 lbs.
really... you need to look at the women in firefly.
but.. Like I said.. I am not that fussy.. I would probly not kick any of the ones even in farscape out of bed.
I just think puppets and blue people and lizard folk are kinda lame.
What was the other sci fi show that was on about the same time as the puppet one but came on late at night? The one with the ship that looked like a big bug and could destroy a whole planet? that was a fun one.
lazs
-
you know lazs, that one of the conditions for Jewel Staite to play "Kaylee" was that she gain 20 pounds so that she would "look like a woman who enjoyed a cheeseburger from time to time".
Were there monkeys?
-
the 20 pounds looks really good on here... I would buy her a cheeseburger any day.
what was the name of that other sci fi sho that was on TV and got cancelled? It was pretty funny and sexy I thought.
lazs
-
flipping thru the channels, i've seen it a few times, looked kinda cheesy and B-rated.
maybe i'll watch a whole episode now.

buy or borrow the DVD. I can't watch anything on TV the damn commercials just kill it.
