I'd say Waylon Jennings "Dukes of Hazard" song was one of the best......plus he narrated the series. Just a good song all around.
Others: The "Cheers" song was very good, The Partrige family song was good. The "Friends" song was well known, but sucked.
Anyone have others?
The Happy Days song too. ( it was a song way before Happy Days)

One of my very favorite theme songs would have to be the one for "Welcome back Cotter" written by John Sabatian of The Lovin Spoonful.
Another was the theme song to The Fat Albert Show, and if you don't like it.......Bills gonna teach you a thing or 2!
Favorite soundtrack: the one for "Bladerunner" by Vangelis
another soundtrack: the one for "Superfly" by Curtiss Mayfield

I also liked:
Thunderbirds
The Avengers
Battlestar Galactica
Streethawk (Tangerine Dream!)
Airwolf
The Sweeney

There's a lot of good ones - Rockford Files, Streets of San Fransisco, Mod Squad.
Gotta give Hawaii 5-0 the nod though. Seems clearly head and shoulders above the rest.

actually, I thought Lazs would like the Patrick Macnee/Diana Rigg Avengers theme - there's a gunshot in it - as she shoots the cork off a champagne bottle. But then again, maybe he frowns upon the champagne drinking elite.

Going back aways, but the best television theme song of all time is Rawhide.
-
I know this will sound like strike two to some of you, but I'm not kidding this time.
The theme song to American Idol is catchy.
I'm not saying it's the best, just that it's very catchy.
I'm thinking that the six megabuck man, Greatest American Hero, Dora the Explorer, and the revised theme song they used in the last couple seasons of Deep Space Nine are pretty darn good.
Oh yeah, and a second on Rawhide.
-
Firefly
Simon and Simon.
Ones I do not like?
Hill street blues and Mash, both give me the creeps.
-
Nightrider.. I mean seriously

You guys are picking songs that were adopted by TV shows, not songs that were written for TV shows.
The "Rawhide" theme was written for that specific show and is, without question, the most exciting TV song ever written.
It was the Old West...complete with rustlers, steers and Indians, brought to us weekly during prime time, in black and white.
It even had Clint Eastwood, for Chris' sakes. It was the perfect show.

That's a great one.....written By Andy Griffith himself too.
One sign of a great hook in a song is that it can easily be whistled.

LOL had an African Grey Parrot and taught him that.
If you ever get a parrot dont ever teach him that, or any other song.
Oh its cool, the first thousand times or so.
Its after 30-40,000 times that it starts to grate on you

No it wasn't
"The Fishin' Hole" by Everett Sloane, Earle Hagen and Herbert Spencer
Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.
What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.
Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.
What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.
If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.
Hangin' around, takin' our ease, watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.
Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
