Someone call the DOCTOR!!!!!
I cant get my hard on to go down!!!!!!
Well gents,
Last week was hectic to say the least but one for the memory warehouse.
I got to Ocala last Wednesday, and there she was sitting in the back of this hanger at Leeward fly in community.
With only 211 hours on it since 92, she really looked awesome! I spent the next two days agonizing over every detail, weighing out every aspect trying to find a reason not to buy it. Thank God I couldn't find one!
We got it back together Thursday afternoon and around 4:30 took it up for a test flight. At that point my wood started to get excited .
We took off, flew into the box and started to do some basic manuevers. 98R responded crisply to every command. Now it was time for the real test, Vertical Penetration. I weigh in at about 260lbs, Kevin is around 220, so little 98R had it's work cut out.
We dove down to about 190MPH and leveled off at 1700 ft, pulled into a 5g vertical upline and climbed to 3000 ft. The vertical penetration was awsome with the two fat boys riding along. I did a hammer head and we brought her in to land.
After trying to negotiate the final price all day long, with no luck I may add, as we taxied back I told Kevin, get his final price and I'll pay it, end of story.
Friday...
Not having more than 7 hours pitts time I still can't fly her solo. So I arranged for the guys at Emery, whom I flew with in March, to come up and fly me back to Spruce Creek Daytona FLA. Greg and another guy, Jamie, flew up in their Pitts. I drove my rental car to Ocala Intntl, while Jamie dropped off Greg to pick up 98R.
Departing Ocala Intntl...
Run Up.
Taking off in formation, Jamie takes the runway left side and we take the right side. Up comes the power and we are rolling.
Gregg pulls in nice and tight on Jamie's wing. Now I have to tell you I was just a bit nervous as well as siked!! Greg gives me a quick brief and then says, "Your Plane". I take the controls and I am holding a nice tight 45 off the other pitts. Thank you Aces High. After all the formation flying online, flying formation in real life was a breeze!!!

Now it was time to have some fun. First Jamie rolls inverted and we creep up under him mirror image. Then he rolls level and we roll inverted and try to creep into formation. Then Jamie and Greg fly a little 1 vs 1 combat. (http://www.furballunderground.com/blueknights_pictures/userfiles/mars01/Formation%20in%2098R/MirrorImg-small.JPG)
View through the floor.
Then we are over Spruce Creek, Jamie calls, "Spruce Creek traffic, Pitts, formation of two will over fly mid field and entering a left downwind 5." As we enter the midfield Jamie breaks to enter the down wind and we follow a few seconds later nicely spaced for landing.
We spent Saturday wringing her out before the flight up the east coast back to Danbury Sunday morning.
To Be Continued...
BTW - If any of you guys find yourselves in Danbury and it's a nice day, let me know. We'll go have some fun, Pitts style!! :D

Congrats Mate,,that's a sweet looking Pitts :)
-
Turning green here.
One word for that ride----> sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet ttttttt!
-
LOL,
Thanks guys. It is a two seater for a reason and my offer stands, you find yourselves in CT look me up!!!
Single hole Pitts can run anywhere from 12k to 50k depending on the type, condition and extras.
The two hole versions "S2A" 200 HP run anywhere from 45k to 70k, "S2B" 260 HP run 65k to 90k and the "S2C" latest model are 140k to 200k - 98R is a B model, I figured with my big arse the 260 was the only way I'll have a chance at the competitions and some decent performance.
Yeah I'm plane poor now, but life rich hahaha. Just pray for some sever clear so I can finish up the check out and solo this baby.

That is an awesome ride!! Why don't you fly that thing to Colorado when I get back. You can pay a visit to Bodhi and me out here. I've got a spare room at the house if you need a place to stay - but you're gonna have to leave the woody behind, I can't have you showin up at the front door with that thing:D

What's insurance like?
The Avemco folks wouldnt touch my BD-5. The sales rep told me Id have better luck if I told them i had a new cannon and helmet :p
-
Thanks again guys.
Hey Alpha.
Hey HiTech,
I own a 152 I bought to get my license. There were about 5 of us that were supposed to get our PPLs. So I figured by the time we all did it we would have bought the 152 twice. I lease it back and it just about breaks even. It taught me the lesson, "If you want to fly get your PPL. If you want to own you better get your A&P." lolh. One of my eventual goals. :D I did all the 100hrs on the 152 the first two years, that included a few jugs as well. It has been a great experience.
98R is my second adventure into ownership, I just hope the software market doesn't go totally soft lolh or I'm in deep cheese. :D
Hey Slimm,
The flight back was awesome, to say the least. Knowing the weather was going to marginal in some places we wanted to get an early start. So we got to the hanger at Spruce Creek before sun rise. We rolled the plane out under one of the hanger lights as the sun started to come up. By the time we started the engine the sun was breaking through.
We took off at 6:40 on a cool, FLA, Sunday morning, a light haze quickly burning off with every passing minute. It was nice and clear so we made our way at 5500 ft, with a sleight westerly wind.
We made our way up to Brunswick/Golden Isles Georgia in about an hour and a half. The winds were out of the west and pretty much down the active runway, so I took the first landing and got her down with about a 10 to 12 knt headwind. We stopped there for 19 gals.
Our next leg took us to Grand Strands North Carolina. That was another hour and a half and 20 gals. Half way to Grand Strands the clouds were starting to form a broken layer at about 4500 so with the short legs of 98R we decided to go under the clouds at about 3k. As some can imagine it was a bit bumpy, but made the ride all the more fun. The winds were blowing down the runway at 17 mph gusting to 20 so I decided to let Ron take it in, as he would do the rest of the way due to the heavy gusts.
Our third stop was Suffolk Virgina. At this point we were 2k feet picking our way through spaced out rain cells and a ominous looking overcast around Kingston Regional. Again it was about an hour and a half and 20 gals. Suffolk was a few miles south of Norfolk VA so as soon as we got up, we contacted Norfolk Approach and transitioned the area. It was cool flying over the bay. Seeing the ships and carriers at the docs. The overcast turned to a broken layer and the sun was starting to break through. A welcomed warming.
We made our way up the north east coast, over the Delaware seashore. As Cape May, NJ came into sight we knew we were homeward bound. Over Atlantic City to Toms River NJ. Our last fuel stop and winds gusting up to 26 mph.
After fueling up and taking off we could see the mouth of NY Harbor off in the distance. As we neared the Verenzano, we tried to contact NY approach, but they would not respond. Too busy for a Pitts I guess. LOL. With a ***** Yankees game going on the VFR Hudson River Corridor was closed so my home coming past the Lady and up the west side was lost. Our route home would be the 300 feet off the water a 1/4 of a mile off of Atlantic and Long Beach. Only a few miles south of JFK. You could see the heavies lined up an inbound as we passed under the final approach for JFK. The southern route takes you east to the Jones Beach memorial, a left turn North, a transition just outside of Republic airfield, a short hop across the Long Island Sound, due north strait into Danbury.
It was a total of 4 fuel stops, 6.7 hours on the tach and 8.5 total hours in route.
Definitely a trip not to be forgotten!!
Hey LePaul,
I lucked out with the insurance, lets just say it's under 5k, with high deductibles and 90k hull. :D. I dont want to jinx myself.
98R at Danbury after we taxied home.
