I just let Windows Update install a new driver for my ATI 9600 card.
Now AH won't run. I get the "aceshigh.exe has encountered a problem..." message.
Probably not a coincidence. So, what do I do to fix it?
Thanks for the help.

Not being a really patient person, I deleted the video8.cfg file in settings.
Still get the error message.

Windows Media Player got messed up, too.
Went into Device Manager and uninstalled anything called ATI in Sound Controllers.
It all works now.

i also installed new ATI drivers and it messed up my colors in AH, also some guages were missing.
reset to the old drivers , ok now.

i had that prob with 9600 initially tweaking it, i'll try and put some greymatter to work and recall how i overcame it but its been 2 years almost...

the newest ati drivers are shall we say "optimized" for the x-series cards....they don't go with my 9600xt either...think the one i'm running now is 4.12 and it runs flawless

I run ATI X800 card and the new patch has my machine on it's knees !
dosen't matter what drivers I try to use , frame rates in cellar and other blue pin lines on top and left side my monitor as soon as I start fighting .....
before this patch I had high frames and game ran smooth as always ...........
Not now
FX 55 AMD 64-Bit
ATI X800 256 ddr3
1 gig DDR ram
soundblaster performance set at Std.
MSI mainboard Nvidia chip on mainboard ( no via)
160 MB HD
5oo watt pwr supply ....
game set at 512 ....load in memory ...yada yada ...yada .... :(

it may be your GART driver...a friend of mine lost his with his x800 and it shut off fast writes and most important, turned his AGP all the down...had the same performance problem you have untill i re-installed it for him

never use winupdate drivers for ATI or Nvidia....
always best to get them direct from ati

i agree i always go to ati to get my drivers
ati (http://www.ati.com)

Yup....I'd agree its your gart drivers....its a seperate driver install on the X800's. When I put mine in it just crawled...(X800pro)....one way to check is look at what your AGP is reporting in bios or with 3rd party utility...if its not showing 8x AGP that would explain your problem...and confirm Gart drivers are pooched...

or just look in your display properties under the smartgart tab
