knew a guy that flew with a projector like that.  He had a littly alcove thingy in his bedroom with a slight curve.  Wall was painted white.  He'd drag this overstuffed barkolounger over to the alcove entrance, moved his computer nearyby, and flew with the game projected on the curved wall.

INCREDIBLE.  At the time I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen re. a game.  Because of the curve, it really felt like you were IN the game.

(sigh)  can only imagine what a newer projector would be like.  Them suckers can cost 3-4grand easy. (decent ones)

What's the resolution of the projector? I tried one about 4 years ago but it was 640X480 and a plane at 4k looked like a BIG pixel iso a plane. I gave it up at that point but I heaer the 1024X projectors are much better.

i had the res set @ 1024 and it was pretty awesome.   very crisp and illuminated...when i had my white desktop on the screen it was like daylight in the room,

oddly, the strangest most realistic part was landing, i had my first real sense of "vertigo" in a long time while flying.

unfortunately, my FR was choppy and i dont know if it was the projector or the new patch...(it was downloading skins and i have noticed hiccups when it had done so previously)

i'm going to try to correct for it tonight and see how it goes.

way cool.

next step would have to be VR.

I have the Panasonic PT-AE700 which gives a 1280x720 resolution. About 1000 ansi-lumen and 2000:1 contrast ratio.

http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/home_av/projectors/0,39037574,39084602p,00.htm

Cost is around $2k. Flying on a huge screen gives you a completely different feeling.

Only problem is you need a darkened room for best image quality.

Is the darkening of the room due to the 1000 ansi-lumen? I'm just beginning to look at projectors. I have a 61" Tosihiba that was I thinking about moving into the bedroom. That gives me a good excuse to upgrade to a projector.

It sounds like the 1280-720 res and the high contrast ratio provides a real nice HD picture. Since that is the wave of the future I suppose its time to get on with it. Besides I can probably park it up stairs in my computer room for few months before sticking it into my movie room :).

I wonder what the minimum res is needed to get a great 10 ft picture on my wall for flying? :) This is thinking out loud as I just may want to pick up and second one for my computer....

My original thought was to go to the Tracker Ir3 Pro and get a pair of 3d goggles so I don't have to look at the screen. It sure is a pity that the goggles came out too soon...then disappeared off the market before the trackers came out. I was thinking if you married the two then you'd have the perfect setup as the 2 inch screens in the goggles are supposed to give you the equivilent of of a 10 ft screen.

Ideas?

Thanks,

As projectors can't project black the darkest level of 'black' is actually the white or grey projecting surface. This means that in order to get a truly black contrast spot you need a dark room.

1000 ansi is enough to view computer graphics in a normally lit office room (which is its main use atm.) but for movies or serious gaming you need to darken to get enough contrast.

You can always go for higher lumens but it's a tradeoff really. Too much lumens will have a negative effect on the image if you plan to use the projector in your home cinema.

Due to the characteristics of projecting it's always necessary to have some darkening in order to get a dark (black) surface for contrast.

For a 10ft picture I'd say you need a minimum of 1024x768, preferably even more. Forget the vga projectors that can't project a native 1024x768 minimum. They have little use with the computer even though they work relatively better in home cinema.

Hmmmm, it sounds lilke you've already done a lot of research. For gaming what would you suggest as the min res, max lumens. Also, contrast ratio appears to play a big role since the projector doesnt "do" black well.

If I go this route I'm also thinking more about screens. It would seem a slightly curved screen will provide better light at the edges along with more accurate picture quality.

Thanks again.

There's no single answer to that ren. If your main scope of use would be home cinema I could recommend the Panasonic like mine. It has a great value for money.

For data use its smoothscreen system proved to be a bit annoying. It's purpose is to get rid of the pixel net typical to lcd's and large pictures.

Today there are many good choices competing with the Panasonic. I've seen brilliant image qualities from DLP based projectors but some people have a problem with the image.

They see a rainbow effect in the picture when they move thier eyes, this is because of the color wheel / shutter technology used in DLP.

If you'll be using the projector for games only I'd recommend a high lumen projector. Expect to pay upwards of $4000 for XGA or UXGA projector with 1000+ rate brightness.

The PT-AE700 gives an awful lot of bang for buck and versatility in use which is why I chose it.

Other labels you might want to check are Sanyo PLV-Z3, Infocus screenplay 5000 or the Sony VPL series (50ish).

Of course if you can afford to pay more your selection grows much much larger. What's your price point?

Price? I figured since it was going to be a home theatre upgrade i was thinking around $3500 unless there was something that I couldnt live without....
There appears to be alot of 1500/1600 lumen 1024X projectors out there in the $1k to $1.5k range but I dont think they'd be too good for flying and I didn't see alot of details concerning contrast as such. Im pretty sure there is a big difference between turning on your laptop, no matter what its res and doing a powerpoint presentation and watching HDTV through a projector.
