Title: Skuzzy, explain this unexpected boost.
Post by: Widewing on April 29, 2005, 08:30:42 PM
I finally have a broadband connection (Optimum Online). It's nice to download a 5 meg file in 6 seconds...

Anyway, I am running 1024 graphics in the game. I was getting decent, if not great frame rates. My FPS varied from 80 down to 25 fps in furballs.

So, I decided to try the latest Catalyst drivers (5.4) for my 9600XT card. Well, I saw no improvement in frame rate. That was yesterday.

Today I downloaded and installed SP2. When I logged in earlier this evening, I was shocked that my frame rate never dipped below 67 FPS, even in huge furballs with lots of smoke.

So, is there something in SP2 that makes nice with the 9600XT card or the new drivers?

My regards,

Widewing

It is possible you had a DLL in the system which got stomped by some spyware or malware which SP2 corrected.

Natively, I do not see how SP2 would, in of itself, make any difference.

I think I have figured it out. Windows' firewall was on and was apprarently blocking some data. A window popped up stating such. I selected "unblock" and started AH2 again. Frame rate had dropped some, worst case was 47 fps.

I do run Ad-aware and CW Shredder on a weekly basis to keep the garbage under control.
