Skuzzy which Nvidia geforce driver, for the fx series, should we be using? Are the newer ones better than the older for AH?thanks
-
I'm runnin the nvidea 56.64 drivers and my 5200 ultra doin fine.
Almost afraid to run the 71.76 drivers, been wondering if it would make much difference.
-
61.77 is best for FX or lower cards. For 6XXX series use the latest drivers.
-
Like dogg said. 61.77 for FX5xxx cards and older. For FX6xxx cards, use the latest. Be careful though. NVidia introduced a severe bug in a couple of recent drivers which will cause your video card to run about 15 to 20 degrees (C) hotter than it did before and once installed, there appears to be no way to clear the problem.

I can verify using the 61.77 drivers on the FX5xxx cards. Skuzzy suggested that for my rig and it has worked like a charm. I can also verify the strange heat issue. When i first installed the card and ran it for a while my temps were in the 45 to 50 range. Ever since about 67.x something (I think) I run 57 or higher. I think to only way to correct it is going to be to reload the whole OS.
-
It does not appear a re-install of the operating system will cure it either. Apparently (and I am speculating a bit) the drivers store some information on the video card in non-volatile memory which is causing the heat issue.
-
Think I'll stick with the 56.64's.......
-
The 61.77's are safe Deth and preferred as well, but if you are not having any issues, then stick with what you got.
-
Deth7, I used the 61.77 drivers for my FX5700 before I got my new card.

Scuzzy, have they ever fixed this? I just installed a 6600GT about 1 week ago and installed the latest released drivers that day. Card tuns fine
I am about to replace the mobo & processor with w/ a 3.2Ghz Intel. I bought a good heatsink/fan for it and my case has good cooling. But I'm concerned about this.
No way to kill/reload the NVram on the card eh?
-
I beleive the last two releases do not have this problem.
-
On the nvidia site it has 61.76 not seeing 61.77
-
61.76 is the Win98 driver. 61.77 is the WinXP driver.
-
Thanks I have it downloaded already then.
-
where can I getb
this my frame rate locks up big time I have the 5200 fx ultra card
-
Win XP
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77.html
Win 98
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_61.76.html
-
Man works great now Thanks to all of you guys
-
68KO you notice a big difference from the drivers you were using
compared to the 61.76 drivers?
I run the 5200 ultra also.
-
when i downloaded the newest drivers, the screen locks up for like 10-15 seconds, tried before the patches and after to see if it changes, but still a lockup..lost a jet right off the runway to it, sometimes aces high will just have an error after the screen freezes, so i just run on the older driver with no problems (card is a fx5200)

Now, I got the drivers what's the proper proceedure to totally clean the prior drivers from your system before installing new ones?
Might this not be a good sticky thread/faq for Radeon/Nvidia drivers?

Go to the control panel, Add Remove Software. Find your drivers (Nvidia or ATI) and remove them. After the uninstall, reboot. Your computer will start up, and there wont be a driver for your video card. It will automatically search and find a generic VGA Compatible. Let that install. This is the tricky part.
If you had Nvidia before, and are staying Nvidia, all I would do is run a cleaner utility to mop up anything the uninstaller missed. I recommend this one
http://driverheaven.net/cleaner/
Some recommend going as far as searching your Windows folders for remaining files and cleaning the registry too. I think thats excessive, although registry cleaning isnt a bad idea to keep stuff from cropping up. Its most important to clean up the old files if you are going BACKWARDS in drivers, or if you are getting away from a driver that caused serious issues. If you DO want to clean your registry up, this is a good free tool

I use both this one and Registry Mechanic from PCTools. But that one aint free.
After making sure all traces of the old drivers are gone, reboot again just to be safe. Now install your new drivers.
If you had ATI before, and are staying ATI, use the same procedure.
If you are SWITCHING from ATI to Nvidia, or vise versa, there are more considerations.
Nvidia is becoming well known for their motherboard chipsets these days. The nForce boards have a well deserved reputation for quality, but it makes the driver issues more confusing when you also have an Nvidia video card. If you have one of these boards, and use an Nvidia video card, you will have nForce drivers, and Forceware drivers. Its easy to get things confused. The uninstall utility will generally give you the choice of what to uninstall, but you cant be sure. In this case, I make sure I have the newest nForce drivers downloaded from Nvidia and then I uninstall EVERYTHING that has to do with Nvidia. Then go through the procedures outlined above. Then in addition to the new video drivers, you install the new nForce drivers for your motherboard at the same time.
After all this is done, I generally do a reinstall of Direct X as well, as it can get corrupted during repeated installs and uninstalls of drivers. This makes sure your Direct X install is pointing to the right drivers in the right places. Run the tests and save a copy of the Diagnostic report, just in case. Assuming all tests pass, I go through and set my video settings, then I find the video settings folder in the AH folder and delete it. Start up AH, let the video card be detected, and set my video settings up ingame. Log in and try it out, tweak from there.

Greetings :)
I've a GeForce FX5200 - 128 MB, I've downloaded the latest version 76.50, my graphics are clear & sharp, my FPS 50-83, flying
over the ocean FPS reaches up to 100.
Download was approx. end of 03/2005 or early 04/2005, I've had
NO problems whatsoever, no blue screen, lines or discoes :)
Hope this helps.
Happy1 :D

Congratulations. You are one of the lucky ones. :) It could be that the newest driver fixed the problems, but until some testing can be done I'll not advise anyone to use them. Perhaps I will spend part of this weekend trying the latest drivers to see what happens.
Thanks!
