A guy made enough vague predictions that you can pull a few out and stretch them to fit in a general sense some modern events.
Nothing but your local palm reader on a larger scale.

Not to mention that all his predictions are in a weird dialect of latin that is open to a huge amount of interpretation.

I agree, in fact I remember this particular quatrain was specifically mentioned in a Tv special a few years ago and the intreptation then was he meant nuclear war or nuclear bomb detonated in New York city.

But since historical language experts cannot agree on the context of his writings, I don't think much attention should be paid to some circular email.

Doing a little search I found two paragraphs that resembles those, but either the translation has been very open for translation and/or some serious "adjustment" has been done.
I don't know if THESE translations are correct, but they were taken from a page last updated January 9, 2001, which has nothing to do with this disaster.
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees latitude,
Fire approaches the great new city
Immediately a huge, scattered flame leaps up
When they want to have verification from the Normans
[...]
Earthshaking fire from the center of the Earth
Will cause the towers around the New City to shake
Two great rocks will war for a long time,
And then Arethusa shall color a new river red.
Which more sounds like a prophecy of some sort of combined earthquake/vulcanic eruption to me.
Wasn't there also some prohesies fabricated for when G.W.Bush was elected?

I have received this hoax email from three people today that always forward me this hoax crap.
If someone tries to send this hoax to you, refer them to the following link and tell them to stop wasting bandwidth.

It is hard to understand why some people are using such a tragic event to spread more fear using the name of Nostradamus but unfortunately that is the case.
By the way, Nostradamus died in 1566 so anything with "Nostradamus 1654" should give you a clue.
So, for your information, the following variations are also hoaxes attributed to Nostradamus:
The one starting with "New century and 9 months",
The one starting with "9 months and eleven days" or "On eleventh day of 9th month",
The one which mentions "two steel birds",
The one which mixes 2 completely unrelated quatrains of Nostradamus "From the sky will come a great King of Terror...The sky will burn at forty-five degrees" in order to fit the event. Also, don't forget that NY is not at 45 degrees but a little south of 41 degrees.
More will be added as encountered...

The following quatrain has been circulating the Internet after the WTC bombings.
In the City of God there will be a great thunder,
two brothers torn apart by chaos,
while the fortress endures, the great leader will sucumb.
The third big war will begin when the big city is burning.

Interesting thought. AMC and Turner Classic Movie channel have shown short movie clips from WWII. They were about Nostradamus and his writing, proving that we would win the war. I believed the Germans also used his predictions.
It's possible that the terrorist knew about his prediction and used his writing as a reason for the timing of the attacks. Would be good psychological warfare from their point of view.

Uh oh, Salem & Keizer, Oregon are on the 45th parallel. And Cornell, Wisconsin is right there too! Certainly all places that come to mind when you think global events...hell, Keizer (http://www.keizer.org) is the "Iris captial of the WORLD"!

As a French and latin speaker I've tried on my own to translate Nostradamus like lot of people...
I'm sure of one thing : it's rubbish pure toejam and you can do what you want with his writings.
In a word : Unreadable.
