Did ya hear about the guy awarded $3 billion from the J R Renoylds group because he had lung cancer from smoking.
OUCH!!

ricockulous :(

yep, retarded. Wonder who gets the most the dumb arse smoker or his lawyers??? Did you read the jurors comments on why such a high settlement? http://sns.chicagotribune.com/business/nationworld/sns-tobacco.story?coll=sns%2Dbusiness%2Dheadlines (http://sns.chicagotribune.com/business/nationworld/sns-tobacco.story?coll=sns%2Dbusiness%2Dheadlines)
"We got to that figure ($3 billion) because we thought that figure would hurt them," said juror Ann Anderson, who works as a court clerk supervisor at the superior court's central civil west division, the very building where the trial was held.
Said juror Denise Key, a government worker from Los Angeles: "We want them to be responsible for their product...We want them to put on their product: "It kills.' "
Such a large sum insures the case will be tied up in court long after the smoker passes away from his self-induced aliment.
Thinking about suing McDonald's and Burger King for clogging my arteries. Anyone want to join my class action suit? Of course I'd have it tried in L.A. as there must be something in the water, which is eating away at the reasoning/common sense area of their brains...

Was it a class action lawsuit, or does all of the money go to him?

Actually I think it is the crunchy air. :D

That's what I like to see. Open minded tolerant jurors willing to judge the case on its merits!!

the IRS will be very happy with him.
cripes, 3 BILLION. bill gates move over, ms is about to be bought out lolololol

That is quite dramatically redicules.
There have been blatant warnings on tabacco products for how long now?
This guy just found out that cigarettes were dangerous when he got lung cancer?
I hope that a higher court tosses this.

Karnak,
This sort of thing has been going on here in the USA for about 6 years now. One of the first things billy boy did when he got in office is start the war against the tabaco companies. All that ended up happening is they raised taxes on smokes and people started sewing the industry.

Udie,
Yes, I know.
I feel that the states may have had a valid case, but I have no sypathy for these lawsuits when brought by the consumers. They had fair warning.
The states on the other hand have found themselves paying through the nose for the medical care for people who smoked. The states do that with tax dollars. That means you and I are both paying for the medical care of these people. The states were suing to get some of our tax dollars back.
That's why I think the states may have been justified but tabacco consumers should be SOL as far as lawsuits are concerned.

Three Words....
REDUCED ON APPEAL

I can partialy accept that, except if you follow the money and see where it ends up, ie. hands of lawyers. Then there is the fact that we are forced to pay into mediscare/social security so they should get the medical care. BTW, medicare is about the only tax i don't mind paying, besides our sales tax here in Tx.
They shouldn't even let these people sew over this crap. They've known for hundreds of years that tabaco harms health. I lost my grandfather at age 4 to cancer, so I've known for at least 28 years how bad the stuff is, yet I'm stupid/addicted enough to keep right on doing it. BUT I would never consider sewing Winston or Marlboro for something I did to myself.
Maybe I should sew stop n go for selling them to me when I was under age? Oops can't do that I have a conscience!!!!!

One question,Karnak. Have you received a tax refund from your state to offset the tax dollars you paid for the evil smokers getting sick???
The answer is a resounding NO!!!!!
I bet not one dollar of the confiscated monies from the tobacco companies has been spent on health care!!
Wake up people, fatty foods, SUVs, and gasoline are the next targets of the "do-gooders"!!! They will sell the American public a bill of goods that these are all evil things that should be taxed out of business!! Just like the tobacco industry!!

After we get done cleaning out all the tobacco companies, we'll go after the booze companies.
1) Failure to warn pregnant women that drinking may be bad for your unborn child.
2) Failure to warn me that drinking in excess will lead to liver damage and death.
3) Failure to stop me from drinking too much and then driving my car into a crowd of people.
4) Failure to tell me that using 150 proof as a firestarter is not a good idea.
Pretty soon I'll file a suit against online gaming companies for feeding my addiction and not warning me about it. I ignore my wife and kids and all outside people to play online games until I get headaches. Sometimes, I feel heart attacks coming on because I am either so excited about what's going on, or so pissed at what's going on. It's all their fault and they will pay.
When is someone gonna give me a rating so I can feel good about myself!
<edit: ahhh! I see two people have already put me to five stars! In the immortal words of the great Sally Fields: You like me, you really like me!>

In most of Europe, the income from tobacco tax is at least 10 times higher than the cost of treating *all* cancer related ilnesses.

$3 Billion dollar....
One american who used to be also an alcoholic and drug addict and smoke 2 packs a day for 40 years and never had a CLUE it might be unhealthy...
Now enough money to feed whole Africa....
Trust me, I hate smoking as much as the next astmatic guy and like to see smoking dealt with but 3.000.000.000 dollar as a 'reward' is ludicrous...
I hope he donates it to something worthwhile....

he will never see it. Philip Morris knows what it is doing with cases like this, keep it tied up for years.
If they go for booze next, Philip Morris will again be sued, they own Miller beer. They also own Kraft and Nabisco. Ton of other companies owned by them to. Think it is 10 cents out of every dollar spent at a grocery store goes to Philip Morris.

As I mentioned on an earlier post, awarding the monies to individual plantiffs and lawyers is outright ridiculous and pointless. 3 billion sounds like a good sum, if and only if the vast majority of it goes to a charity. In this particular case, I'd have absolutely nothing wrong with seeing "Tobacco company loses suit, must pay Cancer Research $3 billion!"
No offense, but the public has known smoking was unhealthy for a VERY long time. Yup, the tobacco companies sell it, but the public is who buys and uses the product. IMO, the plantiff deserves very little in this case, perhaps medical expenses. The lawyers deserve some modest fee for being bloodsucking leeches, err, yeah, that's a correct metaphor.
