Northwest Airlines Selects Boeing 787 Dreamliner
--Order includes 18 firm 787-8s, plus options, rights for 50 more
--Airline will be first in North America to bring 787 into revenue service
SEATTLE, May 5, 2005 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Northwest Airlines, Inc. [NASDAQ: NWAC] today announced the airline's order for up to 68 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Northwest will use the 787 to boost operating efficiencies on its long-haul routes.
The order includes firm purchases of 18 787-8s worth, approximately $2.2 billion at list prices, plus options and purchase rights for 50 additional Dreamliners. Six airplanes will be delivered each year during 2008, 2009, and 2010. With its initial delivery in August 2008, Northwest will be the first North American carrier operating the 787.

They must be anticipating all the new found cash the airlines will have by doing away with employee pensions, but that is one slick looking airliner. I hope to see lotsa new jets, as the older types like the 757 are really getting... well, old.

Seriously? The 757 is old?
It seems like the 707 and 727 even the 737 had much longer lifespans in terms of use. The 757 still seems kinda new to me. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Ignored the 707 thing, never seen one in person, but the 737-800 isn't so bad at all, but it is now getting a ton of cycles. The 757? The new Cessnas glass package makes it look like a...

I can remember flying a Eastern Airlines 757 on a company ticket in like 1989 and the Cpt. keeping me awake from ATL to SFO saying it was quite a modern jet marvel, and it might have been.
Now I just think it's a POS. Sorry.

Huh? The 737 and 707 are nothing alike. Not even in shape. Let alone size. Please tell us what parts are used for both the 737 and the 707 I would like to know.

The 757 is "old"? What's old?
Years? Cycles? Technologically? In-Service?
In years, they're not that old in "airliner years".
In cycles... well, it depends on how much you use them, doesn't it? Some may be high cycle but industry wide I think there's plenty more cycles in most of them.
Technologically? Probably "old" in the sense that they're pretty much first generation glass and we're probably Gen III or IV glass now.
In Service? HAH! They're YOUNG. They'll be flying along time yet. They're a pretty efficient 180-200 seat airliner and that's what determines how long an airline keeps them in service. Well, that and replacement price.

737 feusalage n cockpit dimensions are same as 707,i think the 727 is the same ..but im getting old and the memory is somtimes wrong...now where's my beer ?

I'm glad Northwest is getting some new planes. That trip I was supposed to make last month would have been on Northwest - in a DC10!

DC-10 is niceplane and AFAIK those 10's are in great condition.

Boeing just delivered it last production 757 in April bringing an end to a 20 year production run and only the 7th airliner to sell more that 1000 of the type.

IIRC, the fuselage of the 757 is the same crossection in the upper half but not the lower half which is a bit wider. So they would not be the same.

Isn't the 707 and KC-135 basically the same plane?

You'd think so, but the fuselage is different between the two. The KC is a smaller diameter than the civilian 707 but not by much. A few inches IIRC.
