Title: That second 190a-5 skin...
Post by: Krusty on May 08, 2005, 05:17:49 PM
Finished work on the first, so I started on the second. Not too much progress. I took the spinner from the A-8, but I don't like it. I'll be making my own. I'm going to make the panel lines look extra nice on this bird (not that they didn't look nice in the last one I did, I'm just going to put even more work into this one!)

Krusty,

 the Fw190A-5s were used until 1943, typically with the more 'lighter' shades of color before the LW paintjob agenda changed in early '44.

 Like mentioned in other posts, there isn't really a 'correct' sample of RLM colors, but there still is a bit of consensus among the modellers and their research. The colors you are using are much too dark in intensity IMHO. These earlier 190As had somewhat resemblance in colors of those earlier 109s between 1940 and 41, with very lightgrey + palegreen shades as the undercoat, with a two-tone, darker shade of grey/grey green as overcoat/mottling.

 The most famous depiction of Erich Hondt's "Black 13" which can be found in the net, would probably be Jerry Crandall's(which I'm most certain you probably would have seen);

(http://www.hsgalleries.com/gallery04/images/a-5redoverall-2.jpg)

 Here's another take on the "Black 13" by Scott van Aken;

(http://modelingmadness.com/scotts/axis/luft/fw/190/acad190b.jpg)

 My 'intuition' (well.. okay.. wild guess..) is that Crandall's colors are better than van Aken's, but the shape of the unique 'stripes' on the cowl would probably more close to how Aken did it. Crandall's attempt on the stripes are a bit unnatural.

 Another great source for color samples is Eric Whipple's work. This Fw190A-5 model is what I used to sample my colors when doing Egon Meyer's 190A-5

(http://hsgalleries.com/images/fw190a5mayerew_1.jpg)

 Notice the pale grey+green undercoat, the darker grey overcoat, and darker grey/green for mottling patterns.

Ah.. Nice one!

I don't want to only do 190s..  but there are a couple more I'd like to do!

One of them is "White 11" from JG1. Not because of the nose, but because the way the green comes down on the side for the number 11. This is Schott's plane from I./JG1

Bonus is that I've got the checkers mapped out from my last skin! lol!

Still need to add a few things, tweak a few things, and then weather it.

Looks good,  Might wanna try finished everything before doing the paint for scheme it will make life easier in the end.  Then you can put all your schemes in one layer set and be done with it.

Nah, never work in 1 layer.

Got the base sides (grey) the top colors (green/grey) then another layer for the camo splotches, all that x2 1 for each side port/stbd, then a new layer for wings underside, new layer for wings topside base color, new layer for wings topside camo layer, belly, gunpod for outboard 20mms, etc etc.

I said "layer set" not "layer".  I use PS 7.0 and you can set folders to hold your layers to help keep things clean. (where my old copy of 5.5 couldn't not)

The P-38 i'm working on is about 40 layers right now and I've only just now finished the rivets and panel lines.  Those will be merged down to like 3 or 4 then I have a layer set for national markings(6 or 7 some odd layers), a set for weathering eastern front, set for weathering in the pacific, then another set for schemes.

Ahhhhh..
I'm in PS 5.0. I don't have that. Sounds nice, though.

Almost done. I want to add a little bit of paint chipping (not much) around the wing roots and the MG cowling hatch, and I'd love to have some help finding stenciling info, but I'm at a loss on that.

I tweaked the colors (scroll down to see previous version), and right now I think they look good, but I'll take a break from it and come back with fresh eyes later.

Suggestions? Comments? Now's the time :)

Under plane wouldent the red line go all the way?
Title: That second 190a-5 skin...
Post by: Krusty on June 05, 2005, 09:58:51 PM
No, it stops at the wing roots. Right at that spot there is a panel line, but the way it was painted the red line stopped there.

I'm not going to make it that dirty, however. These were 1943 190s, and while they had some dirt and stains, they were for the most part clean and well-kept.

I need gun fire stains, stains by the gear, I want to play around with some by the cowling too. I want chipping paint by some access panels (as mentioned). That's all.

Bah it's not that clean, and I'm not entirely done :)

I usually take a layer and put it over the wings etc that's a cloud-like layer, set it to like 5-10%, maybe on luminosity, or just normal mode. It gives the painted parts of the plane a slightly worn look. I waaaay overdid it on my Emil from way back.

However my last A-5 was accepted (and is now part of the latest skins pack, DL it from the downloads page), and it wasn't much dirtier than this one.
