Title: New P-38J texture
Post by: Razer on May 09, 2005, 10:50:48 PM
Well since the game has progressed enough to add schemes I figured I'd drop back in and work on some textures.  I just started the P-38J.

this is only a start, It still has a long way to go but its looking ok so far.  Once I get all the lines and rivets done I can go in and start adding effects and making it look like a beat up WW2 fighter.

you can't tell with the small pic but those are rivets and not rivet lines.

P-38s were flush riveted. A coat of paint would often hide the rivets to the extent that they could not be seen from just a few yards away. I have photos of the various aircraft I crewed in the Navy. You cannot see the outline of the rivets in the photos, and some were taken just a few feet away.

I think that too much emphasis may be placed upon details that simply will not be seen. Panel lines show up, especially removable panels such as cowling and accessory panels.

Here's a photo I took of a P-40M. Notice you only see hardware removed on a regular basis, access panels. Rivet lines are undefined due to being painted.

ummm,  i know all about rivets and the way planes were built including the lesser know fact that P-51 wings were painted silver from the factory not left metal.  I've been doing this for years.

This is the starts of the scheme and nothing has been adjust to real settings they are all at 100% to make sure everything is in the right place, then i'll lower it to 5% or 7%.

only thing i'm doing now is redoing all the panel lines to be historicly accurate and adding rivets and then i'l work on the base colors and weathering. Then i'll start adding scheme specific items and then finish up the little details like gear wells and cockpit stuff.

little update

I have the upper wings done and almost finished with the hstab.  I did a little bit different approach with this texture.  inside of doing all the panel lines and then going back and doing the rivets i'm doing them sort of the same time while i'm working ont he part.  Things seem to be moving about the same pace but I think it will have the template done a bit sooner.

getting there,  I pretty mch have the panel lines done. Just need to do the radiators and touch up a few places then i can finish the little rivets and start adding the screws on the access panels then its on the the fun part of textures!

I've add a few things left off the default scheme. Things like the mirrors on the inside of the engines, a few access panels, and the landing light.

No leading edge landing light on the early J-10.  If you are doing the L you are fine but it didn't show up until the J-25 and we don't have that in AH2.

Looks good otherwise :)

If it's an L model, it would have to a CBI Lightning. Lockheed stopped applying OD green paint during the J-15 run. All P-38s leaving the factory were natural aluminum. However, in the CBI most, if not all P-38s arriving with the natural finish were painted OD green.

ok, i'm starting to beat it up.  I'm working on weathering and the details now.  I'm going to redo the wheel well art and then start on paint schemes.   What scheme would you guys like to see first?

(note: you can also see the new superchargers)

Razer, incredible work!

Is there any way you can skin Geronimo, an 80th Headhunter skin? If I ever make a mistake and have kids, you can have the first born if you do it.  :)

Here is an early pic of my first scheme,  Still need to do some more weathering in the way of paint flakes but other then that the template is pretty much ready for schemes.

Screwy Looie?  Louis Schriebers 80th Headhunter bird :)  Not that I'm at all partial to Headhunters 38s.

Think you made the same mistake Oboe made when he started that one.  Looks like you spelled Looie with a u instead of 2 oo's.  Photos show it as Looie.

Looks great though.  Do you have something that says that the lettering was green?

Can't tell from the photos but it almost looks red outlined in white.

Dan, I can't seem to find any colorized photos of OD 80th FS P38Ls to help out Razer. Do you have any? Maybe this way, he can get two skins out of one project... the only one I've ever seen with OD on top was 'Geronimo' but I can't seem to find any photos of that bird, nor can I find who originally flew it.

Razer, are you planning on doing any P38G/H skins?

Holy ****. I didn't think AH planes could look so detailed!

Once again, outstanding work.

good catch, yea I didn't have the light on last night while doing the scheme and didn't see the two O's.  Simple fix!

I plan to do many schemes for squadrons so I'll do more form this one.  It just happen to be the first one I saw.

CPorky, Yes, I plan to do all the P-38 line.  I'm currently working on my metal effects to get the L and later J line looking good.

Look for more pics of schemes tonight! (plus fixes for the above one)   I think I'll start a new tread for the real schemes.

I have a few pics of Geronimo II but not the first one.

I claim the p38g so dont spam that one up with this.
If all slots on the p38G are filled up by the time
I submit mine I will not be pleased.

my version of the P-38G has completely reworked
panel lines and rivets redrawn from photos of glacier girl.

everything submitted so far is pretty damn innacurate
as far as panel and rivet detail goes.

I will show pics of what I mean soon.
(kirby's 475FG, 431 FG still in progress)

it will be worth the wait.
I think my last hyperdetailed skin was...

I redid all the panel lines and rivets too.  I never go on what other people do since I don't like to use other peoples work unless I have no choice.

I plan on doing a large number of F, G, H, J, and L schemes since the template works for all planes.  If a scheme is doubled so what. I'm sure people down download the one they like best.

You should be painting because you like too not because your trying to please everyone.  You do that and it wont be fun anymore.

I'm going to work on a few schemes tonight and post more pics.  I still have a ways to go before i'm somewhat happy with the work. (never really happy with anything I do.  :)  )
