I heard on the news last night that U.S. soldiers engaged uniformed insurgents in Iraq. If they are wearing uniforms, this is the start of their demise. But whos uniform is it?
-
they are fighting those that do not want the Iraq people to have freedom and self goverment.
who did you think they were fighting, pancho villa?
-
What an educated reply John.
I know Iran and Syria have been sending mercinaries to Iraq to fight against the U.S.

I doubt they would be uniformed. They may "uniformed" as everyone having their own little uniform - look good, fight good.
-
Uniforms? We don't need no stinking uniforms.
-
Not "Uniformed Insurgents" it's the "Uninformed Insurgents".
:D

So who is the U.S. fighting in Iraq?
That sounds like a good question but the fact that you have to ask it either means you are badly uninformed or that even the US isn't sure.
From what I've read it seems there are a number of groups most of the them former Saddam loyalists well funded by Iraqi Sunni exiles living in Syria. On top of that there are Islamic groups like Al Zarqawi who use foreign fanatics for the suicide bombings.
Their main target at the moment are not so much US as the Shiites and the Iraqi security services. However the Shiites have been warned by their leaders not to react to the provocation because they fear a civil war. The Shiites know that they only have to hang on for a while and they will essentially control the country. When that happens they will tell the US to go. Meanwhile the Iraqi military and police are being built up. Once they are ready and the US is gone there will be reckoning in a typically ruthless fashion.
So who is the US fighting?
The rump of Saddam Hussein's regime and Sunni fanatics.
What is the US fighting for?
A democratic Iraqi Islamic government dominated by the Shiites exactly like the one in Iran.
Ironic really.

Better than a puppet regime, which is what some other nations would have done.

Actually, a recent report from Iraq by the U.S. Army indicates that the Coalition Forces are being hit by mostly foreign insurgents and Islamic fundamentalist fanatics. The report also mentions that attacks by native Iraqi insurgents has dropped off quite a bit since the recent national elections and that quite a bit of these groups are in negotiation with the fledging government for amnesty so they can be "brought into the political process". The report also says that of all the suicide bombers, not one has been confirmed as a native Iraqi.
The report came out on Sunday/early Monday so you should be able to find it easily. It was in most of the major US newspapers.

There are still Sunni's, Ba'athists and such behind some of the violence, as well as foriegn fighters supported/directed by Zarqawi and other's like him. cpxxx had it about right, except what the U.S. if fighting for. Saying we are fighting for a Shi'ite dominated government is totally opinion, nothing more. The Shia, Sunni and Kurds all have carved out thier place in the Iraqi govt and it's looking good, we're going to do whatever it takes to keep it looking good, probably for as long as it takes. It's doubtful the "Shia will tell us to go". The Iraq Govt may eventually ask us to leave, but even then, it's doubtful we'll completely "go" for a very very long time.

There was a good story in the washington post this morning about the fight this week.
We kicked some ass

Yes it is my opinion that the Iraqi government will tell the US to go when the time is right. Tell rather than ask at least for the sake of appearances in the Arab world. Again just my opinion.
I think that's the last thng they want right now is a premature US withdrawal. Whatever your feelings about the rights or wrongs of the war. The US must stay the course and that means more US casualties. Pull out now and the terrorists win and it will all have been for nothing. Just like Vietnam.
The insurgents want the US to pull out now before a stable government is in power. Meanwhile they do their best to destabilise that government.
They can't be allowed to win.
