Title: Using DDR500 on AMD64s
Post by: Kev367th on May 13, 2005, 12:12:46 PM
This should also apply to other motherboards.
For different CPU modify the multiplier as needed.

This is specifically aimed at an ASUS A8V with a 3500CPU

Defaut is 200fsb x 11 multiplier = 2200 = 2.2GHz (A64 3500)
Default HTT = 1000 (200x5)

To use DDR500 to its fullest -
1) Set FSB to 250
2) Setmultiplier to 9, that gives 9x250 = 2250, so a very slight overclock. Easily attainable have seen this motherboard run in excess of 268fsb settings.
3) Set HTT to 800, I know but ignore the 800 it actually gives 4x250=1000

To understand the HTT setting
It's the FSB x a multiplier
Therefore at default 200fsb -
1000=5 multiplier
800=4 multiplier

To use a 250fsb the multiplier must be set at 4 which equals the 800 setting. It still results in 250x4=1000HTT

End result is the CPU, HTT and the memory all running synchronously which is the preferred method.

As soon as I pick up some OCZ Gold DDR500 memory (CAS2) going to give it a go.

i done this for a while with my PC3200 ballastics, unluckly one died after a few weeks (very unlikely to do with overclocking).

the replacement tops out at about 247mhz :mad: when in DC and 252 whe in SC. Where as before the pair did 258 in DC and 270 in SC... but thats the luck of the draw.

Did the 250fsb:250mem make things better for you? Im currently using 240fsb:200mem

Running synchronouslt has ALWAYS been preferable to an asynch setup.
Didn't get them yet, can afford either DDR500 OR AMD64 X2 4400.
Still deciding.

OCZ Gold VX is rated at DDR500 CAS2 3.3v in dual channel. Only ones I have found that will run dual channel CAS2 at DDR500.

defo dual core.......... as those Cas2 DDR500s need 3.3 volts, and i dont think the Asus can do that, even with a mod (overvolt protection at 2.9/3volts?)

what is dual core already out over there? here in the UK i dont expect them to be out (in numbers) this year :( hell you cant even get FX55's

oh and about asynch. with my setup its better because the latency's are so high with these chips (as i said about the poor replacement i got) 240 3-4-4-10 or 200 2-2-2-10. I know the 2nd option is alot faster in all 3dmarks, and HL2 tests.
