Over the years I have owned a lot of cars and worked on em... I came to realize that given a normal income (not fabulously wealthy) there are certain cars that a person must own in his lifetime.. Not just own but live with for... oh... say a year..
Ya gotta own one convertable for a year.
Ya gotta own one real hot rod roadster or coupe of the 30's vintage with a hot V8..
Ya gotta own one big block muscle car from the sixties/seventies with some susspension and brake improvements.
A good pre 72 corvette is a must.. early ones can be small blocks... after 64 they need to be a big block.
one brit or eye ti sports roadster from the fifties or sixties.
A really fast 55-57 chevy coupe or Nomad.
There are others but those come to mind.
A sprinkling of interesting motorcycles (please... spare me the friggin sport bikes) is a good thing too.

And a high paying job. Single with no kids.

-
My favorite in that list would be a Chevy Nomad. I thought they were hard to find though.
Why not sport bikes? Certainly they are a thrill to ride through some twisties.
-
Because it's Lazs list and he dosn't like sports bikes. :)
...-Gixer
-
The Nomads aren't that hard to find but when you find one look for a second one to cannibalize for the first one. I have been looking for a Nomad wagon for about 15 years and each one I get close to buying has already been sold or scrapped. Its been a life long dream to rebuild one and drive it out to California just for kicks.

This was the best car I ever owned:
When I was in college I bought a friend’s old Dodge Dart, chopped off the roof and screwed on some plywood wings and other crap. I had a total of $500 into it by the time it was road ready. I drove it from 1987 to 1994 all year round in all kinds of weather. That car was a blast.
My other favorite cars were a VW Karman Ghia that I chopped up just as bad and a hippy style 23-window, 6-foot sunroof VW bus. I’ve spent over 500 nights in that van (down by the river.)

a pickup should be in there somewhere.
-
I always figured a 10 bay garage to be about perfect, although 2 are for maintanence.
My cars would be:
1972 Stingray convertible, big rat motor, metalflake blue with a white leather interior.
1936 Ford, running as a '50's stocker, with a flathead and no fenders.
1974 Bronco, with a pickup cab, and tall narrow tires, orange.
1966 Thunderbird, with the 428, white leather interior and fender skirts, painted metalflake baby blue.
1968 Mercedes 280, though I would have a few modifications:
2003 Thunderbird, flat baby-blue.
T-bucket, nuff said.
2005 Ford F350 with a service body, including a welder, air compressor, torch and enough tool boxes to git 'er done.
-
My goal once I get a more disposable income is to build a nice Cobra kit car. Talk about a fun ride

I've always wanted a 64/65 mustang convertible...

I would love to own a cobra.

I've always wanted a Mercedes Kompressor convertable.

I agree with rpm. I am sorely tempted by the lure of a Mercedes Benz convertible - would have to be the SLK 350 cabriolet.
(http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content/media_library/unitedkingdom/mpc_unitedkingdom/passenger_cars/products/new_cars/cabriolet/slk-class/gallery/uk-slk-cabrio-560x160-001.object-Single-MEDIA.jpg)
But bloody hell - £34k price tag. I'd actually prefer the SL350, but that's £60k.
Some of those redneck cars listed above would be of no interest.

And for bikes the Vincent Black Shadow.

hmm... yep, everyone owns a pickup now and again.
sport bikes... common as dirt... everyone and his brother has one.. you have to fight people off to keep them from "ya gotta ride my neon rocket" crap... even gixer picked a Vincent as a "must have" Harleys are getting to be common as dirt but the old ones are a different experiance. A four cylinder henderson or indian is interesting... even a pre unit triumph or Aerial square four.
I was tempted on the Porche thing but I never liked driving em and they were allways expensive to work on. Had a speedster for about a month and didn't like it.
The mercedes were all pretty boring.
Cobra kit car is fine... They do one thing ritgh at least..get rid of everything british except the look... the cars are fiberglass tho and you are forever explaining about "no.. it's not a real cobra but it is really better than a real ..." Same for the kit car porche speedsters and... all the fiberglass Hot Rods.

Hey Lizking, just curious, have you ever worked on a R113 chassis before?
I agree with Lasz on the whole Mercedes thing.
My pick: 1965 GTO in turquoise, 4 speed manual, 3.73 rearend, headers, tri-power, and an AM radio. I am a minimalist.

Cripes Laz, do you know how much a pre 72 large block corvette costs? A 70 or 71 isnt too bad, but any earlier than that (especially when you hit the mid-years) and ouch. I plan on owning one, but I might have to forgo some of the others.

one of the few cars I regret getting rid of was my '59 vette. You can still get deals on 60's vettes but you have to do a lot of the work yourself.

Well I would have to say a imported Fairlady Z right hand drive. I saw a nice restored one the day. Or a 70/71 240 Z in Orange :aok

I just hope china will start making cars soon. We need to fuel their economy.

Yea, you would definately need to do your own work. I've seen some crazy prices on mid-years. A '59 would be sweet to own, you rarely see something like that anymore, around here at least.

i want a Nissan Skyline GT-R. sorry, but since they dont sell them in states, i want what i cant have.

Lazs,
Actually as far as classics go, I'd class just about any british pre 60's bike as a "must have" just for the experience. With the Vincent Black Shadow being at the top of the list.
For a modern classic it would be the Ducati 916 SPS

MT, I agree, but only if you have the terrain to use it. I can't imagine having a Jeep in Kansas.

aaaagh - jeeps! I was *transported* in a Jeep once - I was in the US at the time. I think it was called a Renegade or something like that, and looked like that black thing in the pics above^. It was a lunch outing from work. We only had to go a short distance - less than 2 miles, and even though it was 25 years ago, I will never forget that ride as the most bone jarring, uncomfortable experience I've ever had.
The most uncomfortable ride since then was in 1999 - a ride to the airport in a Lotus Elise. I had to be helped out of it by a couple of SkyCap girls. :lol

LOL beetle... here even women don't think the jeep is too bad.. Lotta women own em.
916 Duccati? My son owned one. I rode it a little. he had the fairing off. I thought it was ok for a sport bike. I can ride a sport bike any time I want... Like I said... ya gotta beat people off to keep em from forcing you to ride their lattest cooky cutter neon rocket. He allso had a buel... that was a neat bike but not a must have.
Fairladies? drove a few... what a boring friggin car. miata? seriously... I am fairly secure in my masculinity but.... that is pushing it.
Four wheelin? never got into it much.
The cars I mentioned can all be had for reasonable amounts if you buy a poor example and fix it up or make a clone. I even find examples of big Healeys that can be had for less than ten grand that could be Americanized. Jensen Healeys are cheap as dirt. Plain jane chevells and tempests are cheap. No cheap Porches.
lazs

Pantera
Testarossa
Speed12
Modena, 430 or 360
the Tommy Kaira ZZ with a mid-mounted Skyline engine and adjustable torque split.
Realisticaly, a GT-R N1 could be it.
If cash were no object I'd do a first year Cerbera 4.5 and fix the handling. Or the same with a BMW M1, though that's prolly not realistic.

Always wanted a microbus.. My buddy had one. Seemed to be up on blocks more than it was on the road.
We took it into the mountains once.... just once. With a full load of teenagers and their stuff it made it about 1/2 way. Even in 1st gear the little motor was screaming for help.

Don't know about "must own before you die" cars. All I really want right now is to get my '78 Scout Traveller Diesel running again.
...preferably without the diesel.
hhhmm, and an FJ40.

back in the late 60's the microbus was a "must have"... I never seen one make it to Tahoe.. every single one of em blew their underpowered little guts out up hill.
I did trade my Olds powered 57 chevy for the night for one of em for a drive in movie date. I think my sone was concieved in one of the damn things. Love my son but still have no fond memories of those worthless little bus's

I still haven't seen one in person. All we have around here are the neutered G35s. I know one person that bought one & bolted on the twin turbos as soon as they were released. Fast. Fun... but still not a real R34 Skyline :)

Shelby GT500 would be fine by me.

I never understood why they'd call a Skyline anything without its inline-6 turbo.

The `61 Vette I had would have to go on the top of my list I guess as the car I liked and miss the most.
Most cars I`ve owned, like anything else, over time you grow used to and just sort of take for granted and is no biggy after a while. Not so with the Vette for me. Every time I got in and cranked her up it was a blast. One of the few cars I`ve owned that I actualy drove just for the pure pleasure of driving.
The Cobra--- I had a female friend who had a nice Cobra.
It was super fast. (The car)
Looked great and was fun to to take for a cruise. (Both)
Purred like a kitten and clung like glue. (Both)
Big headlights. (The gal)
Wife made me give it up. (Both) :)
The Porsche--- Possibly the ugliest piece of metal ever assembled into anything resembling an auto. An overglorified Karmen Ghia.
-
dago.. yu can build a shelby 350 or 500 clone pretty reasonably..
yep.. early vette... I had both tops for it and loved the way it sounded with headman headers and corvair turbo mufflers with the top off... short stick hurst linkage and really sweet small block..
I am talking about cars that you have to own for a year. I don't like porches but can see how they would fit.
We are talking about cars that you want to drive every day.. cars that are fun just to fire up and ones that you don't have to worry about getting into the wrong one of the same color in the parking lot.
head turners but not kings ransom cars.
Rather have a early vette in primer with ratty interior than a brand new lexus kind of thing...
