Title: A Few Good Men?
Post by: slimm50 on May 18, 2005, 08:39:07 AM
My niece, and her proud papa. She just finished Paris Island, and now at 29 Palms for more training before finally shipping to Iraq (at least that's what they told her, so far). Her dad's a former Jar Head, and quite proud of his baby girl.

How'd you know?

BTW, what makes this especially poignant is that she was the really rebellious type from the age of 15: drugs, gothic, chains and gangs and....well, you get the picture. She's 19 now and I think she's gonna be alright.:D

It's not a medal.  It's a qualification badge.  If you don't have one as a Marine, you ain't a Marine.

There is a medal there too...well the ribbon version of it. The "National Defense Medel" that they issue to everybody while we are engaged in a major campain...I got one in boot camp..and another when the war started. Just for being here.

cc...I'd have thought that if you weren't a marine you wouldn't get the uniform, suppose different armies do things differently.

WTG to her and the family.

Tell her semper Fi from a fellow leatherneck.

BTW the rifle badge she is wearing is the Marksman AKA the "pizza box"

It is the lowest you can get....I know cause I graduated Recurit Training with it as well.

I see she's got PFC out on as well.  That's good to go!

Again congrats! :aok

I still maintain that she could shoot your tulips at 200 yards with an M-16, medal or no.

Thank God for Marines and the other services who are making sure we idiots can have the luxury of saying or posting whatever we want in this country.

yup the 200 yard line on the KD range is in fact the bread and butter as far as points go.  Wasnt insulting her (although she will take some greif for being a "pizza box"....speaking from experience here)

What's funny is I was lousy at first at the 200 meter line but 300 slow fire and 500m slow fire I excelled at.

I found the 500 to be the gimmie.  Tighten the strap and cut off the circulation on your upper arm, wedge the stock into your shoulder and done.

yup it's hard to miss when shooting a 5ft target with a loop sling.  If you got a good zero on your weapon and wind call just line up the black and squeze, the rifle and position do most of the work.

on the new range scoring system you get 2 points per hit on the 200m slow fire, dog target, sitting kneeling standing for a total of 30 points.  After that it's all bread and butter.  Do that and get 1 out of 2 possibles on the rapid fire and you got expert no problemo.

Unfortunatly I didn't learn to properly shoot till my last range in the corps so i never got a second award expert.

I found it was all about being flexible, in the sitting position I could lean forward and get my elbows on the ground.  Helped out alot.  We would spend a good week's worth of stretching and finding a good position before we shot.

Sitting and standing I sucked at because I wasn't that flexible and being 5 11" didn't help.  Kneeling otoh was my best.  Alot of guys complained about the kneeling but I allways had a real good position and could maintain it long enough without my ankles or knees hurting too much.

Prone was a piece of cake except on the Range at yuma.  We had gravel on our firing line.  Doing the range in the hottest part of august laying down on 100+ degree rocks with out any shade what so ever was an exercise in pain to say the least.

My kneeling position turned into a sitting position, more or less.  Sort of cheating, but it worked.

Not sure, just the women have them.  Deco?

here - http://www.olive-drab.com/od_soldiers_clothing_ww2_usmc_women.php

Women Reservists were easily recognized by their unique, visored bell-crowned hat, trimmed with a lipsick-red cord which set them apart from the WACs, WAVES, and SPARS whose hats closely resembled one anothers.

I dont ever remember being taught any significance of the red braid.  On the male garrison cover were the braid would be we have a patten leather strap.  The only significant differences in the covers are the quatrafoil on top of the officers cover.  Its origins come from colonial Marines.  It was used by sharpshooters in the ships riggins to identify the officers so they wouldnt get shot.

honestly I don't get it.  But she's wearing her Service "C" uniform wich calls for the cover she's wearing.

The girls got it made in that aspect.  Those covers are form fitting and actually VERY comfortable compared to the guy's hat.  We'd sit on the parade deck for hours waiting to be inspected and our hats front and back edges would litterally dig into your skin on your forehead.  After about 20 minutes I imagined I knew what an anurism feels like.

Edit:  Technically it does have an eagle on it.  It's just sitting on a globe with an anchor through it.
