Is it s civilian agency, or a military one?

I would call it civilian/semi-military. It is part of Dept of Homeland Sec. It use to be under the Dept. of Trans.

Yes rpm was in it. It is under the Dept. of Transportation during peace but is transferred to the Navy during wartime.

The US Coast Guard is a military agency. It is in no way, shape or form a civilian agency. Diablo is correct, in that it was under the Dept. of Transportation while I was in and it is placed under the Dept. of the Navy during war or national emergency. It was transferred to the DHS when that agency was formed.
It is also the only fulltime active military agency in the US. The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines are in training mode until directed to act. The Coast Guard is in active mode 24/7/365 with Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue and Aid to Navigation.
Just a side note, when Task Force Tarawa was sent to Iraq my old ship USCGC Boutwell was on point. It was also featured on "Mail Call" hosted by R.Lee Ermey.

For the Navy, it's not so much directed to act, as deployed.

Wrong answer. Every woman in the military is a hero. However, each branch of the service has a unique nickname or moniker for their females in uniform.
That's what I'm looking for.

We Navy guys don't have a name for the females...well except for "slut" or "potato" but that isn't a blanket nickname..thats reserved for the ones who shamelessly use their bodies to get what they want out of the service..or the ones running prostitution rings on the Carriers...It's hard to respect the women in the Navy when we have so many problems with them. They aren't half the soldier that the women in the other services are.

1st ship was all male...work got done no problem...2nd ship was "integrated" The women always had some reason for getting out of the hard jobs like painting etc...not to mention it just causes problems with unit cohesion since the ship looks the other way most of the time when people start dating (a clear violation of the fraternization policy) or married people cheat with a "shipmate" ..then when they get tired of sea duty, they get pregnant and leave the ship..leaving a gapped billet since BUPERS will not replace them until their original transfer date is up...they do not belong on our ships..period!

There were a couple of women from the USS Vulcan, the first US Navy ship to have a combined sexes crew, that stayed in Naples and ran a potato house there after realising how much money they made on ONE ship. Oh, and that other girl from the Vulcan, what was her name.....OH YES, Pierside Paula!!!

We're going to Europe on the Eagle. :D
(I know there's going to be a lot of tough **** too, though. But you gotta stay focused on the bright side.)

As for the "integrated" ships, I did'nt have a lot of experience with them. The Munro had females on board but trust me, I would not have hit them with Nuke's unit. The BM1 looked like she fell off the ugly tree and hit every limb on the way down.:eek:

I have a friend who has to defer to NAPS (prep school) for a year before going to the Coast Guard Academy. She's incredibly jealous of the trip to Europe. Apparently, her cruise is to New Jersey, or something similar.

Gotta Love the Spoils of war..EAGLE used to be the German ship HORST WESSEL taken after WW2 to the US and commissioned in the Coast Guard..Russia got the GORCH FOCK(Tovarish) and 2 others went elsewhere in the world. Great Ships!

Really? When were you on the Munro? I was on the crew that traded the Mellon for her up in Kodiak in '80!

I was on Boutwell 79-81. We used to tie up beside Munro at Pier 36 in Seattle. Do you remember when we tagged Munro the night before the Portland trip?:rofl

Ahhh...then it was before "The Great Swap" :) Wouldn't have been any female I knew then (though I think I may have seen that monster during those couple of days we tied up along side each other). First person I worked for after boot camp was a female BM2...Cynthia Warren. Better than most the men on that ship and stronger than half. One of the most knowledgable BMs I ever had the pleasure of working with. And in a wet suit....oo la la...we called her the last of the Amazonian Wonders. Ahhh....my youth.
I was on the Mellon in 78-79 in Honolulu. We took her up to Kodiak in '80 to swap out with the Munro. We took a ship that had been in port for 6 months being painted and prettied up and traded it for one that had been at sea for 3 months...and which we were taking out on our 3 month Alpat from there :( When we got her home to Hawaii she was in rough shape. Probably looked a lot like that BM1 you're talking about!

Munro was always a grungy ship. I remember the first time I boarded her to swap some perijet eductors. I could not get over how filthy it was. CWO Hamm would have killed us if we ever let Boutwell get in that shape.

Both ships were under orders that everything had to go, including items in storage. We had that baby packed to the gills with stuff. When we got there we had gangways on both sterns and both bows with the ships tied up on opposite sides of the pier. For 2 days it looked like ants going back and forth, up one side with arm loads of stuff, down the other empty, rinse, repeat. The only things that stayed on the ship were items that were bolted down or specific to that class of ship (Mellon was Secretary Class, Munro was Hero). We got underway at the end of the third day and found we had no plates or silverware except for these cheap plastic "trays" and plastic "picnic style" utensils. We cleared port at Kodiak and immediately CASREP'd the main radar on the bridge and the sonar :( When we went to fix stuff we found out there were "no parts" on board. Immediate protest lodged with both District Admirals :(
Turns out the Munro crew was under the impression that we were leaving Hawaii without all the gear we were ordered to take, so they kept as much of their stuff as possible in storage back in Seattle and made their Alpat bare bones. Which really screwed us since we had to take that pig back out to sea for 3 more months. Our Captain was spitting nails the entire trip...what a fiasco :(
