According to the Navy Times (http://www.navytimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-858022.php), this is the largest warship ever sunk by any means during war or peace time.

From everything I've heard it was a POS that would have sunk on it's own soon anyway...SINKEX's are the best fun! ex-AMERICA

BTW wonder why the AMERICA and not the "Forest-fire" or SARATOGA ?

How many times have I heard that about the "last sea-command" someone was on.

I particularly don't like SINKEX's but some good does come out of them, in this instance fire/damage control techniques.

Better to sink decommed ships and get some final use out of em then to just send em to the scrapyard.

Agreed, but that doesn't mean I still gotta like it.

Exactly ASTAC. I hope they got some useful data that will save lives in the future.

They can't all be museums..carriers are boring museums anyway...next on our tour is the big flat deck callled the flight deck...and just below is another big open deck called the hangar deck...this ends our tour thanks for coming.

I dunno about that. In the scrap yard you can at least get some money out of it. Sinking it, while visually impressive, doesn't generate income unless you sell tickets to the event. I'd be interested to see a cost analysis though between the scrapyard profits vs the dollar value of the information they gained by using it for an explosives testbed. Can't automatically assume our government does things the profitable way.

The Navy needs research like this...Though old it is designed much like our newer carriers..of which there has never been any kind of real life survivability tests other than flight deck fires...using a sinkex they can determine deficiencies in the design and make improvements on ships still in commission..thus saving lives and equipment which far outvalues any money made from scrapping..steel only goes for 1 to 3 cents per pound anyway these days.

The price for cutting it up was about twice that of preparing it for sinking and doing it.

Cant back up the figures, but I read it afew places when they first announced that they were doing it, and why.

Im sure you can find it if you google.

Dirty Steel is $.037 a pound today, clean is .067 a pound.  Probably going to keep going up, especially considered the 3 fold increase in steel prices from two years ago.

Figure the America's displacement in just steel, and it $6.3 million on a low ball calling it all dirty steel, figure in say atleast 200 tons (seems real light) of copper wiring, that gets you another $650k.  What about all the other precious metals used in bearing surfaces and shafts, what are the props made of, bronze?  That alone is gonna be a hefty recycling deal.  All in all, the scrap value of a carrier I bet is over $25 mil.

As for using a retired warship for testing, I say hell yes.  But, obviously the need for test beds will not supercede the amount of ships that are decomissioned.  Scrapping them is a great use of the metals involved and helps to bring some profit back from a esentially non usable hulk.

China would have given you 50 million for it.

Hell, I'd pay 50 mil for it; and declare war on france.

I don't think I'd have any problem finding an all volunteer crew.

;)

Rig it as a drone to draw out all the silkworms, give it 4 drone Knox class frigates and a drone CG. would be hillarios to see the chinese bust thier nut on it.
I did that all the time in the old harpoon game. Send out a knox 100 miles and light up all the radar...the poor AI russians would unload 70 missles on it, then I would mop them up with the rest of the fleet.
