My daughter needs a car for college. We need one that will be used and will need to be economical and not really that sporty or fancy, it just needs to run good. I've heard the Japanese cars are very good for reliability and good gas mileage. What should I look for? My oldest daughter had a grand am that was literally a piece of crap on 4 wheels. Like I said, we are looking for reliability and economy. Thanks.

Can't believe I'm gonna say this...Honda Accord. They are almost indestructable.
-
As much as it pains me to say this.... Honda, all day, I have had 2 hondas for winter beaters, total piles of junk but no matter how hard i tried I couldnt kill either one, and the mileage is excellent. Stay away from Mitsubishis, they are junk and the parts cost an arm and a leg.
-
Honda. Toyotas are also very good.

Yep. Ladyfriend had a good half-dozen accidents involving stationary objects this past year and the car keeps on going. Just make sure you get your daughter a good spare tire and a roll of duct tape.
-
The older Toyotas are very dependable and easy to maintain, the W & H class GM cars are very dependable too, totaly different design from Grand Am. Don't beleve what people tell you about Hondas being dependable, they're crap and very expensive to repair.
-
Hyundai is comparable to Toyota in reliability and much cheaper. I'd keep away from Honda. Way overrated and expensive cars especially the low end models. Stay away from anything made in the US or Europe.
-
Get her a newer model Honda Accord or Honda Civic.
-
get her a 1968 El Camino or a 1965 Chevy stepside pickup. :p
-
Get her a Cannondale. College was made for bicycles.
-
My wife had a civic. It died one day, engine light and it wouldn't start, before we got married. Damned redneck mechanics tried to sell her $2500 new engine, so she abandoned it in place. A year later, we saw the car driving around.
So Civics rule as long as racist ultra melon mechanics don't trick you into junking your car.

honda
i worked at a dealership back in the day, and we had cars comming in for oil changes every week with 300,000 miles on them, and you'd never know.
they are vertible tanks in reliability. body isn't the strongest, and will crumple when hitting a solid object like say, a butterfly, but they will still run after being run over by a dump truck.
-
had a 94 civic I put over 200,000 in 3.5 years and it gave me zero trouble over it's 10 years of dependable service
my youngest son totaled it his first year driving
-
if she's hot she can ride in my Corvette while I go through my mid-life crisis.
-
I agree on the Hondas and Toyotas, in that order. Hyundai is junk though; they lose 90% of their value in about 4 years. If safety is a priority, you can’t beat Volvo (Saab is a close second) but maintenance costs are much higher.
I’ve always bought my used cars at auctions and paid about 20% of their retail list. Even if you buy a car that needs a minor repair you’re still way ahead of the game. Look into local actions.

1988-1993 Saab 900S
Engines are bullet-proof. Can easily get over 250k miles. Good mileage, 27 or 28mpg highway. Solidly built. Just don't get one that needs work if you can't do it yourself. Mechanics make a killing on them. Older Volvos are great too.
-
Ditto on the Saab. Although maybe shy away from the turbo-equipped models if you dont want her going too fast.
-
I would say a honda as well, get a 90s or newer civic will fuel injection.
Don't buy her a newer toyota, they suck ass.
Mora coment about them being like a hyundia is not saying much but it's true. Everyone I know I have been around recently was totaly garbage.
-
1st choice would be the Honda
2nd would be a newer Saturn.
-
man this is the easiest aswer ever (!)
Honda Accord (LX) or Toyota Camty, Hyundai Sonata (Watch the commercials and everything they say is true! 160K powertrain warranty for 10 years)
(sry but they're not American)
:)

dayum right! A good 91-93 Accord LX, LXi, or EX is what ya wanna get. As long as ya change the oil, keep water/antifreeze in the radiator, and don't over rev the engine they'll run forever.
I bought a 92 LX sedan with a 5sp to use as a pizza car =)
And make sure ya CarFax (http://www.carfax.com) the cars you look at. Look for accident reports and mileage discrepancies. Lotta good info to help you make a decision.

Man, so far it is sounding like Honda is the front runner. Dumb question maybe, but a lot of civics seem to have a "******* pipe" as I call them, ( you guys might call them a megaphone muffler?) and they buzz like a chainsaw gone berzerk. Are the Civics generally hotrodded by kids or is it just a few that I notice?
Hmmm can't say ******* so I will say it rhymes with gr*******
I tell ya, the filter is touchy... @$h hole pipe.... looks like a butthole lol
-
Honda prices are over inflated because every 16 year old kid thinks he can put a big ****in wing on the back, some stickers on the side, a ****ty muffler on it, and call it a race car. Get her either an older Saab or Volvo. Both are dependable, economical, and very safe. Like I said in my earlier post, I highly recommend a 88-93 Saab 900S. That's the non-turbo model. They are bulletproof and get good gas mileage.
-
1972 Chevy Impala.
Safe, dependable, can launch and recover aircraft on the hood.
-
89 Ford Escort. :p
-
Lol Hangtime, that reminds me of my folks's car they had at one time, a 1971 buick electra. Man that was an aircraft carrier on 4 wheels.
-
Can also vouch for the Hyundai Santa Fe.
Picked one up for my wife a few years ago and shes still ecstatic with it. (she even named the damn thing)
Havent had a single problem with it (knock on wood)
Drives/handles nice, decent acceleration. Real good views for good SA. And it sits high enough where you can see whats going on in front of the guy in front of you yet is low enough you dont haveta climb in
And it has that great Hyndai warranty

In the same spirt as Mk.V:
Save a lot of $, just buy her some short skirts
-
Take out a big life insurance policy on her and then get her a miata.
