went to pick up my laptop yesterday and the screen came off and broke.
they say its not covered under the 300 dollar warranty that i purchased, even though it was thier defective hinge that caused the issue, but they are happy to give me 100$ of the purchase of a new laptop.
screw em. im done.
any suggestions on a new brand?
-
That sucks. I've been really happy with my T41 Thinkpad, and their newer models have gotten even better.
-
hows the service and support on those?
can they handle graphics programs pretty well?
-
Haven't had need to use their support, so I can't offer first hand experience, but I've heard good things, for what it's worth.
My laptop has the laptop RAGE whatchamacallity chipset, so it's pretty screamin' for a laptop. It supports like dual 1600x1200 or something monitors, so I can't call the onboard graphics anemic.
-
Toshibas are pretty good too..thats what I want next.
I have a stupid HP for work purposes. I hate to say it but so far it hasn't given me any problems. Its about 2 years old...
-
thanks chairboy, gonna have to look into that.
: )
thinking about going mac too.
whatever i do, its gonna have to wait a bit cuz money is an issue.
sigh.
die dell. die.

i am not exactly what one might call "overly nice" to laptops. i stay VERY mobile. lol.

You can always check out the Toughbook series (IBM?) if they still make them. Slightly pricier than normal, but with a magnesium case, it'll shrug off small arms fire and still boot into windows. My only gripe with them was, while perfect for what I needed them for, was the weight. I think the positivies outweighed the negatives though.
-
Havn't had any trouble with dell...
Of course.. I didn't order a laptop..
-
my sis has an HP, and it's pretty cool....
though i'd say the sony looks the coolest to me
both
stay away from anything dell or gateway
-
Panasonic makes the Toughbook, and they're cool, but spensive. I wonder how comfortable they are to use, considering the steps they take to protect the keyboard from moisture and stuff.
-
Indy yeah thats what I was thinking as well..Toshiba use to make one as well. But I don't see it.

Welcome to Dell Chat. Please wait for an available agent. You will be notified when your chat is accepted by an agent.

{Srini 11:13:12 AM} May i know when and how did this incident happen.
{ 11:13:40 AM} yesterday. i went to move the unit, holding the top and the bottom.
{Srini 11:13:50 AM} Do you see the leakage on the screen.
{ 11:14:27 AM} i see a big black splotch and a few spots with pinkish colors.
{Srini 11:15:45 AM} I am sorry to hear that. We will try to resolve all your concerns to your satisfaction. Please allow me 2-4 minutes to research on this issue. I will get back to you soon. Thank you.

{ 11:18:55 AM} hello. sorry, i think i got disconnected.
{Srini 11:19:24 AM} I am still here August.
{ 11:19:55 AM} great! thanks. the windows all closed but i used my history. works.
{Srini 11:23:05 AM} August, As u mentioned that the screen fell down and got LCD got broke, The LCD has to be replaced. However as i see that this type of incident is not covered under warranty, I will not be in a position to replace the LCD screen, And you will have to contact our OUT OF WARRANTY department for further support.
{ 11:24:47 AM} that is what they are telling me. but i feel that it was a defective part which caused the problem and is dell's responsibility.
{Srini 11:27:03 AM} August, I see that this system is pretty old, Which was bought on may 2003. This type of incident will not be covered under warranty, Other wise i surely would have replaced it.
{ 11:28:13 AM} that is why i continued my warranty service. i am planning on buying a new one in the next 6 months but do not feel that i should continue to be a customer if dell will not support its existing hardware.
{ 11:29:03 AM} its two years old. i have had the same golf clubs for ten years. id hardly call it old. : )
{Srini 11:29:33 AM} August, I do understand that, I surely could have helped you, However this is not under my hands, I am just following the policies.
{ 11:29:46 AM} who can help me?
{ 11:31:22 AM} at what point does dell draw the line on when a system is worth saving or not?
{ 11:32:44 AM} my warranty is about to expire. is this why? does dell expect me to spend 500 to get a repair and THEN spend another few thousand to buy a new system when the time comes?
{Srini 11:33:09 AM} As all our Supervisor has gone on an important meeting, You may chat back.
However for your information, You may contact our out of warranty department at 1-800-288-4410 with the case reference number which is 101881692 .
{ 11:33:57 AM} when will the supervisor be back? can i wait? i'll be online all day and have a contact number.
{Srini 11:35:18 AM} As far as i have information, It will take around 30minutes, You may chat back with the case number which i gave. I am sorry August, As i said, I don't have enough permission to take a decision on this issue. I hope you understand.
{ 11:35:57 AM} i do. but i would very much like to resolve this issue. so i should take the number and come back in an hour or so?
{ 11:36:12 AM} how do i chat back?
{Srini 11:37:27 AM} You may click this link
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/en/chat?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

The pair I used took probably 300 - 400 paintball hits in 24 hours while closed up. I washed it off with an alcohol filled spray bottle. Nothing ever got inside. I was impressed. The keyboard itself though... well, I've never liked typing on laptops keyboards. I'd sooner carry a regular USB keyboard around with me in a backpack :) They just don't *feel* right... but then again I've had the same keyboard since '98 cuz I refuse to change it.

Srini, huh? Guess Dell is still outsourcing.
{ 11:13:40 AM} yesterday. i went to move the unit, holding the top and the bottom.
You should've said "I opened the LCD screen to use the laptop and it appears the right/left hinge failed causing the screen to come loose and fall from my hand. I'd like to file a claim using the warranty I purchased that says, "All non-abusive breakage and failures are covered."
Honestly, it sounds like your buttered unless you really want to push the issue with them but good luck with that.
-
Nothing beats a T-series Thinkpad. They are solid and has that Darth Vader look as a bonus.

Not a problem, its what I deal with everyday at work.

Next time dont pick the laptop up by the screen and you should be fine, August.
:lol

I've had dell, gateway, HP and sony laptops. All of 'em together ain't worth a fiddlers dam compared to the robust construction of the IBM I had first and the one I've got now.
If yer rough on the equipment, nothin is as tuff as the IBM. Worth the bucks, IMO.
-
Does Dell offer an extended warrenty that covers the screen If it is still under its main warrenty?
Alot of times they let you buy the extra warrenty that covers what is broken, There tech would not know, but there sales men would know.
I do that all the time with the hp laptops i support here( Note, Never buy an hp laptop. I have only had one that lasted its 1 year warrenty, with out having to go in. )
Panasonic Makes a great tough book, They are pricy, but great.
I allways push for Dell laptops here, Our sales manager for them is great, and they seem to last longer then the rest.
I am still trying to get one of the VPs to buy an alienware laptop....
Only Problem With IBM is that they do not make wide screen laptops.
-
Dell recently got a boat load of complaints from it's U.S. customers about calling support and getting a tech from India. Dell opened a support center in North America to deal with that. Guess it didn't last for long................

Seems like every time I call tech support, no matter what product, I get someone on the line who doesnt speak english as thier first language. There is one particular individual at Earthlink tech support that I ALWAYS get. His accent is so strong I cant understand him and always have to request that he transfer me to someone that speaks english as a first language.

Just for chuckles I looked this up.

yup,,just like he said jb88..never tell them you did somthing to it..best way to deal with tech support is tell them..it just stopped working..i have no idea why!! got to play stupid..hehe because i dont think the waranty covers dropped or broke lap tops that are 2 years old..i have a dell desk top,,only had 1 trouble with it in the 4 years i owned it..only one time i had a virus crash my machine<~~which is not coverd in my waranty...but i called them and played stupid and said my computer stopped working..wont boot up for some reason..and they helped me do a destructive recovery got it back up and runing fine:) but i had to lie to them to get past the waranty..lol
alot of laptops are weak..and dont think macs are any better..my aunt had a mac and we were at her house and she was packing for a trip..and it was sitting on the couch in its protective cass..well i watched it fall not even a foot to the floor on a padded carpet..didnt even make a thud..well we took it out and turned it on and it wouldnt work..she had to have it fixed..lol it was only a year old..so i dont think it matters on company..you just have to be carefull with those things somtimes..specialy if its your own:)

My favourite two laptops first was Sony R505 I had a few years back, awesome little beast. Second is my current, an Asus W1...

Asus also manufacture for Sony, HP, and Apple, so I figure you get the best of all worlds ;)

Love my Sony Vaio. Have had it for 2 yrs. It is a good solid system and puts up with a boat load of abuse. It has been knocked off wings, sat on, had beer spilton it/ in it, gotten wet, and been hit with a flying rivet set and it still keeps on trucking. The only complaint I have is the batteries are starting to suck pole for longevity.
-
ASUS look really nice.
i was also considering getting a pc tablet down the way sometime, but i am not sure if it would hinder or enhance. jury still out on that one.
the beauty of it all is this.
i find myself typing this while looking at these horrible cracks across my screen and a true distain for plug and play's or any unit that attaches and holds me down...even a monitor is too heavy and it suddenly occurs to me where i am.
i cant put her down or stop the work that i am doing because it's too important to me and i dont want to quit.
a part of me is in this broken system that i just have to access. just a work around it until i can afford not to again.
but i am not paying another 500 for a monitor. hell no.
ill buy another unit.
but this time, im shopping for perfection, precision and beauty. strong, dependable and sleek.
fast as hell. sweet as peaches.
i'll pay what it takes.
loyal.
**** dell.
dell sucks.

I have a Toshiba that seems to be fairly durable and works well. Stay the **** away from compaq!!!

88, you do realize that Dell uses local contractors for their warranty repairs, right?
This means the guy gets paid when he fixes your unit and you sign off as satisfied.
Call Dell, rather than use chat. Describe symptoms that reflect a failing screen. If you're still in warranty, they'll dispatch a repair.
The contractor that responds has no incentive to balk when he gets there with the new screen and sees yours is cracked. He has every incentive to just replace it, scrap the old part, and collect his fee.
I realize this isn't a model for honest behavior, but I wouldn't suggest it if it didn't sound as if you deserve the repair and the reps you've approached aren't doing what's right.
culero (administrated a lot of warranty in his day, its all about how you write it up)
