well, the family pooter is one sick puppy.
Looking at reinstalling XP.
Its an emachine and has what they call a Restore CD.
Do I reformat?
Its a pretty buggy machine and full of spyware. Damn kids.
Never had to do this with XP-home before. Am I in for a headache?
Any advice welcome.
cheers,
RTR

most "restore" CDs basically you put them in, and choose a full restore... they do the rest (i know the compaq restore CD did re-format the hard drive)
it should make your PC clean as a whistel, but set up exactly like when you bought it.
you will need to install any programs you have, do ALL windows, and virus updates, DX updates, and driver updates you have done, all of it.

go drop $50 on another hard drive and slave the original drive (D) so you can pull your data off it once you install ur OS, XP, onto the new drive (C)

he'd have to buy XP too then, because the "recovery" disk won';t work without the original hard drive in place.
if he had a legit copy of XP instead of the recovery disk, that would work
also, if he is loaded with spyware, and viruses, and were to put a secong hard drive in for a bit to back up data before the format, the new drive would likely get infected too. negating the purpose of wiping the slate clean so to say

The deed is in process now.
everything seems to be working. Updating windows now.
Gonna take a while to re-install all the rest.
Eagler, it just ain't worth $50 to me. thanks for the info though.
