This is the M36 Jackson. Armed with the high velocity 90mm gun (same as mounted in the M26 Pershing), it was capable of defeating just about anything it might encounter. They were very successful, with only the M18 Hellcat being the only Allied tank destroyer having a better kill to loss ratio.

What differentiates a tank from a tank destroyer? It does look similar to a common tank to my uneducated eye.

US tank destroyers were tanks with very little or no armour at all at the top, sides and rear of the turret.

German tank destroyers had no turret.

Tank Destroyers typically are used from concealment. Their primary tactic is ambush. They are not intended to engage tanks in the open. American TDs were armed with the 3" gun (adapted from an anti-aircraft gun) as installed in the M10, high velocity 76mm gun as armed the M18 and the 90mm gun (also developed from an anti-aircraft gun) mounted in the M36. German TDs used the 75mm StuK and the Pak 39 L/48. There was a small number armed with the L/70 gun as well. The Jagdpanther was armed with an 88mm gun. I guess that the ultimate TD was the Jagdtiger Ausf B, armed with a 128mm gun (IIRC).

Ironically, most experts point to the M18 as the best TD design of the war. It was capable of 65 mph on roads, 55 mph cross-country. Its speed, combined with a very lethal gun (shooting HVAP ammo) made the M18 the premier shoot and scoot TD. Very few were lost, but they took a heavy toll of German armor.

All US Army TDs had open top turrets, making their crews vulnerable to air burst artillery. Near the end of the war, the M36B was built with an armored turret roof.

the henschel turreted version of the King Tiger is not as cool looking as the Porsche version, but it is definitely more utilitarian and less of a shot trap.
