Title: New Icon System
Post by: Kev367th on May 22, 2005, 04:25:02 AM
Love it.
Nothing like diving on a La7 with a 'Tiffy', he assumes he can outrun, only to find it's a Tempest. LOLOLOL

Habit probably. :)

Wondered why I've been seeing so many Tempests about recently. That "temp" banner must have really made you everyone's target no1 before.

Thats funny, because I have not met a Tempest yet that did not try to run, only to find out that he is not as fast as he thought :lol

plane name icons are gamey

like to meet the pilot that can tell a 109f from a 109g from a 109g2, g6, g10 when flying by them in the heat of combat

easy mode for the kiddies

Before the skins it was easy to differentiate just by knowing the skin of each model.
The new icon system is not completly new.

Plus the 109 allways had an unfair advantage in this area.
Do you thing you can differentiate a hurry and a typhoon at 5K ?

heck without an icon i can;t tell a spit from a hurri at 100 yards.

i just don't see any differences in their shape, guess im dumb or something. they look identical, and ugly lol

they ALWAYS are alive 100 years in front of me. last night i missed 2 passes on a spit, i got to icon range 0 and was holding down the trigger for over a full second.

i can not shoot for ****, and have given up all hope of ever getting even the slightest bit better.

i am actually getting worse every week in the past 4 months. the mroe time goes by, the more i try to "aim" the worse i get

i think i'm down to under 2% hit % if i'm lucky.

In my room (Franks Coop Missions) we always fly without icons.
It's really hard to see if your target is friend or foe.

You have to 1) zoom in very far or 2) be behind it within 500 yards.

It does make you a little more cautionate with the shooting :) ('hold your fire! It's me!')

The aiming doesn't get any harder from it though

That wouldn't make sense. Right now, I wonder why one is able to ID enemy icons and not friendlies?

The ID range for enemy icons seems pretty good to me, but we should also be able to ID friendlies......just makes sense.

"like to meet the pilot that can tell a 109f from a 109g from a 109g2, g6, g10 when flying by them in the heat of combat "

I'd like you to show ME the battle where 109F's were flying right alongside 109G-10's.

JB73,maybe you should spend some time in the TA practicing your gunnery skills,i myself an a very useful target in there, and don,t mind letting everyone get thier practice in.

If everyone was running on equal systems and we had a setup which didnt expose us to 109-Es flying next to 109-G10s we could do away with the icon system.

Currently we cant fly w/o icons because system performance would give too much of an  advantage. On a high end system its much easier to see what a plane is.

Another problem which aint just system related but is bigger on worse systems is the fact that depth perception is bad in games. Its very hard to tell if something is 100 or 500 meters away. It is always much easier to judge distance IRL then IG, simply because the screen is two dimentional.

So while Icons are gamey there aint much one can do about it in a multi player (read multi platform) environment.
Tex.

Alt+I cycles through the different icon modes, one of which is 'plane type only' (or something) that shows the plane types of both the green and red icons.  Is that what you mean?

Would like to see this option for events.  Well... we have that option now, but I would like to see icon range only for enemy at 1.0 or less.

Why not just have the range, and not the plane type?

not only a multi-platform, but multi war environment. in real life americans in eurpoe in WWII did not have to learn to ID Jap planes, or american navy planes for that matter.

it is not possibly to be able to have everyone identify every plane from WWII from a few pixels on a computer moniter. it is also not fun to force them to try to.
