Title: Wireless set up
Post by: FBScud on May 22, 2005, 05:23:38 PM
My daughter is home from school and wants to hit the net while I'm playing.  I'm thinking of a set up where my pc is hardwired through the router to the cable modem and my daughter has wireless access through the router.  Two questions:

1.  Will simultnaneous access kill the game through reduced bandwidth or other problems with simultaneous access?

2.  What is a good wireless router set up?  I've heard good things about linksys, not so good about netgear.  It looks like the "g" version is the way to go.  I've also read about a D-Link 4300 setup that's supposed to be pricey but good.

Thanks for the help!

I have 3 systems + and Xbox all run through the router here and I havent noticed any dropoff or any detrimental effects on gameplay due to averything being online at once.
So I would have to say no based on my personal experiance

As for the wireless setup I only run everything hardwired (personally dont trust wireless setups) And that is a linksys.
Again from personal experiance I havent had anything Linksys that has given me a problem
I know Linksys has a combo router out. So based on my customer satisfaction. if I were to go wireless, I'd go Linksys

Well I had a dsl hook up using a D-Link router and 3 people were using it.

Only time anyone had any trouble was when someone wanted to download any large files, like muzak files!

Had to go tell her knock it off and do the big file downloads during offtime.

She musta had over 100 files lined up for download.

She erased em all 2 weeks later when all those download law suite threats started.

Anyways, I don't trust wireless unless you cover your backside with security!  Plenty of security.  The CAN and WILL hack into an unsecured system from curbside.

I use wired stuff.  Ya it's kinda old fashioned but a little more secure then wireless.

Thats exacly how I'm set up....my box is hardwired to a broadband router (D-Link) and I have 3 pc's and a notebook that are on network as wireless. No issues with thruput at all. Truthfully it doesnt matter what you use, I have linksys netgear and Dlink routers and cards from all the above and have used them all. You can also intermingle brands of cards if needed. I've got an SMC and a netgrear card and they work fine with the D-Link.

What is important your antenna. I've got a single story 3600+ sqft house so I use directional ant otherwise signal degrades to fast. Also make sure you either dont network your boxes or you set up virus/firewall's right. You can get hosed if other box is networked and catchs wrong thing. Also if you live in a congested area you might want to consider encrypting. I can pick up 2 other wireless uplinks on my notebook:)
